The Most Serene Republic serve as a reminder to embrace eccentricity wherever you may find it. The Milton, Ontario septet wash out jubilant layers of symphonic pop to capture the delicate grief in growing up. With their third full length release ...And the Ever Expanding Universe, released on Arts&Crafts early last year, the band reveals the strange serenity of an archaic soundscape. Their visit to the Canadian East Coast late last year started with a sound check occasionally punctuated by the communal donair passed around onstage and the inspired vocal ballads chanted while warping levels. In a starlit [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Canada's The Most Serene Republic have spent the majority of their career flying just below the radar of most indie music fans, but at their newest album, And the Ever Expanding Univers e, demonstrates, this young group has continued to mature in more ways than mere age, honing their craft of compiling mini-suites of pop. Such a progression alone warrant accolades, but the fact that the band has continued to form into a tightly knit group with songs to [...]

The Most Serene Republic -"Catharsis Boo" off their latest ...And the Ever Expanding Universe , "catharsis boo" amiably mixes counter-melodies, harmonies and syncopated layers of traditionalesque instrumentation in less-traditional ways. and while sooo many others don't, these canucks actually justify all 7 pieces of their band.. they'd make a mean hockey team my friends getitgetitgetget rating: 7.5
Whether or not you're ready for the somewhat ramshackle chaos the emerges from time to time from Canada's progressive pop/indie rockers The Most Serene Republic will more than likely determine your reaction to the band's ambitious new July 14 album ...And The Ever Expanding Universe (Arts and Crafts) . We happen to think that the loose and limber songs more than make up for any random dissonance. Singer Adrian Jewett 's strained warble and and pianist Ryan Lenssen's imaginative arrangements take on charmed existences unto their own on songs such as the splayed rhythms and [...]

Frankly, I'm surprised I haven't discussed The Most Serene Republic on KR yet (except for this brief mention . Can i even call that brief?), and I apologize. While the seven-piece Milton, Ontario crew does occasionally swing for the fences and miss, when they're on, they're on. One of the most downright enjoyable albums I have in my collection is The Most Serene Republic's Population , which is filled with atmospheric, pounding pop gems, and gorgeous back and forth guy-girl harmonies. It's a discordant masterpiece of an album, with pieces that shouldn't [...]

The Most Serene Republic was a pleasant surprise when I first saw them in 2005. Shortly after signing to Arts & Crafts, they joined an an all-star line-up on Toronto's Olympic Island, sharing the stage with Modest Mouse, Broken Social Scene, Metric and Do Make Say Think. The young band's exuberance and the catchiness of their cheekily titled first single 'Content was Always My Favourite Colour' managed to outshine a number of the better-known bands on the playbill. It was certainly a great first impression and Underwater Cinematographer was a solid first effort by an up-and-coming band. I [...]

Photography by THEEOS300400D Hailing from Milton , Ontario in good ol' Canada (you hear that Oliver ? Don't worry... it'll all be over soon) just outside of glorious Toronto (affectionately called T-Punta in Mexico), the good folks over in The Most Serene Republic have offered up their latest collection of symphonic / cinematic / classical often-prog pop / rock gems to my wanton ears with ...And The Ever Expanding Universe . Did you catch that, " [...]
