When we last checked in with Everyone Everywhere bassist Matt Scottoline, he had just released a set of free music by what we thought was a one-off side project, Hurry . The lofty Slowdive-esque fuzz and whimsical arrangements of the EP instantly hooked us, and apparently, they had the same effect on Scottoline. Some sporadic demos and samplers later, Hurry is now streaming its debut full-length on Bandcamp and making its live debut opening for Slow Club at Johnny Brenda's . Give the set a listen below, and catch the show this Wed. Feb. 15; Hurry [...]

Holy crap have I fallen in love with a band/record out of nowhere. Baobab, essentially Phil Torres (with some help from Whitney Trettien ), based out of Durham, North Carolina, just released their debut s/t album, and it couldn't sound less like a debut. Complex, mature, and impeccably arranged, the album is nothing short of hypnotizing. Spring, Baobab welcomes you into their arms. Baobab - "Music for a Movie" [MP3] Baobab - "Spring Forward" [MP3] Baobab - "Apples in April" [MP3] [...]

It's no secret that we love Morr Music around these parts . So when we hear about a new Morr artist, we're quick to jump on them. Fenster, a New York/Berlin based trio, are set to release their new album, Bones , March 13, just in time for their US live debut and SXSW. Fenster makes experimental, melodic folk/pop, as expected from a Morr artist, but they slightly veer from the label's popular electronic pop sound. Check out one of the singles off Bones below. It's quickly becoming a favorite with that [...]

Photo by Eric Schuman For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Arrah and the Ferns , the country-tinged four piece that self-released its latest EP, Soldier Ghost , in fall of 2011. In our interview, singer-guitarist Arrah Fisher talks about coming to Philadelphia from Muncie, Indiana; finding her voice as a songwriter; and the affinity for old country music she discovered after moving to a new city. Watch the video and download the Key Studio Session below, and catch the band in concert on March 2 when it plays Milkboy Philly [...]
![[MP3] Barna Howard: "Promise, I Won't Laugh"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4035363_lg.jpg)
Barna Howard sounds more like a lost genius from the 60's than a man about to release his debut album. The first track from Howard's self-titled album is "Promise, I Won't Laugh", a contemplative folk-song sung in the style of early 1960's folk singers like Dylan and Pete Seeger. Howard cites Neil Young, Bert Jansch and Townes Van Zandt as influences, but he does a nice job of not channeling them in any overtly recognizable way. This song is straightforward and well executed, making it all the more surprising and exciting that this is coming from his first record. Take [...]

Not sure how I missed this a couple months ago, but Cultfever, a New York duo, released a stunning s/t debut album in November. J. Peter Durniak and Tamara Jafar, the driving Cultfever forces, created an extraordinarily lush album opener with "Knewyouwell," showcasing Jafar's charmingly innocent vocals and an array of experimental electronics. Photo by John Vettese The guys in Philadelphia's Univox are rock synthesizers. That's not synthesizers in the EMF / Brian Eno sense - though truly it would be awesome to have a set of keys and bank of sounds literally at your fingertips - but rather in the sense that they're musicians who pull tones and timbres from the disparate styles of the past three decades, and recontextualize them as something all their own. Or, if that sounds too smarty-pants for you, try this: I trust you've heard those cliche comparisons, "sounds like the [...]

Swedish music has found its proper place in my ears again thanks to Billy Momo, the duo of Oskar Hovell and Tomas Juto. As their website says, "Some call it "americana gypsy music". Some call it "hick RnB"." Check out a couple tracks below off their recently released debut album, Ordinary Men . It's easy listening, which in this case certainly doesn't mean a lack of depth, but rather a pleasantry I hope to find in all music. The choral end of "So Tired" is wholly satisfying.

Josh and Mer are, unsurprisingly, Josh Schroeder and Meredith Adelaide, a duo out of Portland, Oregon. No, but really, their shortened band name is symbolic of their dressed down sound, stripping away the complexities while providing a simple, whimsical brand of indie pop. Their debut album, Planet Music , can be heard on Soundcloud , and you can download the lead single below. Josh and Mer - "From The Sea" [MP3] Josh and Mer on the web | Facebook | Tumblr

Some days music owns you. Sometimes you come across a piece of music that literally stops you in your tracks. As each phrase passes you don't move an inch, voluntarily paralyzed, for fear of missing or accidentally drowning out some subtle nuance. This music reaches deeper than other music. Rachel Grimes latest release, Marion County 1938 is this kind of music. Chamber music isn't exactly the first thing to jump to the front of the line when you think of styles of indie music, but yet, here it is. As a member of 90's chamber ensemble [...]

