I got to hang out with Jonny Fritz in his red Dodge Sprinter outside the Record Bar here in Kansas City after opening for The Makes Three on April 30th. He was beaten and worn out by the current tour – but we kicked back a couple cold Coca-Cola's and he was kind enough to talk with me about what's going on in his world. YC: You guys played on KC Live (The local news' morning show, hosts musicians, comedians, notable Kansas Citians etc.) this morning how was that? [...]

While I have never really been able to get into the HBO show True Blood , their latest soundtrack for the series is something to get behind. Scheduled for release on May 28th via ATO Records , it features the likes of My Morning Jacket, Deep Valley, The Flaming Lips, and Warpaint to name a few. Additionally, everyone's favorite down home mamajamas Alabama Shakes are contributing a new one titled "Pocket Change." It is a simple little throwback ditty that would be perfect to throw on for your next [...]

J Roddy Walston And The Business are a quartet hailing from Baltimore, MD. Check out their song "Don't Break The Needle" off their 2010 telf-titled album while we wait for their upcoming album set to release later this summer off of ATO Records (whom boast an impressive roster of Alabama Shakes, My Morning Jacket, Old Crow Medicine Show, and many more). You can also see them live on May 31st when they open up for The Lumineers along with Cold War Kids at the Target Center.

My obsession with ATO Records and their artists continues with Jonny Fritz . Previously unknown to me before this video premiere, he's quickly become a fixture on my iTunes rotation. His video for "Goodbye Summer" is the first off of his recently released album Dad Country which grabbed a spot on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart in it's debut week. Give this goofy video a looksy below.
In the last decade Soja has really made their mark in the U.S. reggae scene. The band is always, what it seems like, on tour at some point and continues to dominate the iTunes reggae charts. Their latest Supa Dups-produced single, features vocals from Jacob Hemphill with some guided help from Collie Buddz. The track will officially drop at all online retailers April 30th, but you can stream the full song below in the meantime. The post Soja - She Still Loves Me (ft. I'd heard Kopecky Family Band's "Heartbeat" before (in fact, I wrote about the video last November), but it wasn't until I heard all of Kids Raising Kids that I realized this was a band I was going to love for a good long while. "Heartbeat" is a standout track for sure, but the whole album [...]

Nashville buzz-band Kopecky Family Band (KFB) just re-released their playfully exuberant eleven-track debut disc, Kids Raising Kids , via ATO Records. The new disc mixes foot-stomping orchestral pop with vocal harmonies and ringing guitars that sound straight from the 60’s Laurel Canyon scene. While the band’s music will strike a familiar chord with fans of music collectives like Broken Social Scene and The Polyphonic Spree, KFB seems more willing to reach beyond the boundaries of the genre than some of their contemporaries and frequently utilize the ‘exploding’ verse-chorus-verse alt-rock song structure that become popular in the [...]

Jonny Fritz's Dad Country isn't far off from it's release date, April 16th - and now the first single from the album is available. The plain language lyrics of "Goodbye Summer" make it almost hilarious in parts, without giving up anything that keeps it from being a great country song. I've given Dad Country a couple of spins at this point, and the album is an incredible piece of music that pays tribute to the sounds of old country in a great way - and Dawes weaves their instrumentation skills throughout the record. It's great, look for [...]

Record Store Day may yet be three weeks away, but you'll find a ton of great new music at your favorite record shop today, including the latest from The Black Angels . KEXP listeners have long been fans of this Austin band, and in fact we even had them perform in-studio before the release of their very first album back in 2006 (they even sent us a lovely cow skull as a thank you, and it still hangs inside our front door!). Now, seven years later, The Black Angels return with their fourth LP, Indigo [...]

It's shaping up to be another stellar year for album-length coverage, with pickings so strong we're hard pressed to take them all on in a single feature without burying the lead. Indeed, in the few short months since the year turned, we've already featured close exploration of Anais Mitchell and Jefferson Hamer's Child Ballads EP, touted Levi Weaver's free-to-fans covers EP as a "darling indie set" well worth your time, and helped Slowcoustic's double-length tribute to J. Tillman's Long May You Run take flight. But the hits just keep on coming, and we're [...]

We are pleased to present the debut single from Jonny Fritz's debut with ATO Records, Dad Country. It took me awhile to warm up to Jonny but I became enamored with Down on the Bikini Line last year and haven't looked back. Goodbye Summer was recorded in LA at Jackson Browne's studio and features all the members of Dawes. It's about life on the road with Jonny and the band, mainly the unglamorous moments like "can we swing by the CVS, I left my contact solution at home" and a would-be older "lover with a wedding ring." [...]
