photo by Dan Muller/Trickshot Photography Fresh off her tour with Radiolab , Thao Nguyen and The Get Down Stay Down are streaming their new album We The Common. Featuring a collaboration song with Joanna Newsom , "Kindness Be Conceived", the album is catchy but surprising - Thao can easily move from sweetness to roaring in a jump and a skip. Photo by David Lichterman Everyone's favorite noise making revolutionaries Animal Collective released the new track "Crimson" yesterday on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show. In keeping with their sound, the song bubbles and burps and features some nice high singing by Avey Tare. The song will be featured as a b-side track on the single "Applesauce." Animal Collective also announced plans to have their rescheduled shows benefit the Red Cross. [ FADER, Pitchfork ] [...]

photo by Dave Lichterman As Amanda Palmer found out and, now Animal Collective's Deacon is discovering, crowd-sourced fundraising ain't as easy as it seems. In late 2009, Deacon, aka Josh Dibb, visited Mali, met with supporters of the anti-slavery movement and was invited to perform the Festival in the Desert. Inspired to apply his creative energies toward supporting the region, Deacon set up a his Kickstarter campaign to raise money by offering a book and CD of new music to donors, but after three years later and $25,000 [...]

photo by Morgen Schuler Following her arrest for hash possession last Thursday, Fiona Apple made her first statement on the arrest during a show in Houston the following night. Apple noted that while "most of [the people involved in her arrest] were very nice to me", Apple claimed that four related persons partook in "inappropriate and probably illegal" behavior. Watch fan footage of the quintessentially Fiona rant below. Former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg spends [...]

all photos by Dave Lichterman Animal Collective have long been known to dazzle and confuse audiences during their live performances, but nothing really could have prepared the crowd at Paramount for their Centipede Hz tour opener last Tuesday night. The stage was set in dazzling form, shaped with light up teeth above and surrounding, with a twirling collection of psychedelic tentacles spiraling into a massive light screen behind. Visually alone, the show was worth the ticket price. But combined with Animal Collective's surprisingly approachable set, and a fantastic opening set by [...]

Father John Misty / photo by Dave Lichterman We can sum up the somewhat short list of shows this week as follows: all killer, no filler. Starting at the Showbox at the Market on Monday night with Iration & The Expendables and Cisco Adler . Tuesday, Animal Collective and Micachu & The Shapes are at Paramount Theatre, Bob Mould plays Copper Blue and Silver Age at Showbox at the Market , Sweden's Holograms are at Barboza with FF , and James McMurtry and The Gourds [...]

Yesterday, we played a special live session with Animal Collective , recorded exclusively for KEXP at the Cutting Room Studios NYC. Today, you can hear it again... and again if you want! Featured in this session are the first and so far only recorded acoustic versions of songs from the new album, Centipede Hz - "Pulleys" and "Wide Eyed" - along with a plugged in version of "Honeycomb." Listen to these songs and an interview with the band by KEXP's DJ El Toro now:

Animal Collective don't really like the spotlight. With 20092s excellent Merriweather Post Pavilion , the group's guitarist and writer Deakin took a hiatus and the band pursued a more sampler heavy work. The resulting album was surprisingly more accessible than anything Animal Collective had generated prior. Songs like "My Girls" and "Summertime Clothes" got heavy airtime and even got played at some larger retail outlets. How did the group respond to this newfound attention? With their subsequent tour, they hardly touched the new record, and continued to confound audiences with their altogether obscure and dizzying live efforts (you'll [...]

Animal Collective recently stopped by KEXP at the Cutting Room Studios NYC to promote their latest album Centipede Hz . In addition to an interview, the band played acoustic versions of album tracks "Wide Eyed" and "Pulleys", as well as "Honeycomb" off the 73 they released earlier this year. The recording highlight the songsmanship that may sometimes get lost in the eccentric production by the group and makes us want an entire acoustic album from the band.

Labor Day week is bittersweet. It marks the end of Summer but also the oncoming onslaught of Fall releases, many anticipated and very likely be your favorites of the year. photo by Dave Lichterman Between touring eleven months out of the year and test driving some new tunes, Radiohead 's busy 2012 has kept their fans both satisfied and salivating. This weekend, however, they gifted their fans with not only news of some kind of collaboration with Jack White onstage at Bonnaroo, but also the debut of a completely new song, entitled "Full Stop." Although there's no formal information on the Jack White collab - a 73 on Third Man Records' Blue Series is the speculative consensus - there are a [...]
