Photo via Morrissey's Facebook page Iconic British rockstar Morrissey performed at the Bass Concert Hall in Austin, TX. Opening for Morrissey was alternative rock songstress Kristeen Young. Young is indescribable: her music relies solely on the piano as she bashes away on chords that produce a delightfully cacophonous sound. Unrelenting and abrasive Young becomes possessed by a musical apparition during her live performances, her voice distinctive and powerful, accompanied by thumping piano keys and electronic sounds. To question Morrissey's impact and influence on English pop and rock music would be a foolish mistake. From [...]

Green Day will be performing a surprise show at Red 7 in Austin, TX tonight. Much speculation took place after Green Day frontman, Billie Joe Armstrong tweeted, "Green Day show this Thursday! Hint, it's not in California or New York…" The show follows up a surprise show they performed in San Francisco for the Surfrider Foundation benefit a couple of weeks ago. Their recent gigs have featured the band's new material, which has supposedly not been recorded yet as their follow-up to 2009's 21st Century Breakdown. Tickets for the show at Red 7 [...]

Formed in 2004, in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia, American indie rock band Manchester Orchestra have released three albums to date. Their most recent release, Simple Math, was recorded at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, TN and released in May of 2011. They have now embarked on a huge headlining tour to support the album before taking a break to work on some side projects once the tour comes to a close. Manchester Orchestra has appeared four times on the Late Show with David Letterman in addition to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan, and Jimmy Kimmel Live!. [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars If you've lived in Austin for any amount of time and paid any attention at all, I think it is safe to say you ought have heard of Quiet Company . You may not have listened to their entire discography, but I'm sure the name rings some sort of bell. If you don't live in Austin, and haven't heard of this band before…get on it! Time is-a-wastin'. You already have three full-length studio albums to catch up on, and now you have another: [...]

Photo by Anna Webber There always seems to be a constant outflux of bands coming out of Austin, Texas. Sometimes it becomes difficult keeping track of just who is rising to the top of the totem pole in Austin, but diligently watching and anticipating a band's breakthrough moment, I usually am aware of groups that are noteworthy and worth your attention. One of these bands is the alternative, indie rock group The Soldier Thread . Full-fledged rock at its finest, The Soldier Thread combines the synthy, new wave sound of groups such as Metric, with [...]

It's been a while since Dntel has been a big deal. A decade ago Jimmy Tamborello was defining an aesthetic, the rock-solid Life is Full of Possibilities was an early example of indie's gradual coaxing into more danceable ground, and the chemistry between his beats and Ben Gibbard's feathery croon essentially created a subgenre that defined a decade's worth of crossover pop. A set at Emo's should be treated with utter infatuation, but unfortunately when you're consistently reclusive and wholly uninterested in releasing new music, even the mightiest powers can wane. For [...]
Doom metal pioneers St. Vitus returned to the state capital of Texas. Earlier in the year, the cult icons played SXSW as part of the ?Metal Alliance Tour? with Helmet, Crowbar and other masters of the down beat. Many of the group?s hardcore fans, however, were shunned by SXSW in lieu of badge and wristband holders. St. Vitus original and hippie pro... Read More/Discuss on Metal Underground.com

Brooklynvegan finally posted my photos of Old 97s set from his SXSW Friday Day showcase at Barbarella back in March. You can see the whole set here .

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Writer and Photographer Primus is back and in fine form with one of their early drummers and "gasp" new songs. Though frontman Les Claypool threatened that the new works would be heavily influenced by BOC's "Don't Fear The Reaper", nary a cowbell was to be heard Tuesday at their way sold out show at Stubb's, if you could get in. Even the scalpers were out of tickets for this one. Primus first full release since 1999, tentatively titled Green Naugahyde , [...]

You thought I ditched the rest of my SXSW coverage, didn't you? Or maybe you didn't even notice…or care for that matter; too bad, you're getting it. Part Two comin' at ya! I woke up early on Friday to indulge in the BMI Brunch at the Four Seasons, and check out The Civil Wars. Their name had been popping up all over the place, and then the one-and-only Taylor Swift pumped out lots of priceless online promotion through Twitter mentions and adding them to her published iTunes playlist. She even attended their show at [...]

Downtown Austin, TX, known as 'The Live Music Capital of the World' is the focal point of the new documentary Echotone . After watching House Hunters a few times, certain nuisances should be obvious home buying deterants: being close to a train track, near an airport, and in this case, close to a concert venue. These high rise property owners featured in the film sought after a downtown location without thoroughly thinking about the repercussions of living near an opened roof venue like Stubbs. As nearly two dozen high-rises pop up throughout the city, a new battle is in [...]

Sacramento your loss, Agent Ribbons has made their way to Texas and they might be here to stay. They're embarking on a tour through the West throughout the Spring and plan on bringing all of their spunk filled lyrically bombastic theatricality to a city near you! Typically running in minimalist two girl set, Natalie Gordon (vocals/guitar) and Lauren Hess (drums/accordion) crone out songs reminiscent of the Velvet Underground and with a heavy- hand from The Zombies. Don't get me wrong, there is something very raw and modern about the band, but with the same vocal fortitude as [...]

by Jeff Barringer - Staff Writer & Photographer "Lovely to see you again my friend..." I have a long history with the Moody Blues and so does my music collection. Starting with their "Caught Live +5" release in the 70s, a staple of mail order music clubs, I backtracked and ended up with most of their catalog from the 60's and early 70s. My first live experience with The Moody Blues was in 1981 at the Frank Erwin Center and I saw them there again in 1994. Compared to those shows, seeing them in 2011 at [...]
