The Great Dividing Range - The Lucksmiths I've discovered that sleeping on a plane is a very hard thing to do. Dozing as far i could sink and always being shook from it, i looked up to the flight progress monitor to see we were flying over this very mountain range and this song came into my head. It might have always been there. It summed up very neatly and somberly everything the procedure of checking in, customs, boarding, sitting down distracted and droned [...]

Father's day - Weddings Parties Anything I wish i could have broken up the Kpop with something better. The band who cause much short-lived excitement/long-lived disappointment when flicking through the "W" section in record stores, thinking i've stumbled upon something by another certain band whose name begins "Wedding". Ugh. So many times. I think my problem with this song and fathers in general stems from my own (in)experience. I'm sure it means a lot to many people, their lives drawn in its lyrics, [...]

Who the hell are you? - Madison Avenue Ugh. A-pop. Maybe not so much pop - more dance music. Regardless, it's crummy. And like all Australian pop/dance music it has aged horribly. I'd forgotten how terrible and put on the singer's voice is, especially when she reaches for some kind of soul sassiness. Who ever thought that was a good idea?
Hello - Potbelleez Well hasn't this been one crappy week. TV show themes, a song i didn't want to deal with, and a day i almost gave up. And now a song i only know through its use as a station ID for the digital channel GO!. Well great. It's nice channel 9 could find a cheap enough song featuring the lyric "GO!" to use constantly for station promos. Some entrepreneuring person should write a catchy, of-the-times song replete with "GO"s ready for when [...]

Building on my earlier post about the top ten international bands to check out at the upcoming Splendour in the Grass Festival (July 29-31), I now bring you the best of this year's homegrown contingent. Here are the top ten Australian acts that we're excited to see at the festival. Of course, Splendour in the Grass is held in Australia (and I'm a native Australian as well), so I'm kind of biased. But I hope this brings your attention to some of the great acts coming out of this country. [...]

I've done everything for you - Rick Springfield It seems so strange for a heartthrob to sing a song of spite, but that's the kind of heartthrob Rick Springfield was. Look out, girls! Maybe that should be the heartthrob Rick Springfield still is. The man is a vampire. 62 years old in August, and if he still looks anything like he did on The View those months ago he's throbbing many a heart still.
Aurora - The Cat's Miaow " The original version of "Aurora" first appeared on the "Weapons of happiness" cassette compilation which came with "The World of Suzie Wong" fanzine 1993. It also appeared on a couple of other releases before finally being compiled on the "A kiss and a cuddle" CD. In March 1993 the Cat's Miaow, using an assumed name, sent a cassette copy of "Aurora" to Summershine Records as a potential single. The song "Ferry no. 63 was included as a [...]

Down about it - Smudge Yeah, that's right - SMUDGE! It is a measure of some reassurance and vindication that most of the Lemonheads best songs were written by someone else - usually an Australian and usually Tom Morgan. The alternative Adonis figurehead that is Evan Dando can have all the swoons and Rolling Stone covers he wants. We know where the songs lie. We know where to find the better original versions. We know who gets to rake in the songwriting [...]

This perfect day - The Saints This perfect song. It all made sense to me - the Saints - through this song. (I'm) Stranded is great and all, but this to me is everything of the time bomb we've been told that first single was. It's everything the Saints have been praised for, with none of the affected snarl and privileged-kid-play-acting rock'n'roll i've found in their other work. There's something pure here. There's something essential, something the apotheosis of everything [...]

Scum Manor - Clag Australia's lost and forgotten pop history. It's more well known and revered overseas than it is here. There used to be bands like this here! There might still be, if i knew where to look. You would think, with how popular and accessible this music is nowdays, there to be something. But no. A continuation lost. Sure there are bands who claim to be, or are equated to be by writers/taggers, but i have yet to find something as exciting, [...]
Just when it seems indie pop has gone dull, along comes an act that sounds so fresh, so pristine that you catch the love bug all over again. The windswept, layered hooks of Melbourne six-piece Alpine gust over melodic guitar. Cool and upbeat, the group's debut EP Zurich is innocent in spirit, but mature in sound. Co-vocalists Louisa James and Phoebe Baker chase one another playfully, engaged in a game of hide-and-seek, ducking in and out of lush instrumental rhythms. Alpine's Zurich [...]

DJ Pogo reins from Down Under. He creates entirely original songs from clips and sound from popular movies. This, his latest song, "Upular" was made from various chords, bass notes and vocal samples from the the Pixar Film, Up . Thanks for WAWSTSF blog for the tip! DJ POGO - Upular [...]

Homebake is Australias premiere all-local festival, boasting an illustrious heritage cemented in the history books of the Australian music industry. What sets it aside from other festivals is its support of home-grown music and new talent, as well as its commitment to philanthropic causes. Photoclip of Homebake 2009, Sydney Australia 3 Top Recommendations from a local blogger. We agree these would be 3 of our must see's but then again, all of them would have [...]
