There are two Andrew Birds in constant competition with one another: a fabricator of intricate torch songs (the aching "Armchairs") and a colorful ringleader of giddy pop (the ebullient "Fitz and the Dizzyspells"). At his best, though, Bird tangles these competing aesthetics into an admirably knotty composition that feels paradoxically loose and tight ("Fake Palindromes," "Simple X," "Plasticities"). As the lead single of his forthcoming Break It Yourself , " Eyeoneye " is as neat of a summary of Bird's artistic concerns as anything you could find in his back catalog. Even at his most straightforward—those choruses practically bash away—the [...]

[The New Classics is a reoccurring segment in which we examine our favorite indie releases that are bound to replace our parent's "classic rock" stash hidden in the attic or the basement. These aren't reviews, these are unedited testimonies and opinions about why we love what we love. Ah, Tartan Shortbread, that most wonderful of sardonic Scottish put-downs. For those unfamiliar with the term, this is the offhand dismissal used to describe the sort of mawkish, clichéd tourist tat which masquerades as Scottish heritage and culture for those with woefully little imagination. Alternatively, I suppose you could say that Tartan Shortbread is a blanket term for Scottish heritage as a sort of motorway service station take on national identity. Anyhow, given I work very much at the coalface of the DIY music world in Scotland, I find that I have been oddly unsupportive of [...]

This edition compiles January and the majority of December. Despite including material featured at the tail end of 2011, every track on here apart from "Stuck Together" and "(I'm In) A Chorus Line" is from a 2012 release. So here's our first peek at music in the new year, even if it's just the tip

Last Saturday, folk violinist and champion whistler Andrew Bird performed a live webcast concert from London. The performance was the first of a monthly series taking place in the installation space A Room for London, a riverboat perched on the roof of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Once a month, a musician will enter the small Roi des Belges , which will operate as a one-bedroom hotel during much of 2012, for two days-the first day to familiarize themselves in preparation for the next day's webcast. Having apparently stayed there Friday night, Bird kicked off the Sounds From a [...]

In case you weren't already jealous of Andrew Bird for his awesome violin skills, pop sensibilities or good looks, a short video has dropped of him prepping new album Break It Yourself (out via Mom + Pop on March 6) on his amazing farm in Illinois. The clip also features a little snippet of an [...]

I'll probably be experimenting with the formatting of the Single Servings posts for the next few weeks to find something I like. However, instead of featuring one new track per post, I'm planning on featuring a collection of new singles in each Single Serving post. I really really feel compelled to try to keep tings neat and orderly, so I may try to lump all the Soundcloud-hosted tracks into one Single Serving post, all of the Bandcamp tracks into the following Single Serving post, and then the free downloadable tracks into another. Anyways, if you have any feedback [...]

Cameron Wittig In the early days of QBiM, it seemed strange if a month went by where I didn't write something about Andrew Bird , let alone years between posts. A brief recap is in order, then? Bird's 2007 album Armchair Apocrypha was a shoo-in for end of year honours 'round these parts after its March release that year, and was probably the most played album of '07 for me. 20092s Noble Beast was good, but didn't have the pull of its predecessor. Since then, [...]
TweetWe're all jumping for joy over here...What a fun reminder that Andrew's new album, Break it Yourself, is around the corner. Eyeoneye by Andrew Bird

Eyeoneye is the new song released from Andrew Bird 's upcoming album Break It Yourself , due out on March 6. Bird is a talented multi-instrumentalist whose sound can best be described as rustic and folksy. If that's your cup of tea, take a listen to the song below:
Andrew Bird is back! Well, to be honest, he never really went very far. The Chicago native has a new album Break It Yourself due out March 6, and "Eyeoneye" is the first single from that record. Noticeably absent from the mix on this track are the violins that have populated much of Bird's more [...]

Looking over the list of albums slated for release in the new few months, it's hard not to get overly giddy - 2012 is going to be a great year for music. Several bands that made names for themselves with wildly inventive and successful debuts are putting forth their sophomore efforts this year. The all-important follow-up album can be tricky, though, especially when an artist has made such a unique statement with their debut - I'm definitely eager to hear how these musicians have adapted their sound.
