Review // Farewell J.R ~ Health [EP]

Review // Farewell J.R ~ Health [EP] Words by Tom Johnson Farewell JR might be the collective name for the musical musings of Nick Rayner but there is very little of the classic 'singer-songwriter' about Health, his debut EP. Full-bodied arrangements are present throughout the twenty-five minutes, giving the record a dense and rich backdrop for his folk-styled vocals to sit upon. As vocals go, Rayner's are a rather wonderful tool. Sounding something like a 3am drunken plea to the moon, his gravelly drawl proves to be the records heartbeat as it clambers almost clumsily over the rest of the instrumentation. [...]

Loitering With Intent: Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun

Loitering With Intent: Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun © 2012 Greenland Photography Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun have been riding a wave of success since the release of sophomore album 'Death' in April and that's only set to continue into the near future. With two headline tours in support of the album under their belt and a forthcoming stint on the road with Tim Barry and, label mate, Frank Turner to look forward to in November, things are only getting better for the folk-rock outfit from Cheltenham. I met up with Jim and Chris before their show in Manchester for a [...]

The Interview: Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun

The Interview: Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun With their sophomore album 'Death' seeing them soar to new heights, I can't see it being very long until Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun are the band that everyone is talking about. The four-piece folk-rock band from Cheltenham are enjoying their fair share of success right now and that only looks to increase as they head out on tour alongside Tim Barry in support of, Xtra Mile label mate, Frank Turner. I sat down with Jim and Chris to talk about 'Death', the forthcoming tour, re-issuing 'Atlases' and how Xtra Mile should really be giving me some [...]

We're now very pleased to bring you the second part of our session which features this brilliant and funky-as-hell version of Winter, also taken from the new record ,   in all its finger-tapping glory. If you missed the first part of the session then check it out below but first [...]

GoldFlakeSessions // Maps & Atlases

GoldFlakeSessions // Maps & Atlases This week sees the release of Beware and Be Grateful , the new LP from Chicago quartet Maps & Atlases. The record marks a subtle shift in their sound, with the always-compelling band adding a good chunk of heart and soul into proceedings creating a record that manages to be intriguing, instantly danceable and rather damn beautiful all at the same time. We've loved the band since their (completely perfect) early EP's, so it was something of an honour to be able to film a session with them as they landed upon UK [...]

Album Review // Maps & Atlases – Beware and Be Grateful

Album Review // Maps & Atlases – Beware and Be Grateful Artist : Maps & Atlases Title : Beware and Be Grateful Label : FatCat Release Date : April 16th BUY IT Written by Mark Robinson It’s amazing how some bands get to reach a certain ‘level’ of mainstream acceptance, while others seem to toil around in the hazy area underneath. Regardless of how good they are, [...]

Maps & Atlases – Fever

Maps & Atlases – Fever Maps & Atlases last album, Perch Patchwork , saw the Chicago quartet embrace their once-dormant pop sensibilities. Long touted for their mathematically-intricate musicianship, tracks like "Solid Ground" and "Israeli Caves" saw the band blend angular guitar and drum beats with gorgeous melodies. Today the Barsuk signees released "Fever," the first taste of their upcoming record, Beware & Be Grateful . The track continues down the same path as  Perch Patchwork , replacing impressive bouts of finger-tapping with bright synths and a bouncy drumbeat. [...]

WATCH: New Maps & Atlases video welcomes Rick Reebok into the world

Chicago indie rockers Maps & Atlases have released a brand new video for the quite funky track, "Living Decorations," off their latest, Perch Patchwork . The video is a tongue-in-cheek affair that follows the set up and execution of a concert for an intriguing entertainer called Rick Reebok. Along the way, we see the punky nay-sayers, the band chilling backstage and finally the Reebok on stage, where he seems to bond in particular with one front row fan, played by Maps & Atlases lead singer Dave Davison. Be sure to catch Maps & Atlases at Lincoln [...]

[UK Exclusive] Maps & Atlases: ‘Living Decoration’

Maps & Atlases "Living Decorations"
Psychedelic pop rhythms and math-rock inspired percussion form the subtly infectious hooks of Chicago’s Maps & Atlases ’ ‘Living Decoration.’ Opening with smooth guitar twangs and unique staccato vocals, the upbeat number is a compelling off-kilter indie anthem. Taken from last years Perch Patchwork EP, the track’s brand new video revolves around a choreographed dance moves and the musical stage performance of fictitious singer ‘Rick Reebok.’ Related posts Maps & Atlases - Perch Patchwork Maps & Atlases sign [...]

Gig Review - Maps & Atlases @ Newcastle Other Rooms, 29/1/11

Gig Review - Maps & Atlases @ Newcastle Other Rooms, 29/1/11 After releasing their long-awaited debut album Perch Patchwork last year, following two extremely impressive EPs, Chicago-based math-rockers Maps & Atlases brought their pleasant mix of early Foals-esque rhythms with the indie-pop stylings of Vampire Weekend to Newcastle’s Other Rooms. Having two local acts as support was a nice touch, with the brilliantly named Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink up first. Their music showed signs of promise, sadly buried under inconsistent melodies and the sullen look of a thoroughly unimpressed bassist. Coal Train started strongly, though their final songs descended into disappointingly predictable mid-tempo fare, and so when Maps & Atlases [...]
