Anna Ternheim - Fifth studio album since the Swedish singer/songwriter's 2004 debut full-length is yet another example of Ternheim's special ability in melding coolly plaintive, almost brittle folk/pop melodies with a warm, deeply intelligent personal style...the followup to 2008's fine "Leaving On A Mayday" is reflective of Ternheim's time on these shores -- there's a distinctive Americana feel to many of her new songs...ironically, a U.S. release is still TBA // Release : The Night Visitor (Out now in Europe) // Sounds like : dividing her time over the past few years between [...]

Video: Anna Ternheim, 'Black Light Shines' Matt Sweeney's latest collaboration arrives this month in the form of The Night Visitor , singer-songwriter Anna Ternheim's excellent fifth LP, which was just released in Europe. In addition to providing production for the 12-track effort, Sweeney recruited Superwolf bandmate Will Oldham to contribute vocals on a few cuts, as well as Ternheim's fellow Swedish new-folk outfit First Aid Kit for the debut single, "Walking Aimlessly." You can watch the full band take on that meandering tune here , but above is my preferred [...]
As much as we flat out adore the songs of Anna Ternheim -- and pine mightily for her upcoming album The Night Visitor (October 28 in Europe) -- we've also grown to love the Swedish songwriter's choice of covers over the years, from her take on David Bowie's "China Girl" to her 4-track collection of songs by Frank Sinatra (check out her amazing "New York, New York" after the jump). One of our faves is her take on "Little Lies", the Fleetwood Mac song written by Christine McVie. There's something so cool [...]

My maternal grandfather was a huge Frank Sinatra fan: one of my most powerful memories of him, in fact, is of my grandparents dancing in their Florida living room, strangely graceful and oblivious to the watching world, their wistful smiles and laugh lines framing faces aglow with an otherwise unseen affection, the swell of strings and Sinatra's voice pouring from the record player like a fog. A year later, they would give up the house, move North, and start their relatively short decline towards death, but it's here where I would remember them best: gliding in rare partnership, recapturing a lifetime I can only imagine. [...]

We're team players here at Cover Lay Down, and though it's been a bear of a month on the home front, it's been an especially good time to find great coverfolk "out there" in the bloggiverse. So today, we recognize our peers - enjoy the linkage, and don't forget to bookmark the blogs you discover along the way! Over at Cover Me , where a host of new contributors have cranked up the incidence of posting, Greg shares two new tracks from 20 year old singer-songwriter [...]

On Tuesday night, I had the privilege of going to see Ane Brun perform at Bowery Ballroom. Last time I saw her at Union Hall, she was amazing, but it wasn't an ideal show because of Union Hall's not very raised stage and me being not very tall and unable to see anything. So I snagged myself a front row spot at Bowery this time to make sure I could actually see my favorite Scandinavian songstress.

I somehow managed to reach full-bore adulthood without hearing a lick of Tom Waits . Which is probably all for the better: as I've noted many times , my long-standing preference for melodic voices is only now giving way to a mature appreciation of the unique beauty that springs from powerful truths filtered through broken instruments. And anyway, the Tom Waits songbook is eminently adult, both in the way it looks at the world through bleary, jaded, ancient eyes and the way it rattles about with themes of alcoholics, lonesome trainwatchers, [...]

Anna Ternheim - What Have I Done (Familjen Remix) [Stream] We posted Anna Ternheim's lovely What have I done a while ago . Now she's back with a new, excellent single - Make it on my own - and an updated version of her album, for the US market. On the flip side of the new single, we found this adorable jaunty electro pop remix of What have I done by another fave, the Swedish one-man electro outfit Familjen . Check out the new [...]
You know what they say about big titles...Earlier I posted a little something by Benjamin Diamond, remixed by Alan Braxe. So I did some searching and came across some tunes from Mr. Diamond's album. This is one of my favorites, and the only two words I need to describe it are: love and music.Benjamin Diamond - Little ScareAnd then I have a jam by a group I know everyone's pretty tight with

Swedish songstress Anna Ternheim opened the night, borrowing a few members of Loney Dear to provide the instrumentation behind her sweet pipes. The collaboration worked beautifully, as Ternheim's tunes align more closely with Loney Dear's gentle style than the Asobi Seksu set that would follow. Undoubtedly, Ternheim won over some new fans; she made the most of her opening opportunity, and was called back to the stage by the crowd for an encore, despite only being the appetizer. As Asobi Seksu took the stage, it quickly became clear that [...]

Anna Ternheim | Bowery Ballroom | October 16, 2009 Last night at the Bowery Ballroom, Anna Ternheim brought her beautiful songs to the stage. She was aided by members of Lonely, Dear, who acted as her backing band for the evening. I'm not usually a fan of a single person with an acoustic guitar, but Ternheim is one of the few who can do it right. It was a quiet way to kick off the weekend, a soft preparation for the later acts, Asobi Seksu and Lonely, Dear. [...]
