I think of these guys as the new electronic Pink Floyd. Before you start arguing, just listen. I'm not trying to say that they are gonna revolutionize music or any outlandish claim of the sort. But for me, Animal Collective has the same hypnotizing effect; the Merriweather Post Pavilion album especially. Merriweather Post Pavilion flows seemlessly from one song to the next. It has some great creative noises in it. As tracks blend and flow one to the next your mood and emotions are swept in and taken with. My Girls is definitely the #1 single from the album, but I [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Animal Collective, Yeasayer "Panda Bear - Last Night at the Jetty" What's so good? Panda Bear's nine-minute teaser is deep, heavy, and echoes with a tribal essence. Last Night at the Jetty , released on December 12, is powerful yet simple, electronic yet folk. Known in the human world as Noah Lennox, Animal Collective’s Panda Bear uses his experimental genius and mixing capabilities to produce [...]
You're gonna like this one, I guarantee it. Ok, I don't really guarantee it, but I can say you'll love it if you loved their astounding debut EP . As you'd expect from the song, the video follows suit with some trippy visuals, cold electronic synthetics, and a slightly creepy vibe with some hooded entity roaming the snow-covered New Zealand countryside (hey, I get creeped out by snow, gimme a break ok?), and ending with about a minute and a half of black screen before it switches to a white noise [...]
I'd say my ratio for PR companies sending me half-decent music is maybe one out of ten (sometimes two), and I don't get a whole lot of PR releases. That either says something about the state of music, or about PR, or about both, but those one or two times that they nail it and send me something good, holy fucking shit do they nail it. Thanks to my girl Jessi, New Zealand's Glass Vaults (Richard Larsen and Rowan Pierce) are now up there with my favourite musical discoveries of the year (because I've made a few medical and [...]
Musician/vocalist Avey Tare (David Porter on his birth certificate) of Animal Collective is releasing a solo album titled Down There on October 26th, 2010 through Animal Collective's Paw Tracks record label. Above this text is a music video for the song Lucky 1 animated/hand drawn by Abby Portner . Also, there are some cool press photos by skateboard photographer Atiba Jefferson at the [...]

This may be one of the most underrated songs on Merriweather Post Pavilion ; it's romantic and playful and the chorus is gorgeous, adding a nice piano line to the bossa nova-like rhythm and tropical sound effects. The video is appropriately shot in blue tones, and it appears its dancers, rhythmic gymnasts and bubble-blowers inhabit a mercurial planet where modesty of the body in encouraged. It'll make sense in a minute. Watch the video on the band's website. Animal Collective on MySpace Buy 2009's Merriweather Post Pavilion from

This post is a "QuickPick". QuickPicks are my attempt at getting all of the music that's sent to me that I like (or just music I like but have no words for because it's so awesome), out into the dubya dots. Any time I get sent music that I like I "star" it in Gmail and then go back and listen to it a day later. If it's still as good as it was a day before then it goes up on the site, but sometimes I get backlogged and can't get through writing up pieces for each [...]

This track is taken from the Animal Collective's movie score for ODDSAC . ODDSAC is an experimentl film featuring pyschedelic visuals. Describing the movie, [AC's Avey] Tare continued: "The whole thing cohesively doesn't have one narrative; it's more of a visual or psychedelic thing. There are parts that are almost completely abstract, and there are parts that are little bit more live-action." So yeah, it's an Animal Collective movie, not Gone With the Wind. So this isn't quite an "Introducing" piece since they've been around for a little while and featured on other sites, but not a whole lot. First things first though; Hot fucking damn this shit is tight. For some reason before listening to their music I kinda thought, based on the name, that they'd be some Metal band but they're far from it. Animal Collective samples (if brief), 8-bit Gameboy Dance-synths, Avalanches-like spoken parts, hooks and melodies that are contagious like the clap, whitey Rap-Hop, and beats that somehow manage to make their way from the back of your [...]

