What's in a picture? A story, a message, a moment, a memory? Often it's a combination of these and much more, as the world around us is seen through our own unique lens. And while a plethora of pictures are taken in a day, which ones remain, and become timeless? Many times what an image becomes isn't up to the photographer but more so people who celebrate an image that may be revered and remembered later on. These questions come to mind when examining the photo collection of Tim Mantoani . Capturing portraits of photographers holding their most iconic [...]

The Awl has an interview with the street artist Hanksy , who takes images from Banksy and incorporates Tom Hanks into the mix. It's fairly cheeky and fully awesome. The interview was done by EA Hanks, who, if I'm correct, is actually Tom Hanks' daughter. It's just an extra layer of awesome. EA : Regarding your work, Tom Hanks sends the message, "I don't know who Hanksy is, but I enjoy his (her?) comments via the semi-chaos of artistic expression." Do you know if Banksy knows as well? Hanksy : [...]

Chennai-based publishers Blaft have gained a lot of notoriety and acclaim for their anthologies, namely The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction Vol. 1 & 2 . So when they announced the release of their new anthology The Obliterary Journal, we immediately decided to get in touch with Blaft editor Rakesh Khanna to get a lowdown on what readers can expect from it. Rakesh, a mathematician from U.C Berkeley and IIT-Madras, moved to Chennai in 1998. After almost ten years of being fascinated with the lurid covers of pulp magazines at local tea stands, he established Blaft with [...]

Nor does Nico, one of many facts gleaned from his [...]
"That's probably the hardest I've worked on any project," says Avi Spivak , the illustrator behind Norton Records ' recent issue of Kicksville Confidential . And if you've seen Kicksville , released this past October, you'll understand what he means by "hard work" -- the Brooklyn-based artist's painstaking renderings of Norton stars are as detailed as they are funny, and they're clearly the toil of someone with a deep interest in u-ground comics and gutsy r'n'r alike. In Spivak's enthusiastic scrawl -- part Kaz, part MAD , part G. Panter, part [...]
The music in the video above was created by Bartholomäus Traubeck by slicing a tree in cross-section, sticking it on a turntable, and dropping a tone-arm with a PlayStation Eye Camera in the head, and processing its output through Ableton Live . It's perhaps the most mesmerizing thing I've heard in a long, long while. It's also the sound of a tree slice! [via Clusterflock ]

Buckle up, kids, it's about to get weird. RubiCANE is the newest project from painter and singer (and one half of the Correspondents ) Ian Bruce. It's an artistic and poetic exploration of the sexual, with the self-professed aim of exposing the "different tastes and desires that pornography caters for". We sat down with Ian and got our hands on SOUVENIR, the limited edition book around which the project revolves, and which is the focus of a new exhibition at The Society Club in Soho. Be warned – what follows is not for prudish eyes. The [...]
We hate having to hear Tori Amos compare herself to the new artists. What she has to offer no one can offer and she still remains better than most artists in the music industry. Tori, channel your energies into an album and don't worry about the kids. By the way what happened to the instrumental album?
