Frank Yang I don't think Toronto necessarily has an international reputation as a destination for expatriate pop geniuses, but apparently Canadian women hold a certain appeal for them. Joe Pernice of Pernice Brothers has been up here for the better part of eight years while Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub moved to Kitchener a couple years ago - both on account of their Canadian wives - and on Friday night, they were on stage together at The Dakota Tavern for a low-key show together. It had been advertised as a Joe Pernice [...]

I've been thinking a lot about the list-making process. Someone recently asked me: What is the purpose of making a list? My initial reaction - because it's fun - is actually somewhat shallow. Is it really? Yeah, probably...somewhat...maybe? But if so, still: Why? In listening to me think out loud about this, my wife commented that she doesn't make lists for fun. Why, then? "To keep myself sane. To make sure I don't forget things I need to do." In other words: To make order out of chaos. To provide structure to an unstructured world. As [...]

Frank Yang Most bands that name themselves for prehistoric entities - your Mastadons, your Dinosaur Jrs - seem to do so at least a little for the heavy and/or primal connotations that come with it. Not so much for Brooklyn's Caveman , who seem to have chosen the name ironically as there's nothing raw or neolithic about their smooth and polished debut album Coco Beware . Rather than club you about the head with a bone, Caveman makes an impression with shimmering guitars, floaty synths and tight harmonies delivering [...]

(photo by cubagallery ) After what felt like an explosion of great albums last year, 2011 seemed a bit less monumental to me. On the plus side though, the shortage of heavy hitters in the indie rock genre did allow ample opportunity for diversification. Looking over the year's best, there's much more representation from music of the electronic, folk, pop, and experimental persuasion than in previous years. Another theme seemed to be awesome sophomore albums with bands like Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes, Lykke Li, The Antlers, Girls, and Smith Westerns all producing albums that break the sophomore [...]

Amazingly enough, 2011 has already come and gone, but with it came a slew of glorious, captivating records. From the return of veterans Bright Eyes , Wilco , and Death Cab for Cutie , to sophomore explosions from The Antlers , Girls , Bon Iver , and Fleet Foxes , and jaw-dropping debuts from Youth Lagoon , James Blake , You Won't , and Caveman , this has been one incredible year of music for us. Say what you will about this year versus the [...]

Girls ::: photo by Josh Lovseth End of year lists give me the cold sweats. Much like when I was in college and finals were looming, I suddenly forget about everything that sparked in my mind, and all I’m left with is, “I don’t know…when did River Deep, Mountain High come out? THAT COUNTS, RIGHT?” 2011 was [...]

50 The notion of compiling a "50 Best Songs of the Year" list is preposterous. In addition to the absurd presumption that songs across genres can be objectively compared in some meaningful way, such a list ignores the fact that one's experience of a song is entirely situational, as dependent on one's mood and temperament as on any musical detail. Indeed, a list of this type is bound to almost destined to disappoint, confuse, or perhaps even enrage the reader. And yet we worked our asses off on this one. Staffer Peter Lillis, co-editor [...]

We have once again invited some folks whose opinions we trust to share their favorite releases of 2011. Check out the artists on these list and the folks recommending them (most of whom are in bands of their own). You should be able to purchase each record through the attached link or visit your local independent record store and buy it there. Matt Jarrard of Oryx and Crake and Book Club is the first to share his list with us which makes it the first we will share with you. Check back for more. Enjoy. [...]

Much of Colorado got their first taste of snow this season and it has a lot of people excited about the white stuff. The weather inspires me to make mixtapes, and today is no exception. I will enjoy my snow-day catching up on missed shows, reading and listening to lots and lots of music. For those of you that are at home playing hooky, enjoy, and those of you that had to work, keep truckin'. Winter Watch Mixtape Tracklisting Molly Nilsson-Hey moon! The Antlers-Corsicana Bloc Party-Blue Light [...]

Sebastian Slayter I've read a few things about Pacific Northwest by way of New York trio Widowspeak that reference the darkness of their music; the haunting tones, yearning vocals and occasional forays into guitar squalls. Perfectly fair. And most everything written about them mentions the smoky vocals of Molly Hamilton and its immediate reference points of Hope Sandoval and Cat Power. Also totally valid. And yet listening to their self-titled debut , despite the truth of those points and the fact that I like amounts of all of these things [...]
![SASQUATCH 2011 AWARDS [FESTIVAL]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3499815_lg.jpg)
When asked to choose my favorite moments of Sasquatch 2011 I draw a blank, there were too many. Too many sets I loved, too many moments of pure glee- so instead I decided to give away a list of Hannah Angst certified Sasquatch Awards: Robyn : Seriously, that sound check was so long that it was almost a surprise when she began performing. Granted, when she did arrive onstage, she managed to make me forget that I had waited [...]

I have a confession to make. I've never been to a proper festival. Not the kind that gets covered by all the big blogs and newspapers, not the kind where people from all over the country drop everything to go, and certainly not the kind where you camp out for four days. Soon, though, my festival cherry will be popped by the prom king of music festivals, Sasquatch! I’m so excited, I think I may actually punch someone! I've been told time and time again that Sasquatch is one of the best fests in the US. It's been [...]

Frank Yang This show was a week ago; I think this may actually be my longest delay between witness and writeup ever and, in fact, Jeff Tweedy's solo tour is just about over. So if you were waiting on some kind of report from opening night at Toronto's Queen Elizabeth Theatre to decide if it was worth picking up one of the few remaining tickets for a later date... I'm sorry. Sorry that you would allow anything I say or do to influence your decision-making - you know I'm drunk most of the time, [...]

When Sufjan Stevens's new album Age of Adz hit the web, apart from the auto-tune section in "Impossible Soul", the most talked thing about the album was the multiple F-bomb drops in the song "I Want To Be Well". Rewind a couple months back and Cee-Lo's delightful anthem "F*** You" was making waves for it's incessant usage of the word. So, inspired by the recent upswing of F-bombin', I've made a mix of my favorite songs using the notorious word (with the lyric in question highlighted below). Let me know some of your favorites in the f***ing comments. [...]

"Something in my throat made my next words shake, And something in the wires made the lightbulbs break..." Sunday morning brings yet more hangovers but we’re all buzzing as we know we will we seeing the mighty Wilco tonight. But before Jeff Tweedy and co. give what we hope will be the defining performance of the festival there is a final day of cracking music before us… Dylan LeBlanc tells the crowd that he will be our Sunday lunchtime hangover music and this turns [...]

Anyone who considers themselves to be a fan of Americana and/or Folk music should have heard of End Of The Road festival by now. Since it first began back in 2006 some of the biggest and best artists of these two genres have graced it's stages. From singer-songwriters such as Ryan Adams, Bon Iver and Conor Oberst to mega-bands like Explosions In The Sky, Fleet Foxes, The Hold Steady and Okkervil River, the festivals line-up has never once disappointed. Even by their own high standards the organisers have stepped it up another level again for [...]

Mash-Ups, Covers, and Remixes often seem to rub people the wrong way. I like to think of them more as interpretations. Just take them for what they are. No one is going to make a Bob Marley song as well as Bob, but you can interpret it in a new way. So here are some covers and mash-ups that I have been into semi-lately. DOWNLOAD all the songs HERE 1. Andrew Bird – Imitosis (Four Tet Remix) [...]