So the new Panda Bear single, Tomboy/Slow Motion , is already sold out . Bummer news for Noah Lennox vinyl-die-hards, but the rest of us can get our fix digitally via iTunes come July 20th -- and by fix, I mean snag a high-quality version of the single's a-side, "Tomboy" -- Until next week then, you and I are stuck with the almost trip-hop sounding b-side, "Slow Motion." You will dig it, so download below. P.S. In case your fingers have been far from the Animal Collective [...]
![[Listen] – Two Brand New Songs By Panda Bear – “Tomboy” and “Slow Motion”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2679401_lg.jpg)
Some lucky bastards managed to get their "Tomboy" 73 early, but of course I wasn't one of them. Shit, vinyl I've been waiting on since May hasn't even arrived yet, nevermind vinyl that hasn't even been released yet. Hopefully by Thursday I'll have it (I'll cut someone if I don't). Anyway, said lucky bastards ripped the vinyl to MP3, upped it to the interwebs and everyone collectively jizzed in their pants. It's the first new music by Mr. Bear from his upcoming album of the same name. Released as a 73 vinyl it's also the first of a bunch of [...]
Hi. Its understandable in today's modern music landscape to overlook the other types of music out there. What with musicians dressing-up like super villains and some of these same entertainers simultaneously distorting their voice electronically in ways I personally can do by simply flicking my throat whilst speaking, its also understandable that the casual music-listener tends to focus on all of the shiny bullshit while ignoring what other music is out there. Now, I don't wanna make this into [...]
![[Listen/Download] – Librarians – “Candy Season” and “Hard To Unwind”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2634086_lg.jpg)
Librarians come from West Virginia and play uplifting, ethereal electro-tinged indie pop. Their latest album, Present Passed, was released in March 2010, and the two singles here are a good taste of the record as a whole. “Candy Season” is as light and sweet as its name implies, building a summery pop melody on top of electronic beats. And “Hard To Unwind” weaves a wall of guitar feedback and electronic sound into an intriguing hybrid, like a more conventional Animal Collective. There’s also bits of The Beta Band and The Magnetic Fields in [...]
Chicago band, Yawn , just returned from SXSW where they played with Neon Indian at Levi's Fader Fort. They used to be called Metrovox, dabbled in the punk/emo scene, but were re-awoken sonically after they made a trip to Germany. Their sound takes tribal-esque rhythms, gorgeous pop melodies and rich vocal lines to create a sound that any fan of Animal Collective or Vampire Weekend will love. enjoY! Yawn - Kind Of Guy

I don't choose music these days. It chooses me. I'm temporarily without CD or Record player. Trapped in a room with just a little black box * and a big iPod on shuffle. I load it up and i t chooses the mood, decides on which kind of day it is. I'm learning to live with it, learning not to press on through the tracks, learning to believe that, if I've put it on there, it must be worth listening to all the way through. Mostly, there's a tangle of sounds. Mostly, there's no rhyme [...]

I realize I am putting this out really late. I always put this off until winter break, thinking I'll have tons of time to listen to the albums, but always underestimate how much I actually need to listen to. But honestly, that isn't a bad thing. I think we are living in a time where there is a lot more new and interesting stuff coming out than ever before. Last year, I probably listened to about 75 albums for my top albums article. Some of them only half way through (because I could tell they wouldn't make the cut) and [...]

Hey, look at that - we're still alive! Complete truth: I meant to post this a good week earlier, but was having server troubles. 2009 was a rough year, personally, for your poor webmistress, but it would take quite something to stop the compiling of year end lists. Though, 2009 wasn't such a competitive year for music, either, since this list wasn't the battle it was last year. No agonizing "I can't believe I have to leave this out!" cut offs, no close calls. Just 10 (... 11) albums that seemed to be the only things worth gracing [...]

At least we arrive at the top 25 tracks for 2009. Up front warning: Most of these tracks were released in 2009, but a few were actually released earlier but I found them in 2009, hence them showing up on the list below. 25. PET SHOP BOYS In 2009 we saw the the tenth studio album, “Yes”, from the Pet Shop Boys. And in true PSB manner, they delivered a well crafted synth pop track in "Love etc..." [...]
More up today from the experimental music ensemble Animal Collective and their most recent EP Fall Be Kind , released digitally on November 23rd of this year, and physically on the 15th of December. What Would I Want? Sky found it's way into the #11 spot on Pitchfork 's Top 100 Tracks of 2009, and was the 2nd song ever to receive a 10-out-of-10 rating from the publication; the first was While You Wait for the Others from the Brooklyn-based indie-rock band Grizzly Bear . Interestingly, the song features the first ever [...]

Sondre Lerche's Two Way Monologue (2004) used to be one of my favorite albums, but I have to admit that I haven't connected with his several releases since then nearly as much. I respect him a lot for experimenting, and trying out different sounds from jazz to indie rock, but none of it has really done much for me. He just sent out an acoustic cover he made of Animal Collective's "Bluish" off their highly acclaimed album, Merriweather Post Pavillion . It brought to mind Lerche's older work (meaning it's really good!), and I thought I'd [...]
