My Office

My Office Superman needs his Fortress of Solitude and Batman has the Bat Cave. We all need a favorite space to relax, reflect, write, read a book, watch a movie or showcase a favorite collectible or souvenir. Perhaps it’s a game room, library or secret room hidden by a moveable bookcase that leads to a man cave. I’ve always been curious what curios J.J. Abrams keeps close by, what books fill Stephen King’s shelves, what collectibles does Patton Oswald possess, what artwork lines Jim Lee’s walls, how many toys fill John Lasseter’s Pixar office and what movie memorabilia [...]

ART: KRISTEN SCHIELE

ART: KRISTEN SCHIELE For Kristen Schiele , presentation is definitely part of the package when she takes to creating something that's never been put together before. Not one to settle with a paintbrush and paper, she's adept in both arranging images, colors, shapes and ideas into intricate shadowboxes that give a brief glimpse into stories that beg to be told but are only hinted at, as well as composing nearly to scale installations that leave the viewer no choice but to be taken to the place she intends them to be. Her paintings dazzle as well; being mostly deconstructed versions [...]

NOT A KID ANYMORE - Catching up with Los Angeles based filmmaker Jason Madison

NOT A KID ANYMORE - Catching up with Los Angeles based filmmaker Jason Madison Fresh off of the debut screening of his latest film I'm Not A Kid Anymore , we find Jason Madison between projects. Planning more screening events while continuing to develop ideas, Jason's years spent in his beloved city of Los Angeles have provided him with more than enough inspiration for his visual works. Over the course of the last half decade, his knack for channeling the city's sun-drenched aesthetic has served him well, making him a go-to director for L.A. hip-hop mainstays like Dom Kennedy, Pac Div and Nipsey Hussle, whose lives and [...]

POSE COMES TO SOUTH AFRICA

POSE COMES TO SOUTH AFRICA American Graffiti Artist Pose recently spent some time down in South Africa, as part of the City Of Gold urban art festival. Pose is one of the few graffitti artists who has successful applied his art to a wide variety of mediums, he is probably most distinguished by his progressive lettering style. As the video above shows he's just super talented at what he does.

“FLOE” KINETIC GLASS SCULPTURE

FLOE
Click here to view the embedded video. Floe is a Kinetic Glass Sculpture that was created by four artists and designers from the Royal College of Art, London. The piece is inspired by formations and movement found in nature. Floe, embodies the shape and movement of ice drifting on the surface of the North Atlantic. The glass structure is combined with a simple wave movement and light bringing life to the piece. An interactive element was essential to the project; the audience influences the movement and light intensity with their presence. For more info [...]

Dean Blunt – “Papi”

As one half of the group formerly known as Hype Williams, a duo which now goes under the more self-explanatory title Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland, Dean Blunt has specialized in obtuse, abstract electronic pop, though I use the term "pop" this loosely. With the idea of pop tends to come a relateable sort of accessibility with the potential for wide appeal, but it was this fundamental characteristic which Dean and Inga seemed determined to obscure. On last year's Black is Beautiful , the pair buried their humanness under a lo-fi haze of synth-based instrumentals. Dean Blunt is not [...]

ART: JOHN BREED’S RAINBOW OF SHOES & LEGS

Whimsy, color and spatial harmony all collide in John Breed's A Rainbow of Shoes and Legs for Brueninger . The Brueninger in question is the German shoe salon the installation was intended for, and it's no wonder, for the bold simplicity of an array of multi-colored shoe clad gams lends itself well to a fashion driven environment. Among the 145 individual legs featured, there is a pale blue strappy sandal, a lime green spiked heel with ruffle embellishments and a lilac wedge. One can almost hear the strains of the Rolling Stones "She's A Rainbow" playfully caressing [...]

EVOL’S “URBAN CITY”

EVOL’S “URBAN CITY” Just outside of Hamburg, Germany in an unsuspecting field exists an underground city created by German artist EVOL .  Over the course of eight work-heavy days, EVOL and his crew excavated an “X” shaped area of the soil, and proceeded to insert on all inside walls facades resembling skyscrapers.  The effects are an interesting contrast to the normal dynamic created by the interaction of man-made structures with nature and, upon exiting, an immediate remedy for the brown and gray monotony of the big city. [...]
