I've been highlighting a new local artist of the week for about four months now and I thought it would be a good idea to put together a recap of who has all been spotlighted thus far. The list below includes a stream of an album or EP from each artist. Looking back on it, that's an impressive lineup of artists to come out of one city. The best part of it all is that most of these artists are still considered up and comers. The Princes, Atmospheres, Replacements of the world haven't even been talked about. Talk about job [...]

How timely... Our current local artist of the week, Asker , released this acoustic tune less that 24 hours ago and couldn't wait to share it with the masses. It's a nice one to close your eyes to and just unwind. Check it out below and let us know what you think. You can check out my previous featured post on the band HERE . The hot bed for fresh new music, better known as Minneapolis, seems to be spitting out talented new artists on the daily. I only discovered Asker a few days ago but from what I've heard so far, it's warranted them the artist of the week spotlight. Formed by three University of Saint Thomas students in mid-2011, they've so far released a demo and an EP. The Escape Room EP brought a smile to my face as I could hear hints of Remy Zero and Phantom Planet as well as Elbow [...]

Artist: Asker Album: The Escape Room EP Asker recorded their latest EP, The Escape Room, at Dave Elkins’ (of Mae) Nashville based studio Schematic. They have said to be influenced by Mutemath and the National (among others). When first listening to The Escape Room, the National influence was obvious. In fact, maybe a little too obvious. Much like The National, Asker’s lyrics are very repetitive. However, unlike their inspiration, Asker’s lyrics are pretty decent. The lyrics are memorable and comprehensible. For example, [...]

Tweet "A fashion has come back. Fixed in new version - and here to stay. Imagine Leonard Cohen , Elliott Smith and Bob Dylan . Remove 51% old man, two strings and add a new millennium." Can you imagine it? Me neither. Never let it be said that I don't give PR emails the benefit of the doubt, though, because I went ahead and listened to Jonas Asker anyway, and I'm glad I did. Jonas has a beautiful voice [closer [...]

"Think about Leonard Cohen, Elliot Smith and Bob Dylan. Take away 51 percent caducity, two strings and add a new millenium". That's how Jonas Asker is described in a mail I received, and yes, I can certainly hear in the music where his roots are. The question is if he has the voice to stand out and touch someone in a crowded genre such as singer/songwriter? And I really think he has. The somewhat draggy, bright, young voice cares for the words and paints beautiful emotions in the song "This Day". If [...]
Jonas Asker - Stockholm-based singer/songwriter crafts contemplative folk/pop melodies with smarts and a big heart...a start in a reggae band yields to more mellow, acoustic fare, a la fellow Swedes Jose Gonzales and the Tallest Man on Earth (aka Kristian Matsson) // Release : Online tracks for now -- full length debut 2011 TBA // Sounds like : well, stuff we like...Asker picked up up his father's guitar -- four strings strong -- and never looked back...it's early to tell what the young songwriter will achieve, but his online EP is nonetheless a [...]
