As a kid, my Christmas wish lists were pretty standard; a football, maybe some comic books, a video game if I was feeling particularly good that year. Now, I've heard of kids getting puppies and I'm sure one little girl out there still asks for a pony every year, but Portland songwriter Anya Marina outdoes them all by requesting a Hippo. Which is crazy if you ask me, I mean, do you know how hungry those things get?? Actually, Marina's "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas" is a version of an old novelty song, written back in the [...]

Béatrice Martin is Coeur de Pirate of Montreal whose 2008 self-titled debut was widely successful. It came out when I was living in the french speaking part of Switzerland and it was all we heard on the radio and in the shops. We even had to write the lyrics to her songs in french class. I fell for that album and it led me into a world of french pop with which I'm still steadfastly obsessed. While she sings mainly in french she is bilingual and has done some great covers in english in the past. [...]

"FELONY FLATS" – which follows 2009's acclaimed label debut, "SLOW & STEADY SEDUCTION: PHASE II" – marks a major leap forward for the Portland, Oregon-based singer/songwriter. The self-produced album sees Marina joined by some of the Pacific Northwest's finest musicians, including guitarist Cody Votolato (Blood Brothers, Telekinesis), bassist Jeff Bond, drummer Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse, Mister Heavenly),...

Photo from Anyamarina.com Musician/DJ Anya Marina has announced the details of her upcoming album, which is due out next year on Chop Shop/Atlantic Records. Marina, once based in California, is now a full-time Portland resident, and the forthcoming record bears clear evidence of this: She's given it the title Felony Flats . No word if it's a concept album about meth tweakers hanging out on SE Foster, but the record (which Marina produced herself) contains local guest musicians like drummer Joe Plummer [...]

Georgia On My Mind is most commonly associated with Ray Charles. It appears on every tribute album to Ray, and Willie Nelson (who recorded the song in 1978) sang it at his funeral. But Georgia was a standard long before Ray Charles made it his own. It was written by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Stuart Gorrell in 1930. The story goers that the Georgia of the title was originally intended to refer to Hoagy's sister, but realising that Gorell's words could apply also to the southern US state, the writers were happy to keep things ambiguous. The plan [...]

Bird Of Youth has no business being this good. Really. If writing and recording a really beautiful album was as easy as Beth Wawerna and her crew made it look, wouldn't everyone do it? That's sort of the story here. For most of her decade in New York, Wawerna was, in the words of her pal [...]
Not going to lie...I didn't know who Anya Marina was until recently. Well actually, I did. I had heard her music but didn't know it was her's. After scoping her out on MySpace and doing some research, it became apparent that though we may not recognize her name, you've probably heard her music via Gossip Girl, [...]
