Chennai-based publishers Blaft have gained a lot of notoriety and acclaim for their anthologies, namely The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction Vol. 1 & 2 . So when they announced the release of their new anthology The Obliterary Journal, we immediately decided to get in touch with Blaft editor Rakesh Khanna to get a lowdown on what readers can expect from it. Rakesh, a mathematician from U.C Berkeley and IIT-Madras, moved to Chennai in 1998. After almost ten years of being fascinated with the lurid covers of pulp magazines at local tea stands, he established Blaft with [...]

We all know that the true meaning of Christmas is: presents, turkey and selection boxes. Sometimes, however, people think it's ok to hijack all the fun to talk about charity. BORING. We are joking of course. Charity is our second favourite thing beginning with 'ch'. And it is made even better when people who we like do songs to promote charity. So we were quite thrilled to find out Paul Thomas Saunders (whose voice can bring us to tears in approximately six seconds) has done a charity [...]
The latest edition of De Capo's annual Best Music Writing anthology just dropped, and in addition to the 32 essays published in this year's book they have published an extensive list of honorable men

Chicago house is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment with sites like Class of 808 and Legendary Children supplying all the squelch you could possibly desire. Faced with this tsunami of acid it's nice to hear an alternative take on the genre. Nothing too radical but this mix, as part of the Anthology of American Acid , takes a DJ Screw inspired approach slowing the tracks to a grinding pace and chopping and screwing them together. It really works and helps add a refreshing new angle to a [...]

The 37-track collection includes singles, demos, remixes and live recordings compiled by File 13 owner and Atombombpocketknife guitarist Justin Sinkovich (who in addition to all those things also co-founded the Chicago-based free music website Epitonic ). Before calling it quits with a final show at the Empty Bottle in 2005, after eight years together, Atombombpocketknife recorded three full-length albums and one [...]

The jacket may be drab (though arty), but there's not a dull track in the bunch. I was expecting the playlist to maybe drag a little, but every performance is first-rate, and every number an inspired choice. It's nice enough to have a version of the 1866 classic, Ring the Bells of Heaven , but to have one by the Old Fashioned Revival Hour Quartet... priceless. Well, 99 cents, but that was for everything. And it's always a treat to hear good, solid renditions of I Will Sing to My Redeemer (here titled [...]

by BBG Featuring members who would go on to join Straight Ahead , Youth of Today , Sick of It All , Agnostic Front , and many notable others, NYC Mayhem was a short-lived hardcore band that flirted with death metal and crossover in 1985. While that lineup may indicate a particular aesthetic, NYC Mayhem definitely owed as much to metallic greats like Slayer, Venom, and Dirty Rotten Imbeciles as they did to Necros, Void, or [...]
A progressive rock extravaganza is contained on these retrospective collections.

A few days ago, a video of Dustin Kensrue performing a new Thrice song acoustic surfaced online. The band have followed it up with a proper studio rendition. This is still only acoustic, but it's an awesome preview and I can only imagine what it sounds like backed by the whole band. Grab it down low DOWNLOAD // ANTHOLOGY
Filed under: News , New Releases Paul Smith, Empics/PA Throwing Muses are to release a 'Best Of' set that features the Rhode Island group's favourite tracks -- and true to the group's dislike of the obvious, it won't simply collate popular tunes. The release of the Rhode Island band's first ever compilation coincides with the 25th anniversary of the indie group's debut album 'Untitled.' 'Anthology' features 21 "personal favourites," a [...]
