Marine Dreams is the solo moniker of Attack in Black 's Ian Kehoe. Just yesterday (November 15), he released his self-titled LP through You've Changed Records . Go to Exclaim! to read more about it. The drums on album cut "Fold the Sky" sound like they're being playing by a real drummer, but the verse beat is so hypnotically repetitive that it could easily be replaced with an electronic beat. The arrangement loosens up as it goes along, and the result is a scrappy power pop song with [...]

Whether it's as 1/4 of Attack In Black, 1/3 of Daniel, Fred & Julie, or in his newest solo incarnation, Daniel Romano has undoubtedly become the music man to watch in 2010. Romano has announced the June 1 release of his solo record, Workin' For The Music Man , the most intimate set of songs he's written, and perhaps his greatest musical achievement to date. The album was recorded in his fully functional 2″ 16 track basement studio. It features performances by his father, David, his aunt, Darlene, Misha Bower of Bruce Peninsula [...]
Attack In Black's Daniel Romano has announced the release of his first solo album. Workin' for the Music Man will be released June 1st. Take a listen to the track "A Losing Song" now. Here's the track list for the album: Workin' For The Music Man Missing Wind A Losing Song On the Night So Free She Was the World to Me Poor Girls of Ontario Your Hands My Greatest Mistake Joseph Arthur Workin'

Last year's list of favourite albums was daunting to write. At the time I said that all the albums in contention were taunting me, as if they were saying "I dare you to love me," but this year it's more like they're chanting "I dare you to hate me," forcing me to choose between an incredible collection of records that I've championed over the course of the year. Worse yet, I've decided that 20 is just to broad a number, and have limited myself to 10 selections. Getting it down to 20 was easy, but the final list of 10 [...]

Norman Wong Even though he coined it himself, I often wonder if Joel Gibb regrets encouraging the use of "gay church folk music" as a description for the music of The Hidden Cameras . Certainly they got a lot of mileage out of it in the band's earlier days, as it was both attention grabbing and accurate, but now, four albums in, it probably deserves to be retired. It's not that it's no longer descriptive - Gibb is still gay (one assumes), it's still music and it's still built on foundations of folk and church traditions [...]

Daniel Romano, Julie, Doiron, and Fred Squire: beautiful music Julie Doiron is someone I've never paid enough attention to in these here pages, but it's not for a lack of interest in her work. She is perhaps one of the great unsung heroes of the Canadian music scene: an indie pioneer as part of Eric's Trip, and a consummate collaborator with Mount Eerie and Wooden Stars (to name a few), and a respected and loved solo musician in her own right. Doiron has hit another one out of the park, this time by teaming up with [...]

Imagine a scenario where three of the best songwriters in the indie Canadian scene decide to make a record together. Not like a Monsters of Folk, but more haunting and pain filled like a Ghosts of Folk. Dan from Attack in Black showed up in New Brunswick, and presented Julie Doiron and Fred Squire ( Calm Down It's Monday , Shotgun & Jaybird ) an idea. The premise is so simple, but so amazing. Lets sit in a garage and bang out some arrangements of classic folk tracks from the 40s, throw in [...]

ARTIST: Attack In Black Answer The Question Of Years with free mp3 download for 'Liberties' from Years (by one thousand fingertips) by Attack In Black DATE: 10-27-09 WRITER: Bill Adams PHOTO: Matt Barnes There will always be ongoing debates among fans about how it came to be that a particular band reached one creative consensus or another that ultimately yielded a significant artistic change in style but, sometimes, it's much more simple than anyone would like to believe and, of that, Attack In Black is living [...]
This weekend, Kingston, Ontario will host the Wolfe Island Musicfest 2009, featuring Ohbijou, the Rural Alberta Advantage, Holy Fuck, Busdriver, and many more.

Don't we all wish we had been born on the bayou? I know I'd love to run shirtless through a wheat field in the summer time, ride bikes down the ol' dirt path, or as one of my favorite Americana bands, Canned Heat, would say "I'm going where the water tastes like wine, We can jump in the water, stay drunk all the time". The funny thing about Americana is, its not really that American is it? Some of the best bands in this genre where in fact, Canadian. The Band and Neil Young being some [...]

By midnight tomorrow night, I have to submit my top five albums from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009 to the good folks at running this year's Polaris Music Prize . When I was asked to participate as a juror for this year's award, I thought, "Hey, this'll be a snap!" What I didn't realize at the time was that my fingers wouldn't be doing the snapping, it would be my brain. Narrowing a list down to about 15 was easy, but culling the herd down to a mere five has proved to be [...]
I really really loved Attack In Black's last album, Marriage , and its warm and inviting rootsy post-hardcore and I was eager to hear more of it on the band's follow-up, but their newest album, Years (By One Thousand Fingertips) , is such a departure from that sound, that I wasn't even sure it was the same band at first. Despite being (again) full of roots-rock, Years is a much softer and folksier album than Marriage but is no less incredible. I actually found it almost comical (and awesome) that Julie [...]

Frank Yang There's a scene in the Danny Boyle film Sunshine (a fantastic movie, by the way) wherein the spaceship's psych officer is in the observation deck and asks the ship's computer to open up the shades blocking out most of the Sun's intensity, even though he knows that doing so would be almost instantly fatal (the computer refuses and he settles for the minimum safe amount, don't worry, no spoiler - it's the opening scene). The point being that same urge, the one that compels you to do what is [...]

Tonight's tune comes to us from the Hamilton, Ontario indie/alt-rock band Arkells . John Lennon can be found on the band's debut LP Jackson Square , released in October of 2008. Jackson Square was released by the independent Canadian label Dine Alone Records . Other notable Canadian acts on Dine Alone Records include Attack in Black , Bedouin Soundclash , and City and Colour . Head on the wall and my piss hardly makes the stall [...]

Sometimes bands surprise us, well, surprise us so much that we aren't even sure what to think. In Attack In Black 's case, I must say the surprise is pleasant. These young Welland, Ontario, punks have traded their angst and anger only to reveal their softer side in their second album Years , available as of March 10th via Dine Alone Records . Their sound has so much changed that it now falls under the pop-folk-rock genres. Full of fun, Years really shows [...]

"If your songs weren't written, would I still get shivers from the silence...?" I still listen to Marriage on the bus, in the car, while walking to class - anytime will do. Canadian punks Attack In Black have since changed their tune. Dramatically. Perhaps they've grown up a bit? My tastes aren't oh-so-sensitive, but for those of you who can't say the same - you'll enjoy the band's seeming trip into adulthood. Years (By One Thousand Fingertips) is a generous [...]

I first discovered Welland, Ontario foursome Attack in Black three years ago as the opening band for Canadian screamo band, Alexisonfire. At the time, they were lively, loud, and entertaining, but lacked that special something that makes a band memorable: that "it" factor. With stage presence that was less than remarkable, future success did not seem likely for the Canadian band. Then in 2007, they released their debut full-length album, "Marriage", and I was sold; in fact, I was mesmerized. A mix of upbeat rock songs and mellow tunes perfect for a rainy day at home, "Marriage" was everything a [...]

Attack in Black - Leaving Your Death in a Flowerbed I can't tell if I'm drawn to this song because it reminds me of an Olivia Tremor Control track or whether this four-piece from Welland, Ontario have cracked a similar understated genius with their fourth album, Years (by One Thousand Fingertips) , which came out this week on Dine Alone Records. I think it's safe to say the band have been a little overlooked until now but maybe their stint at SXSW next week will provide up their profile somewhat. [...]
