The Melvins will be kicking off their "Sugar Daddy Splits" series soon via Amphetamine Reptile , which will be made up of thirteen 123 singles, all 180 gram on splatter vinyl, and feature a Melvins tune on the A-side, and a track from a band "they love from past, present, and future" on the B-side. God Bullies at AM-REP 25th Anniversary ( more by Taylor Keahey ) " The Color of Noise " will be a story of music and art, and how the keen musical tastes, and ultra graphic design sense of one independent record label owner brought to the world the sights and sounds that helped to create and influence future musical genres while humbly kicking the crap out of the rock underground! Amphetamine Reptile Records while in full operation from the mid 1980's to the late 1990's turned out an incredible roster of music acts with [...]

Before there were blogs there were these things called magazines, and the only metal magazine we still get excited about reading every month is Decibel. Here's managing editor Andrew Bonazelli. While the free world breathlessly awaits the results of Decibel editor-in-chief Albert Mudrian's NLCS bet with Exhumed frontman Matt Harvey — and even down 3-1, [...]

Started in 1986 by Minneapolitan Tom Hazelmyer while he was stationed as a Marine in Washington State to release the music he had recorded with his band, Halo of Flies, Amphetamine Reptile (abbreviated as AmRep) went on to develop an impressive roster of bands from the Twin Cities and elsewhere playing caustic versions of punk taken to nth degree. Releasing a series of 7-inches under the banner of "Dope-Guns-N-Fucking in the Streets," the label established its own hardboiled aesthetic which seemed to align with the noisy sounds it was peddling. Those sounds seemed unlikely to garner mainstream attention, [...]
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Mod Showdown. In the right corner we have the reigning champions, Mudhoney, managed by thee great Billy Childish. In the left corner we have the challengers, Halo Of Flies, managed by John's Children. Most fight enthusiasts have predicted a knock-out win for Mudhoney in the first round. And the champs come out swinging with a cover of The Milkshakes' "She's Just Fifteen." It's going to be tough to beat a song with lyrics like, "I'm so lazy don't get out of bed 'til twelve o'clock, Got no time for workin', Never [...]

Today's the day. The sheep awaken at 4 in the morning so that they can invade shopping malls across the nation to fulfill their cheap, consumeristic desires. Me? I thought it was only fitting to wake up at 7:09 a.m. on this Black Friday so that I could bring you the new weekly feature here at The Days of Lore called ... "Black Friday." However, this new Friday tradition should not be confused with shopping, or historical disasters. TDoL's Black Friday will examine the unholy underworld of metal. Why? Because I grew [...]
In the early 90s, Minneapolis, MN based Hammerhead recorded a string of EPs and albums for an independent label Amphetamine Reptile. Unfortunately, after loosing their guitarist Paul Sanders, they were unable to find a proper replacement for him and after releasing few albums with various session musicians, they decided to go on as a duo [...]

"If Hammerhead's debut was to alternative rock what Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer was to independent film -- a harrowing glimpse into the cold, hard heart of darkness -- Into the Vortex is more like Quentin Tarantino's equally violent, but more sophisticated Reservoir Dogs . On their sophomore release (not counting the live EP, Evil Twin ), the band applies a greater degree of finesse to their bloodthirsty din. Although the record pummels as hard as their 1993 debut, Ethereal Killer , vocals have become a bigger part of the equation and [...]
