Alt-rapper and Slacker Shack favourite, Aesop Rock has teamed up with anti-folk songstress (and ex- The Moldy Peaches singer-songwriter) Kimya Dawson to form a duo called, The Uncluded . The two are good friends and have worked together previously on Aesop 's 2012 album Skelethon and Dawson 's 2011 album Thunder Thighs . The [...]
[photo by acidjack] It is a pure coincidence that our next post after Diane Cluck is her sometime collaborator and fellow anti-folk alum Jeffrey Lewis . We spoke at length with Jeffrey after his entertaining performance at the first night of the Don Giovanni Records showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday night. Speaking to Jeffrey is almost as entertaining as seeing him live, but we also learned that he was in fact at the Diane Cluck show on Tuesday. It is not a coincidence however that the two artists [...]
[still from this video ] I think its fair to say that Diane Cluck has had an admirable but unconventional career. As part of the early 20002s NYC anti-folk movement, she's been an abundant songwriting and performing talent for well over a decade. But while some of her early contemporaries have moved to major labels, Diane has eschewed conventional success to pursue a more rewarding personal journey. But it seems that despite her uncompromising career choices, her time has come. Last Spring, Diane introduced her "Song of the Week" , where in a kickstarter-style [...]

It'd be a tad conceited of me to think that you might need me to tell you who Jeffrey Lewis is but it's still kind of my job (like how air hostesses keep explaining what to do in an emergency, even though you already know), so here it goes...New York musician/cartoonist Jeffrey Lewis kicked off his "antifolk" dubbed music career back in 1997 before signing with the UK's Rough Trade label in 2001 and releasing the acclaimed and adored "The Last Time I Did Acid I Went Insane and Other Favorites," which was followed [...]

We've written about Vadoinmessico before, and Notional Towns sure ain't a new song (it surfaced back in May, if you're interested). So why, you might reasonably wonder, write about it now. Mainly because, as a clearly inefficient blogger, I've only just properly heard it, now, in the damp dregs of November (via #10 in Croaks Loud A Cloud's ace series of Eclectika podcasts ). And also due to the fact that I now utterly adore the song, and am listening to / swooning over its scintillating guitars on a cycle of repeats [...]
Nashville's the kind of town where infamous events are kinda' commonplace. Stuff of legend happens on the regular and it's often pretty bizarre. Ryan Adams throws out a drunken heckler for demanding he play “Summer of '69” (not cool, bro), John Mayer makes a tearful apology to his bandmates at Bridgestone Arena for his racist(?) remarks in an ill-advised Playboy interview (really not cool, bro), Shaun White trashes a hotel room (wait, you're not a rockstar). And in 2007, sweet Regina Spektor collapsed from vertigo resulting from the mother of all ear [...]

© Ren Aldridge 2012 If you've read my review , you'll know that I really like Feralus . The southern trio are one of the most exciting and interesting new acts of the year and I was happy to host them (well, 2/3 of them) at a show in Manchester a few months back. Though the absence of Perkie was certainly felt, Ren and Katie were fantastic and were nice enough to play a couple of songs in front of the camera for Loitering With Intent. The pair played 'Skinny Bones' - [...]

Feralus are a three-piece anti-folk collective from the South of England, made up of Ren [Spits At Magpies], Katie Raine and Perkie. Be it the dynamic of the band, the choice of instrumentation or the bluntly political lyrics, t he trio have created something that hasn't quite existed in the UK's current punk scene until now. In the space of this EP, each member has a chance to show you what they've got. Perkie-lead opener, 'Footsteps & Silhouettes' is my favourite of the five songs. The former King Blues keys players dulcet tones are flawless as she serenades the listener with [...]

Perhaps my friend Shane and I are the only one interested in this, but I'm sure we're both really excited. Chris Eaton's Rock Plaza Central project has been sporadic at times, but that shouldn't take away from the great body of work, such as my personal favorite, Are We Not Horses . Chris has just re-released one of the group's early recordings, Quantum Butterass , and I've really been enjoying getting to see where the band began. The track I posted has some similarities [...]

Listen to a Regina Spektor song, and within the first note, you know who's singing; through an eclectic career that has spanned all of the 2000s, her voice has remained the one constant. On "Small Town Moon," the first track of Regina's sixth and latest full-length album, she sings, "Today we're younger than we're ever gonna be- whoooo!" Yup. Sounds like Regina to me. That's why fans, or really anyone who has ever fallen under the spell of Regina's classic yet whimsical sound (and who hasn't?), will love What We Saw From the Cheap [...]
New York’s quirky piano balladeer brings a strong effort, with a few overindulgent missteps.

As the countdown ends, Tom Williams & The Boat's "Teenage Blood" stalks in on an immensely satisfying riff; the same kind of jangly madness you might hear in your city bars at night. The difference? There's a dissonance in the makeup of this song, an edge that gives "Teenage Blood" the kind of quality that the title promises. Ultimately, lead singer Tom Williams vocal style reminds me a lot of Carl Barât circa Dirty Pretty Things. This may seem like an odd comparison, but I have to say as a huge fan of said lyricist there's not much [...]

Blood Red Shoes are back and with their most ambitious album yet! Laura-Mary Carter described the album: "With this album we totally threw out the rulebook of how we write and record" Recorded at The Motor Museum in Liverpool with old friend and co-producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Foals, Tribes). You can buy ‘Cold’ on March 19th and the album on March 26th, you can find pre-order links at their website (which is linked at the bottom of the page) In Time To Voices: The opening to the track sounds so slick and polished, Blood Red Shoes are [...]
For someone who told Pitchfork they don't feel like a musician just yet, Willis Earl Beal does a fine job of conveying emotions through soulful vocals and incredibly relatable lyrics just like one would expect a (good) musician to do. In his video for "Evening's Kiss," which channels the piercing acoustic style of Elliott Smith, we see an melancholic Beal walk through what seems like a pretty typical day. The video, which Beal illustrated, tugs at the heart strings and reminds of "Waking Life." Beal's debut Acousmatic Sorcery is out [...]

The story of Willis Earl Beal rise to professional musician status sounds more like an inspirational disney movie than reality. After working a number of odd jobs in Albuquerque, NM, Beal was discovered originally not for his music, but an intriguing letter left on city sidewalks in which he was seemingly looking for a female companion. In fact, the Chicago Reader's Leor Galil did a great job of describing his, I guess, humble beginnings to his move back to his hometown of Chicago and eventual arrival [...]
