The Goddesses of hype and fanfare have been smitten with the Arctic Monkeys since their debut album, Whatever People Say that I Am, That’s What I’m Not , became the fastest selling British debut in history. The album, a frenzied postcard from the pubs and dance floors of England, thrust the band into the proverbial spotlight and tagged them as the next big thing. Although hype can be a hard thing to live up to, they were anything but one hit wonders, and the love affair continued with their sparkling sophomore effort, Favourite Worst Nightmare . [...]
I wasn't going to do this. Working on the Best Albums of the 2000s was going to be enough work. But after reading through some pretty great lists by Pitchfork , I Guess I'm Floating and Gorilla vs Bear , I was reminded of something very important - although the album is the most vital instrument a musician has at his disposal to get an idea or feeling across to listeners, we can't undermine the importance of a song. A song gives you small doses of relief, comfort, or what have you, minutes at [...]

Humbug review and CD + LP giveaway. Remember when the Arctic Monkeys were supposed to be the next big thing? It was back when a bunch of new bands were hitting the scene and everyone was drinking the We Are Scientists Kool-Aid. It was late 2005, and the Arctic Monkeys were the talk of the town, the saviors of indie rock, the heir apparent to the newly built Franz Ferdinand throne. “I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor” had people dancing across a number of continents, and their cheekily titled album, Whatever People [...]

One man's report from the dank depths of Perry Farrell's pride and joy. Lollapalooza 2009 was hot and damp and generally less-than. But try the Falafel Pita and steer clear of Dave Navarro's ego, if you can.

With weather reports predicting high temperatures of up to 95 degrees, day two of Lollapalooza wasn't exactly going to be a walk in the park, either. Well, in some respects it was, but you get the idea. By high noon, mile-long lines had already gathered at every beverage stand, and hundreds of bikini-clad girls flashed around their fresh and fashionable sunburns. Neither shade nor sunscreen made a difference - even the Ice Cream Man couldn't save the day! Instead, while the heat continued to join the thousands of Lollagoers, a mighty wind picked up the slack, cooling things down and [...]
The album strays into darker territory on the tracks produced by Homme, while the Scott Walker sound of the Last Shadow Puppets imbues the songs produced by Ford. It makes for a tremendously uneven listen, with the band struggling to deliver something new and challenging, while also sounding careful not to repeat themselves in any way.
The goal for day two of All Point West, at least in the eyes of the promoters, was to make you forget that just 24 hours ago, you or someone you know got drenched. And probably complained about it, ... Continue reading "All Points West Saturday: Mud, Tool, and the Mighty My Bloody Valentine" >

Arctic Monkeys ' come back is always going to be big news. Monday saw the first play of 'Crying Lightning' – the debut single from the band's upcoming third album, 'Humbug'. The record - which is set to be released in August - was produced by Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. Judging by the album's debut single (which TGTF is ganna be checking out today), Homme's dark, sultry influence on 'Humbug' is clear from the outset. I must admit, however, on first listen, I was very unimpressed by 'Crying Lightning'. It sounded like a [...]

I don't want to ruin anything about either of these videos if you haven't seen them yet, but let's just say they more in common than being singles from two of this year's best releases so far (Grizzly Bear's Veckatimest and Yeah Yeah Yeahs' It's Blitz!). Up first, Grizzly Bear's new video for "Two Weeks" from Veckatimest , officially released yesterday. If you're following boxofboom on Twitter , you might have already read that Amazon has the album on sale for only $3.99. The video is directed by [...]
