Seattle born singer-songwriter Amy Blaschke who's been writing and performing from the age of 16 is now older and wiser and residing in LA, she's just released her latest solo effort Desert Varnish ( Wiki ) a collection of self-penned chilled Americana tracks - let her massage your weary ears with her dreamy lilt and desert bleached melodies. http://www.amyblaschke.com/ iTunes
Nancy & Lee meet Hope & Ennio What if, after cutting his musical teeth in Phoenix, Lee Hazlewood had turned East to Nashville, rather than West to Los Angeles? And what if he'd met Nancy Sinatra in MusicCity rather than the City of Angels? The answer might sound like a twist on the Western-tinged landscapes of " Summer Wine " and " Some Velvet Morning ," and it might have sounded something like the opening track of this Nashville band's debut. Vocalist Jessica Maros' sings a bit more ethereally than Nancy, but with the [...]

It is of course only my humble opinion but if Americana had to crown a genre King and Queen then surely it would be Brett & Rennie Sparks, my first encounter with their regal music was on the 1998 Uncut compilation CD Sounds of the New West - The Best of Alternative Country - they left an indelible musical imprint with their track Weightless Again along with a number of other contributors to that CD including Hazeldine, Calexico and the late great Vic Chesnutt, The Handsome Family have built a formidable [...]

We're loving what we're hearing from the Boston based quartet Tallahassee. The band takes it’s name from a Native American word meaning, “old town" and they write introspective songs that both wash over you with beautiful ambience and experimental touches that push the Americana envelope. Latest single, I'll Be Damned , is a haunting ode to backsliding. With its adventurous arrangement, featuring tribal rhythms, delicate picking and keening guitar solos, the track reminds us that no matter what we struggle with, setbacks are a part of the healing process. Have a listen, along with [...]

The ghost of this long winter is still present, but it's fading. Quite right for the Walpurgis-Night on April, 30th. So here is two hours program of american primitivsm, old school, new school, no school steelstring guitar picking and sliding and clanging from all over the world. Bloody fingers ensured! The Kindling is a London based quartet that make sad, strange and beautiful music. Drawing influence from the guerrilla recording spirit of Sparklehorse, Mount Eerie, and Tom Waits, The Kindling were formed to breathe supernatural life into the dark acoustic songs of front man Guy Weir . Their latest single Hunting Stars is from their forthcoming Half Light EP and features the soft and warm alt-folk glow they are most known for. The rolling lull of a lightly plucked acoustic guitar leads Weir's spectral gasp as [...]

Bit late getting to this, feeling lazy so I'll let April from the wonderful Now This Sound Is Brave and Pete David from the band tell you all about it. A CONVERSATION WITH PETE DAVID OF THE PAYROLL UNION
Broken minor keys, cracked vocal harmonies, fireside percussion, and tv static dreams. The Kindling make sad, strange and beautiful music. Drawing influence from the uncompromising recording spirit of Sparklehorse, Mount Eerie, and Tom Waits, The Kindling were formed to breathe supernatural life into the songs of singer Guy Weir. After their debut EP From Out Of The Wreckage , the band's second EP Half Light is a collection filled with pale ghosts and half-remembered dreams. From the widescreen Morricone-esque introduction The Longwave to the twisting minor key shuffle [...]

Wooden Wand | Hoxton Underbelly, London | 26 April 2013 At last a chance to see MM's most blogged about artist, the wonderful Wooden Wand , whose excellent latest releases Blood Oaths Of The New Blues and The Briarwood Virgins are just the most recent examples from his extensive catalogue of idiosyncratic Americana mixing stripped back folk, alt-country, psychedelia and sprawling indie rock. The venue was (as a late switch from the scheduled Water Rats) the Underbelly in London's oh-so-trendy Hoxton Square, spilling over with look-at-mes [...]

It's been a while since we've succumbed to the anxieties of our overwhelming in-box, but succumb we have. So, here is a too short and not sweet enough collection of new tunes of varying shapes and sizes that deserve some attention from you. Consider it the digital equivalent of crate digging... Paperhaus released its alt-country styled self-titled EP in 2011, and will release its second effort, an EP entitled Lo Hi Lo on May 28th and it reflects the more pop side of Paperhaus' psychedelic music. Grab yourself Helicopter [...]

Music that's like a wave of solar rays rolling over you it's so easy to kick back and let the melodies do their thing, there's something distinctly West Coast about the album from the LA singer-songwriter Susan James on her new album Driving Toward the Sun though the California sunshine is carefully tempered by the beautiful clouded melancholy of the albums main themes of love twisted, torn and lost, when accompanied by the sound that only a weeping pedal steel can convey the under-lying sadness is beautifully accentuated. It's the kind of album that puts me in [...]

When we hear the words 'Heart Of Gold' we think of Neil Young and that makes us happy. So when one of our favourite new bands Winterhours contacted us about their new single which, coincidentally is also called Heart Of Gold we had a feeling it was going to be something special. We weren't disappointed. Part Crosby, Stills and Nash, part Fleet Foxes, there is a vibe about this record that is both warming and luxurious. Released through the independent label Saint November on Monday (29th April) the single [...]

Emma Hill clocks up a hat-trick of appearances on Beat Surrender with her fourth album The Black and Wretched Blue, the Alaskan singer-songwriter continues to impress with her developing brand of Americana, it's no surprise given the album's title that the themes and mood are a little darker and subdued on this outing but the quality of the writing and compositions continue to impress this listener and the collaboration with musical partner Bryan Daste (pedal steel, banjo, guitar, vocals) works wonderfully well, you can follow them on the road via their NoD blog . Emma [...]

The brilliant debut album The Mammoth Sessions by Georgia's Horse was a big hit round these parts. Mrs M in particular loved the mysterious, haunting vocals of Texan songwriter Teresa Maidonado set over a backdrop of swirling, dusty Americana and old-time folk. It was gorgeous, mesmerising and unsettling in equal measure and as fine a debut record as you were likely to hear. Her new album Weather Codes will emerge blinking into the light of day on the 25th June courtesy of the mighty fine Fire Records . Consisting of fourteen [...]
