If the geographical location that the band call home and the music that they generate is a perfect fit, does it enhance your experience when listening to them? Perhaps it's just our stereotyping of people from cities and countries that clouds our view, but would The Beatles have been the same if they'd come from Southampton, instead of that well-known northern city of chipper, fast and loose Scousers? Would Radiohead seem the same if they were associated with Birmingham, instead of the quaint and intellectual city of Oxford? Does the home of the band influence the music? With today's new [...]

Ryan Karazija - Low Roar To some, it's unfair - even blasphemy - to compare anyone's vocals to those of Thom Yorke. Back in 2008, multiple critics were doing just that when describing Audrye Sessions' frontman Ryan Karazija's singing style. When I interviewed him in 2008, he had this to say about the comparisons: "I think about that a lot. And I don't know what I think because it's fucking Thom Yorke. That's great. Cool. He's fucking amazing. But there's also a thing that stresses me out about it. [...]

Photo by yesterdayjuice Seeing a show headlined by a band called Fun. leads you to go into it with a certain set of expectations - primarily that there's going to be some dancing. While dancing certainly did occur, I can vouch for that, it only started at the end of the night, when the most fun band of the evening took the stage. Before that happened, the bill was filled with two wildly different Bay Area bands that led to an enjoyable, if not disjointed show. I [...]

The ability for a particular song to catch in the mind requires an unexplainable, undeniable quality. In the case of Oakland, California's Audrye Sessions, the catch is an intelligent one and the music, spontaneous. Their debut LP demonstrates the influences of producers Andrew Scheps (Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Matt Radosevich (30 Seconds to Mars, The Hives). These influences are that of perfection and balance. Although those qualities bring versatility to the music, it may sound "too polished" for some listeners. The album's opening tracks "Turn Me Off" and "Perfect, Sometimes" exude the band's energy. Lead singer [...]

You know, giving out CDs in contests is pretty fun. I bet giving out two at the same time is even better. Let's try it out, eh? Our guinea pig for this experiment is Californian indie rock band Audrye Sessions . Audrye Sessions first released their self-titled EP back in October of 2008 through Black Seal Music . It wasn't until February of this year that the band's full length album was made available, conveniently also self-titled. This is your chance to own [...]

( Editor's Note: I'm sure that you're aware by this point that Kevin and I are on summer vacation. Summer is often a weird time for me, in that I have way less stuff to do and, consequently, way more free time. On Wednesday, I overslept, sent off some e-mails, took a nap, read for an hour or two (Winter's Tale - Mark Helprin, get it if you haven't) and, in general, was a total waste of space. Didn't really do anything productive. This seems to have the effect of dulling my ability to interact successfully with the outside world. [...]

Meet the Oakland quartet Audrye Sessions. Their self-titled debut on Black Seal (released earlier this year) is packed with polished, propulsive rock songs & gentle, stripped-down tunes with the kind of ear-grabbing melodies that instantly hard-wire themselves into your brain. Recorded with Andrew Scheps (U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash) & Matt Radosevich (The Hives, Taking Back Sunday), the album is anchored by Ryan Karazija's remarkable voice, which is whisper vulnerable one minute, roiling with emotion the next and easily slips into a smooth falsetto. Audrye Sessions arrived when bassist Alicia Marie Campbell met Karazija, who was [...]

I'm not sure what it is about female bass players that I find so alluring, but, it is definitely a bug I have and can't seem to shake. It's happened before with Stellastarr* and Silversun Pickups... and it's happened again with Audrye Sessions . Their music runs along the lines of the Aussie band Youth Group, whom it seems the opening guitar was cribbed, and a little bit of a harder edged Toad The Wet Sprocket. Good music that is only "alternative" because it's indie and not because of [...]