You've likely noticed that I'm keen on starting the work weeks with something unique and uplifting. We don't often get Hindi folk submissions, and while at first the distinct sound can be a bit off putting, I think you'll grow to love it like I have. Maggie82s complex arrangements and excitable, orchestral instrumentation will surely put them on the fast track to success. When I can tell from recorded songs that I would love a band's live show, they must be in pretty good shape. Check out a couple tracks off their recently released This Charming Lady [...]

Photo by John Vettese For this month's Key Studio Video Session, we profiled Pink Skull , the Philladelphia indie-dance quintet that, last year, released its third album, Psychic Welfare , on RVNG Int'l Records. In our video, band leaders Julian Grefe and J.G. Geller talk about bridging the divide between hooky pop songs and expansive disco epics, the growth of the electronica scene in Philadelphia, and the origins of their "music for record-store nerds." Watch the video below and download their performance from December's Key Studio Sessions Live concert at Johnny Brenda's. [...]

For those of us who had work (or school) off due to Martin Luther King Jr. day, I've got a band that will surely give us a jump start to our real week. This Toronto trio knows how to have fun with their music, and, better yet, knows how to show the listener that this is the case. 3XG , their debut EP released free in December, is full of bouncy pop, sheets of synthesizer for a little r&b flavor, and an unwavering youthful jubilance. The colors you see in the photo [...]
This week in our second artist profile (click here for our first), we'll be looking at Tim Tsui from Hong Kong. One of the finest pioneers in Urban Vinyl Art, he is one of the greatest figure artists and illustrators from Hong Kong. Tsui's groundbreaking style has earned him worldwide praise, including the unique application of gemstones in his designs (which you can see by the third image). We love his style and we're anxious to add his amazing work to our collection. Like him on Facebook for updates [...]
Our friend Ian Anderson is up to new things and we'd be remiss if we didn't discuss 'em. One For The Team is no longer, but he certainly hasn't stopped making peppy poppy music. Anderson's latest project is Dream Brother, and the first two released songs feature special guests Paul Sprangers (Free Energy frontman) and indie-veteran John Vanderslice. Catchy yet understated, Dream Brother shows plenty of promise and serves to ensure that Anderson's musical prowess won't be leaving our ears any time soon. Dream Brother - "Haunted Heart (feat. Paul Sprangers)" [MP3] [...]

Bogan Via is a duo out of Phoenix that makes my heart go aflutter. Madeleine Miller's sweet falsetto is sweetly contrasted with Bret Bender's raspy baritone. Their songs heavily rely on the duo's vocals, but their angelic instrumentation also makes me swoon. Also, these words from Bender make it that much sweeter: About four months ago I saw a video of Madeleine singing an original song, emailed her to see if she'd like to meet up for a little jam out, and things have been gangbusters ever since. Gotta [...]

It seems like ages since any one heard from The Shins. It's going on five years since their last album but word is that a new one is on the way in March on Columbia Records. So what have they been doing? Well, it seems Dave Hernandez has been working on getting back to his Scared of Chaka roots with his new band Little Cuts . The band's first release is the 3-song Plastic Disasters 7", brought to us by the fine folks at Dirtnap Records . The title track opens the 7" and it kind [...]

Brae is Brandon Husken, who's been in the music scene for 22 years but has recently rediscovered himself as a singer/songwriter. His forthcoming album, Another Time and Place , marks his third full length as Brae, but it's his first real effort into getting the word out there about the project. Husken is a multi-instrumentalist, specializing as a drummer, though he employs eight of his friends on the album to help with varied instrumentation. Another Time and Place , out January 27, is probably best suited for the turn of winter to spring, as it [...]

One of my New Year's resolutions was to be more open with my music taste, as I was pushing away certain bands because of their descriptions not "fitting my aesthetic." What the hell does that even mean?? Who am I? Certainly not important enough to be thinking like that. I'M SO SORRY. To correct my ill-advised former decisions, I'm listening to more than ever. Electro, R&B, Funk, you name it. Do I like most of it? Nope. But I've certainly found a few gems so far. Leonard Friend, aka Alex Feder, formerly of Brooklyn's the XYZ Affair, fits [...]
