The Boswell Sisters were a close harmony singing group, consisting of sisters Martha Boswell (June 9, 1905 – July 2, 1958), Connee Boswell (original name Connie) (December 3, 1907 – October 11, 1976), and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell (May 20, 1911 – November 12, 1988), noted for intricate harmonies and rhythmic experimentation. They attained national prominence in the USA in the 1930s. The Boswell Sisters "took the idea of jazz and did it vocally." - Maxene Andrews Ttocselad has compiled a [...]
Song poems are songs created around submitted lyrics for a fee. Known as song sharking, the practice typically involves cranking out tunes for next to no cost and with little effort in order to make a fat profit off those who submit their poetry to be set to music. The results are typically bizarre and are sought out by lovers of the obscure and unusual. For more than a year, the Happy Puppy Records netlabel and Bob Purse of The Wonderful and the Obscure [...]
I haven't listened to much new stuff, lately, I'll be honest. What follows below is a Stygian tour through the only new(ish) released to attract my darkest of hearts. Dark heart? I dunno. It's off-white, anyway. Kind of an "egg cream" white, one might say. Pig Destroyer, Book Burner : Their ...And Justice For All-- No low end, weirdly boxy production that somehow contributes to the overall pure dexterity and fury of this band. This and Monolith of Inhumanity fucking tower over ever other grind/ death grind release this year. My no. 3 of [...]
[author-name] Lili Boniche – Anthologie Lili Boniche Anthologie (World Village, 2013) Karina Feredj honored her late father, the Algerian crooner and lute player Lili Boniche with the retrospective Anthologie. While I know little about Lili Boniche besides what I’ve read in the liner notes, the songs on this album, especially the Arab-Andalusian songs such as ‘Ana Fil Houb’ sound familiar to my ears. Have I heard these songs on [...]
When it comes to great Cincinnati related vinyl projects, Shake It Records does some cool stuff. And this new mission is no exception. I think what I love about releases like this is not only the nostalgia for our great city, but the fact that Shake It just has interesting ideas and makes them happen. So I'm happy today to be letting you know about " Play It Like You Did Back To George Street: An Anthology of Cincinnati Blues 1927-1936 ." It's 29 tracks of pre-war Cincinnati blues that includes [...]

Dream-pop producer Madeaux has done something rather innovative with this track. At a loss as to which Beat Culture song to tinker with, Madeaux decided to melt several of his favourites together to create a seamless minimix of sorts. 'Belonging (Madeaux Anthology Mix)' is a floating, electro soul filled, breeze of a tune.
Not only have fIREHOSE reformed for Coachella and elsewhere but there appears to be a compilation of the Columbia stuff on its way. This is a good thing, because while the SST albums were probably better on the whole, all fIREHOSE is good fIREHOSE. And besides that it will include the Live Totem Pole EP, which is not only hard to find but contains great covers of songs by Public Enemy, the Butthole Surfers, Wire, etc. Given that fIREHOSE is essentially the best bass 'n' drums in the world - the sainted Mike Watt and the [...]
"Guys ! Here is a mashup i did for you cause i am working hard on the EP so i think i will not upload a lot of tunes for a long. Reviews for the album were positive, but for some reason the band still had a negative image. Really, you'd never make a lot of connection between Steve Miller and the Beatles. Miller's music has always been blues-based; he never showed a whole lot of Beatles influence (although I suppose you could make a case for "Rock 'n' Me" being somewhat like "Get Back"). So it surprised the heck out of me back in the late '70s when I bought Miller's Anthology double album, which compiled the [...]

Why Horror Anthologies Need to Make a Comeback
Ian Buckwalter : While one hopes that these talented directors can use their tightly crafted shorts as calling cards for bigger productions, it would be nice if this signaled a potential renaissance for the notion of horror anthologies as well. Audiences have a hunger for short films that is rarely addressed: Witness the crowds that show up for collections of Oscar-nominated shorts every winter. Anthologies, while notoriously uneven, can also be audience-friendly, given that viewers don't have to commit to two hours of something they decided 10 minutes in that they weren't going to like. Carrying [...]

Witch Cross- “Rocking the Night Away”
Rocking the Night Away by WITCH CROSS Here's a bit of heavy metal from a rock band time forgot: Witch Cross. The Danish group didn't have a lot of releases in their heyday, but what they did put out was pretty tight, anthemic, and catchy. The label Hell's Headbangers is putting out an anthology release for the band, featuring 3 CDs and 1 DVD. "Rocking the Night Away" comes off the compilation, and has a nice vintage flavor to it. The guitar riffs hit a nice groove, and Alex "Savage" Nyborg Madsen's vocals pierce [...]

Chaos in Tejas Preview: The Clean
We continue our Chaos in Tejas coverage with one of the bands that I'm most excited to see, New Zealand's The Clean! Anytime you listen to some jangling garage pop track, or off-beat power pop, the odds are, that band was influenced by the Clean , who've been releasing songs since 1981; their first single is the track we're featuring below. They didn't actually release a full-length album until almost a decade into their career, instead compiling tons of singles to release as compilations on the legendary Flying [...]

Wolfgang Gartner – Anthology (Madeon Mashup)
No cool live-mashup clip from our French native this time, I just used a pic from the 'Pop-Culture' video to remind you of what he's responsible for. You might have even heard Zedd drop this jam at EDC Vegas 2011 if you were at the Mecca of EDM last year. This Madeon mashup is very clean, [...]
