Austin, Texas has dubbed itself the live music capital of the world for the good reason they have more live music venues than anywhere else. SXSW festival takes place in March of each year, and in early autumn, the massive Austin City Limits (ACL) festival takes place in the central Texan city. And for the past five years, a newer, smaller festival has emerged. Fun Fun Fun Fest took place this year in early November, the start of winter in Ireland but still, shorts and t-shirt weather in Texas. Day One The festival happens [...]

Austin's three-day festival fills the gap between SXSW and Austin City Limits with a multi-staged lineup featuring Girls, Heartless Bastards, Mates of State, some wrestling, Black Lips, Architecture in Helsinki, Passion Pit and Ryan Gosling? by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer It's hard to go to a B-52's concert and not have fun, and tonight's gig at Stubb's was no exception. For a band that that is celebrating their 35th anniversary, they sound and look great, even if Fred isn't quite the dancer he was way back when they were just a "college" band out of Athens and I was a high school student hanging out Raul's and Club Foot. It's hard to see the band and not reminisce over their long career arc. I still miss Ricky Wilson's [...]

We like to have this cute little fantasy of OFF! 's Keith Morris being a reformed man. Tired of the basement-punk routine, lightened up right along with his kicked drug addictions, and mellowing into a cheerful, optimistic elder statesman. It helps that he's always wearing a No Age shirt. This is not exactly the case – as good as that storybook saga feels, Morris is still very much a jerk. Tied-down dreadlocks, screwed-up scowls, a stage-demeanor that's both hunchback and gargoyle – he crawled to the stage looking tired as hell. Tired [...]

Monday was a busy night for us kids over here at ATH, with several shows on our agenda. We started out with a sweet little treat, which turned out to be not so sweet at all. Head past for notes and pics from the St. Vincent show at ACL Live... Cate Le Bon is a Welsh singer, and I'm sure the homeland plays a huge role, at least lyrically speaking. She started off with some technical difficulties, but once she got [...]
Edgar Allen Poe died broke and mad?his creative genius never realized until after his death. It seems Kyuss? influence wasn?t felt until after its demise. Fortunately for the group, these desert rockers didn?t have to literally die to make an impact. Sixteen years after disbanding, Kyuss has returned and judging by the massive gathering inside Stub... by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer L.A. based Weird Al Yankovic brought banjos and accordions to the ACL Live stage last night, making up for a missed appearance at last years Fun Fun Fun Fest. The audience was full of kids of all ages, regardless of actual age, and included long time Austin guitarist Eric Johnson, who watched on while Weird Al wheeled and reeled through a succession of his MTV hits at a frenetic pace. Weird Al's current tour winds its way through the south, then up the east coast [...]

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer Erasure. the English synthpop duo, consisting of songwriter and keyboardist Vince Clarke and singer Andy Bell, made a long- long awaited, anticipated, and overdue, return to Austin, playing to a sold out audience at ACL Live at the Moody Theater on an elaborate stage that included gargoyles and steel cages. Erasure's U.S. tour began in August in Tampa and will finish in Seattle on October 6 before heading back to start a European tour in November. Click here for more pics of Erasure [...]

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Photographer I don't usually cover D.J.s but deadmau5 isn't really your ordinary D.J. and his shows are more than just a rave or dance party . His stop last night at the Austin Music Hall was no exception. With a light show that would make Pink Floyd envious, a list of guest D.J.s that included Motley Crues Tommy Lee, and a walk on vocal performance by Sofi the show was more like a full blown concert event than a rave. deadmaus5 is partying again tonight at the Music [...]

Words by Jim It's happened before. We feature a band, we get to know them, we get to be pals, and then they feel comfortable recommending some music to us. It's a really nice benefit of this whole deal and I really love when it happens (if we like the music). It's much better than the pesky PR emails we get slammed with everyday and when the music is awesome, it makes our lives easier. Nice! It worked out great with Strand of Oaks and Juniper Tar , so let's try [...]

by jeff barringer - staff writer & photographer Weezers infectious brand of pop mixed with an alternative edge has stood them well over the years, building them a huge following of devoted fans, who all seemed to turn out for both nights to fill Austin's Stubb's BarBQ to max capacity and then some, for the bands' way sold out 2 night stop in Austin. Despite temperatures well over 100 in the tightly packed crowd, fans and band alike appeared to be having a blast, and by the second night Weezer had really [...]
