Neko Case has released the first single, “Man,” from her upcoming album, whose title steals a page out of the Fiona Apple playbook: The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You . As Tyler says , "this is Neko Case at her best: loud, funny, vulgar, and aggressive." The album is out September 3, 2013 and can be pre-ordered now. Can't wait. Every Neko Case album is like unwrapping a Christmas present . Life is just better listening to Neko Case.

Nashville based Blank Range is an emerging quintet that play cozy, 70's influenced roots rock made for road trips and summer nights. The band recently released their debut Phase II EP last month on cassette and their warm, dusty recordings have caught the ears of critics and fans alike. The EP has a hazy filter, which gives the slick riffs, twangy flourishes, swirling organs, and whiskey-burned vocals added charm. There are two lead singers, Jon Childers (wrote lyrics and sang [...]

Apologies to any Sarah Blasko fans out there, but acoustic guitar-slinging songstresses have never really been my thing. You know, the ones who write weepy ballads about their 'man' or, possibly worse, peppy empowerment jigs about moving on. The same thing goes for the boys, I guess. Hopefully one day John Butler's dreadlocks will strangle (or at least gag) him. For some reason, these lightweight, folksy ballads irk me more when they come from women. That probably makes me sound like some sort of iron-trousered, neo-Thatcherite anti-feminist, but hear me out. In an industry that's still mostly male-dominated, when [...]
I don't hunt Bandcamp as frequently as I used to, but occasionally on a slow weekend, I find myself wanting to seek out music rather than sorting through submission emails. Last weekend was one of those slow weekends that I searched Bandcamp. One of the finds was the debut EP of Morninghorse. Though they hail from Australia, their music could easily be classified as Americana. The first track that plays when you load on Bandcamp is Western Star and by the time the organ started I decided that I was going to listen to the EP [...]

The significance of Northern Rock in the UK is likely not to have got much news coverage in the US, after all they had their own financial problems to deal with, so this is not a album attacking the UK financial fuck-ups (though there is the odd profanity in the songs). If you're not familiar with the music of Eastbound Jesus via their excellent debut release Holy Smokes then theirs is a blend of alt-country, americana, bluegrass and country with a New York roots rock twist. [...]

One of top submissions for this years CXCW festival came from Uncle Leon & The Alibis who's raucous Beer Train (not seen it, shame on you, click here , who's that girl?), how to follow that, well on their current album Wild Way the band go old-school recording with vintage analogue kit direct to 23 tape and the release features a number of 'classic' sounds on it's roller-coaster ten-track ride. There's a distinct 902s alt-country feel to the album opener Hold On , then there's Cheatin' Kind which harks back [...]
If you like alt-country and have a sense of humour then try this album for size. It's a complete blast! By Martyn Coppack
© Kiera Kalleberg Larry And His Flask are the latest American band to head out on tour with Frank Turner. Having been able to introduce fans to fantastic bands from across the pond before, I'm pretty confident that the UK and Europe will see a whole lot more of the alt-country band in the future. The same can be said for, drummer and vocalist, Jamin Marshall. We chatted about what this tour might mean for L&HF ahead of the first night of the 'Tape Deck Heart' tour in Manchester and discussed how Europe reacts [...]

Faced with the yuppie invasion in their hometown, London's Fat White Family strive to wreak more havoc and deliver something real to their surroundings. Their highly anticipated debut album Champagne Holocaust , released April 1st on Trashmouth Records , does just that as the gap-toothed hoodlums shock and scintillate over eleven psych-trashed gems. Compared to "early Liars, smacky Butthole Surfers, and The Cramps" and called a "debauched, modern day Velvet Underground," Fat White Family delves out tunes perfect for society's discards to parade around [...]
