Cold Specks "Winter Solstice" It would make more sense for me to wait and do a post for this song two months from now when the actual winter solstice is, but being timely and relevant to certain situations has never been my cup-o-tea. Plus if the crazy guy on the corner of the street is to be believed the world will be ending right around then anyway. "Winter Solstice" is from Cold Specks ( Al Spx ) 2012 album I Predict a Graceful Expulsion [...]
Cold Specks , might be their year to explode. Being featured on BBC’s Later… With Jools Holland and some loving from the critics. I was lucky enough to see them open up for St.Vincent back on December 16, 2011 . Cold Specks is the stage name of Canadian singer-songwriter now based in London, UK Al Spx. Apparently it is not her real name but it is intriguing and elusive. I Predict A Expulsion, the debut album will drop on May 22, 2012 on Arts & Crafts in North [...]
A laminated copy of the Marian antiphon Regina Coeli lies meditatively, at ease, in the reverse of one of many congregated chairs beside an abandoned, crumpled can of Carlsberg. Its first line reads: 'Joy to Thee, O Queen of Heaven. Alleluia!' and while comparing Al Spx, the core of Cold Specks to the Blessed Virgin Mary may be outlandish, or blasphemous, or what have you, her voice, in the sombre setting of St. Pancras Old Church, resonates quite divinely. The convened mill about the candlelit chamber, plastic cups brimming with crimson liquid, and with an extensive wait before [...]
When Al Spx, aka Cold Specks ( Facebook / MySpace ), released her hauntingly beautiful debut single, Holland , I was in love within the first few bars. And seeing here live a few days later only added to my excitement of what she may release next. She has a notable but very roughly recorded back catalogue when recording under the names Basket of Figs and The Hotel Ghost , but a little more emphasis on production and drawing out her soulful voice was certainly needed, and that is what we are getting with her latest [...]
Here's some of what little we know about Cold Specks : It is the alias of Al Spx, a 23-year-old native of Canada now living in London. Previous DBAs include Basket of Figs and Hotel Ghost She was "discovered by Timber Timbre and is currently working on her Cold Specks debut under the guidance of producer Rob Ellis (PJ Harvey, Anna Calvi) She refers to her music as "doom soul," but to me it sounds like a folky Betteye Lavette. Holland [...]
I've barely got any info on Canada's Cold Specks other than she is Al Spx of Etobicoke, Ontario and writes some of the most bleak but beautiful and disarming songs I've heard in a long time. The similarities with Johnny Cash are obvious, as she writes what she terms as "doom soul", but its the simplicity that draws you in leaving her smokey dulcet tones the hang in the air. She was discovered by Taylor from Timbre Timbre at a backyard show in Canada and is currently recording with Rob Ellis, who is also doing some [...]

Cold Specks, the project of singer/guitarist Al Spx, takes its name from Jame Joyce's writing, Born all in the dark wormy earth, cold specks of fire, evil, lights shining in the darkness. Spx's weighty name influence translates to Cold Specks' material, a sound that's both aged and deeply moving. Watch Cold Specks' video [...]

Cold Specks is the project of singer/guitarist Al Spx, who specializes in self-proclaimed "doom soul", drawing upon elements of folk and gospel with vocals that will stop you in your tracks and hook you instantaneously. Cold Specks is set to embark on a headlining North American tour in November. Watch her video for [...]

Holland
Al Spx might be one of the better secrets Canada has ever kept from itself. The 23-year-old Etobicoke native has been busy making a name for her Cold Specks project over in the U.K., charming the likes of Jools Holland and The Guardian with an old, soulful spirit that betrays her age. After a successful few months, she's now ready to take the her songs back home, teaming up with Toronto indie-titan Arts & Crafts to put out her Holland 73 single early next month. I'm by no means well-versed in the world of soul music, [...]
