If your French is better than mine, you might understand the words that Stéphane Lafleur is singing. But il ne faut pas que vous parler français to understand what’s going on in Astronomie, the fourth full-length release by Lafleur’s Montreal brush-folk group Avec pas d’casque. The group take their name (literally, With No Helmet) from [...]
Do you have an hour and a half to spare this weekend? If so, just bookmark this and come back when you have the time. National Geographic and Jack Donaghy presents the first accurate non-stop voyage from Earth to the edge of the Universe using a single, unbroken shot through the use of spectacular CGI and images taken from the Hubble telescope. While the temptation would be to feel small and insignifcant after watching something like this, my takeaway is similar to Neil DeGrasse Tyson's - we're special because we're made of stardust .
From Jason Kottke : "Venus passed in front of the Sun yesterday for the last time until 2117. The transit took almost seven hours but this NASA video shows it in under a minute." To which, I add the more eloquent, "daaaaamn."
Yes it is. It's just technically a dwarf planet according to the IAU, which down-graded the celestial object in 2006. Internet explainer C.G.P. Grey offers an explanation for those still upset with the change. The long and short of it, at least according to a Harvard astrophysicist I once met and who voted to keep Pluto a planet, is that if Pluto didn't get downgraded, it would be planetary anarchy. Instead of nine planets in the solar system, there would be thousands of planets to learn and so, it was easier for astronomers to down-grade Pluto than [...]
The best place to see the eclipse was across Asia and parts of the western United States, which means on the east coast we were shit out of luck for the first annular solar eclipse visible in North America in nearly 18 years. Luckily, Buzzfeed has a great collection of photos . Fortunately, photographer Cory Poole made the video above of the annular solar ecplise yesterday using 700 photographs taken from his telescope. Read More: Wired has a lot of scientific information about the eclipse .

Crater Lake in Oregon is one of the few natural wonders I've seen that made my head explode from its inexplicable beauty and majestic tranquility - the other was the Grand Canyon, natch. Things like Crater Lake shouldn't exist. They just shouldn't because they an incomprehensible. They exist outside of what my rational human brain is capable of understanding. Anyway, photographer Brad Goldpaint caught a meteor shooting past Crater Lake at night in mid-April and the photo is quite remarkable in its own right. [via APOD , of course] Somewhat Related: [...]
NASA has released a new solar system atlas , composed of more than 18,000 individual images, of more than 560 million stars, galaxies and asteroids - many never even seen before. The atlas images were taken by the Wide-field Survey Explorer (WISE), NASA’s infrared space telescope. A quick guide to WISE’s all-sky archive is available online . Above is a photo of the known sky, with the Milky Way galaxy running horizontally across the map in blue. Related: Neil DeGrasse Tyson shares the most astounding fact .

It took recording a covers album for Nada Surf to get their mojo back. Or, should we say, that is at least what When I Was Young - a teaser of their upcoming seventh album - can proudly boast. After 20082s stodgy Lucky you felt that the group needed something, anything, to relight their creative fire. Bizarrely, recording other peoples songs did just that in the form of the brilliant if i had a hifi , their 2010 covers album. And now, almost four years on since releasing anything of their own, [...]
