Dave Baxter of New Zealand's Avalanche City has put together a side project EP out today, for free! I watched Avalanche City play one night down in Austin during SXSW to a small bar crowd - they were charming, fun, and just a great folk show. I got to talking to some Kiwi's that were there at the bar for the show, the two in particular I hit it up with were University of Texas students, and their love for Avalanche City was easy seen in the ways the talked about them but also how they most [...]

THEY'VE DONE IT AGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAAAAAAIN. Denzal Park is doing big things. They began the process of doing it with their remix to Birdy's Skinny Love two weeks ago which I'll throw in here as well but now there's no other way to put it besides they have done too well. For some reason, my phone refused to let me subscribe to the Great Escape text service, and without adequate O2 coverage, I hadn't had a chance in hell to load the official festival app. In hindsight, either of these may have informed me that the entire Island Records showcase at the Loft featuring Lower Than Atlantis , King Charles (my main interest in this stage, after Tom's hilarious phone interview with the man ) and Tribes had been cancelled. But as I learned over this weekend, [...]

I'll admit, I started out with a bias against the crowd. A sold out show promoted by the radio station Live 105 meant, to me, one thing: the majority would be fans who'd heard fun.'s single on the radio (or on the super bowl commercial) and weren't at all interested in the band as a whole at all. At first, that bias seemed confirmed. The venue, which usually smells of that ol' indelible concert scent of spilled beer, lingering smoke and sweat, was heavy on a wide variation of college-y perfumes. There were gaggles of girls refilling their vodka-sodas at [...]

Got myself in a bit of a curry on Friday, a little bit jaded on Saturday, and bit of a day of indulgence today, it being Mothering Sunday and all that. It’s been a funny old week. Big Sair and I laughed our way around Southampton in an attempt to locate Laura Marling . Unfortunately, we managed to miss Timber Timbre in support as I realised I have met my match in the aerial spatial awareness and map reading stakes. Yep, we’re both shite. Still, Laura was marvellous, with full band in accompaniment, [...]

New Zealanders Avalanche City release "Love Love Love" in the UK early next year and it’s set to be a hit. After all, the track did debut at number one in their homeland. To begin with, this six-piece was the solo project of Dave Baxter, who recruited the others after his album, "Our New Life Above The Ground", was released back in March. Inspired by Texan Bryce Avery’s solo project "The Rocket Summer", he wrote and produced the entire album. Baxter’s done a pretty good job, even just going by this song. Read more..
Eleanor Houghton sits down with Avalanche City for a chat about music, farm animals, and love, love, love. A man who dreams of sailing the seas, writes love songs that rival those of the Beatles, and will go to borderline illegal lengths to get a bouquet for his wife sounds like a work of fiction, but Dave Baxter, aka Avalanche City is as real as they come. Dressed in a hat, a flannelette shirt, and an ear stretcher and beard combo that would put any hipster to shame, you [...]

Here are three more artists to check out this week: Avalanche City For those who like: I'm From Barcelona, Ben Lee Thanks to the use of the irresistibly catchy song "Love Love Love" in a promo for New Zealand's TV2, this indie pop band gave away 11,000 free downloads of their debut album. Avalanche City , the culmination of a year’s worth of isolation and musical study by Dave Baxter of Australia, is unstoppably infectious and beautiful. His debut album, Our New Life Above the Ground has everything from deep, dark piano chords to upbeat acoustic riffs and some of the most sincere vocals that I’ve come across in quite some time. With his first effort, Baxter has managed to capture the soul of folk music while incorporating the memorable melodies and drive of something found in a more mainstream pop genre. His most recent release, [...]

Here at MM we share, chat, argue, bury and praise music on a pretty regular basis…like daily. So throughout the year, the Mackerel crew (Mrs Mackerel, Barry-Sean, Christy-Popper, Dr Roddy, Polly Pocket, Starbar, MM and others) keep their own ever-changing top tens ready for publication at the climax of the festive season. So last, but very much not least, is the lovely (though flu-stricken) Mrs Mackerel and her choices for 2010. We all sweat a little over our top tens and I don’t know why really. This is just what I think, you will undoubtedly think [...]
