As someone who considers themselves something of a collector when it comes to music, there always seems to be an album or two that I can't seem to track down both in good condition and for a price I'm willing to pay. <!-- --> read more
This is the thirty-sixth in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. <!-- --> read more
Sad news today from the world of rock and roll... The White Stripes, Jack and Meg White, have chosen to hang it up announcing that they're going to be leaving the legacy of the band as is, will not be recording or touring anymore and officially are calling it quits. <!-- --> read more
It's been a good 5 years since we had new music from the band that brought the sounds of 60s garage rock back to the mainstream, but they're coming back with new music this spring. That's right, the Strokes have recently announced that their new album, tentatively titled "Angels", is supposed to be released March 21 2011. <!-- --> read more
Who would have thought when I glanced through the music headlines this morning that I would see a brief blurb about Jane's Addiction supposedly returning to the studio... all of them, the original line up. Advertisement: <!-- -->
Never one to pass up a good concert if I have any choice in the matter, I have once again been attending musical events with vigor. This time it was a band that I've seen a few times before and they've always put on a good, fun, high energy show: Better Than Ezra. Advertisement: <!-- -->
During the time the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll was being redesigned and reborn, there was a lot of music news that I didn't get to discuss. One of the most exciting (at least for a big Pumpkins fan like me) was the announcement that the Smashing Pumpkins would be releasing their next album, a 44 song epic called Teargarden By Kaleidoscope would be released a song at a time online. It was well over two months ago that I was lucky enough to see this band live. I meant to write a review almost immediately, but between site overhauls, other issues and a series of delays, this is the first time I'm actually getting around to doing so properly. Consider it a testament to how much I enjoyed this show that I'm still writing a review so much later. Advertisement: <!-- -->
A few months prior... before the site overhaul, many unique circumstances and many many more delays, I went to a concert. That by itself is not all that uncommon as I go to a number of concerts every year and will certainly go to more every year in the future. Advertisement: <!-- -->
Exciting rock news in the past few days/weeks/months. What is easily one of the most exciting super groups of all time, Them Crooked Vultures, announced that their debut album will be officially released in just a few days on November 16-17, 2009. I don't know about you all, but I've got my copy on pre-order and have been anxiously awaiting that very first listen. Advertisement: <!-- -->
So we are a few days post Lollapalooza 2009 now. Unfortunately financial difficulties (a fancy way of saying "lack of money") prevented me from going this year. I scrimped and saved, but unforeseen headaches arose and things fell through... a shame too because it sounds like it was a pretty sweet three days. I was looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of bands this year: The Silversun Pickups, Depeche Mode, Tool, Jane's Addiction, Lou Reed, etc etc and apparently a few of those bands rocked pretty hard. The Jane's Addiction set even included a [...]

This is the thirtieth in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. Today I put forward what is the 30th Rock and Roll feature I've done in the past 2-1/2+ years. There's been a lot of variety, albums new and old, during that stretch and each one remains a favorite of mine for some reason or another to this day. [...]

Well I just couldn't keep away... my concert addiction continues... not that I'm really complaining. This time I caught a band I've seen a total of four times now, and will probably make an effort to catch every time they come around because they're a favorite of mine, and they always put on a great show: Incubus. Describing the music of this band is always something of a challenge for me. There are elements of metal, alternative, psychedelia plus the obvious urban influences, but they also exhibit punk rock energy, a sense of space that is [...]

Last month was a month that was far too busy, stressful and hectic here at the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll. Luckily it closed out appropriately enough, with me attending a great concert by a band I've been wanting to see live since... well since I was old enough to know what their music was all about: Nine Inch Nails. The collected works of Trent Reznor and company have long been in heavy listening rotation for me. I remember hearing "The Perfect Drug" debut on the radio and immediately being struck... "what was this high speed, [...]
This is the twenty-eighth in a series of Rock & Roll features I'm writing for this site. I'm a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. For this month's featured album I actually had a hard time picking... the hardest time I've had since I started writing these monthly features. I don't like to force my writing so I delayed the feature a little longer than I would have liked, but eventually was struck by the perfect choice. [...]
I'm sad to once again have to report the death of a great musician. Jay Bennett, age 45 was found dead just this past Sunday in his home in Urbana IL. A member of Titanic Love Affair and Wilco, as well as having an extensive solo career, Bennett's songwriting is unique, powerful and complex...the music community is surely a less creative place without him. Although I've heard a few tracks off of his solo albums and a few tracks from Titanic Love Affair, it is Bennett's work with Wilco that I am most familiar with. [...]
I've been sort of resisting discussing the Dead Weather since I first heard about them... why? Well because of my own bias really. I mean it's a new "supergroup" where you have on drums Jack White from the White Stripes/Racontuers... I'm big fans of both... combined Jack Lawrence, bassist from the Raconteurs/Greenhornes, guitarist Dead Fertita from Queens of the Stone Age... another favorite band of mine... and Alison Mosshart of the Kills, a band I wrote about for the Soul of Rock 'n' Roll, way back in the day. Combine all those sounds and all that talent [...]
