Misty Miller is a dusty voiced Londoner who has been making music since the age of eight. She recorded her first album at 15, releasing it in 2011. Earlier this year she released her debut EP Girlfriend . Her follow-up is the brand new single, "Anything For You", which is the first one from her new EP. "Anything For You" is steeped in the kind of electric blues and garage rock that burrows its way into your bones and makes you want to move. Makes you want to feel. Makes you want to stand in a packed bar with [...]
Somehow, some way, J-Fur and I have to figure out how to fit a baby in this cramped apartment. In recent weeks we've combed painstakingly through our possessions trying to figure out what needs to go and what can stay. One of the first things we attacked is our 95 book shelves. Memories ensued, followed closely behind by tantrums, as I had to part with some meaningful pieces of literature, magazines and (sigh) cookbooks. I left the literature intact and most of the magazines too but before I sent those cookbooks to the Salvation Army I completely raided them (I [...]
LA's DIVA released Moon Moods last year on Critical Heights. Now they have a video for a stonerific warbler from the album Avocado Afternoon. Duuuude.
My pursuit to work avocado into everything I eat continues... One of my favorite treats in town is an avocado smoothie from Just Pho & More. From what I can tell online, they're traditionally made with sweetened condensed milk, avocado, and ice. I didn't see myself using the rest of a can of sweetened condensed milk anytime soon, so I lightened it up with vanilla frozen yogurt and coconut milk. Now I'm hooked, and I don't even have to feel bad about it. [...]
Some of my all time favorite meals are made with garbanzo beans. I thought, through years and years of practice, I had perfected them all. Hummus, chickpeas and spinach, falafel, chickpea stew, you name it and I probably boasted my expertise hard. But last week I realized that I had been a fool. These meals could get better. By using a pressure cooker. Despite railing against such wasteful kitchen gadgetry , I went out of my way to make the Smashed Chickpea and Avocado Sandwich (that was recommended by my friend Becca) [...]
"My salad days, when I was green in judgement and cold in blood..." -Cleopatra in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra Some days it seems that everyone is eating salad. Vanilla salad. The kind that is made with iceberg lettuce, a couple round tomatoes, some shredded carrot or thinly sliced cucumber and a packet of lite salad dressing on the side. I watch it being shoveled into their mouth, unhappily, as it is more the result of some diet fad or an easy way to lose those few pounds that have set it than a choice [...]
Some of the most profound moments in our lives are, in fact, defined by silence. Sometimes there is silence because time is needed. Sometimes there is silence because the meaning of words is too complex, either because the emotions associated with them are happy or sad. Sometimes there is silence because there is nothing more to be said (or maybe nothing ever was). Sometimes there is silence because there are secrets. Sometimes there is silence due interruption; the line cuts off, the Internet connection fails, a letter gets lost. I tend to read into silence. It drives me [...]
Avocado Chip is an ambitious concept album from London troubadour Ben Sommers . Previously the masthead of underrated three-piece Mozzy Green, Sommers is nothing if not intriguing. As a performer, he is darkly charismatic; as a writer, wonderfully imaginative; and with Avocado Chip , he lets that creativity run riot. We meet the characters inhabiting the mythical town of Starving Jane, an immediate hint that Sommers has a particularly dystopian vision to dispense. But like all good tales, this one retains a measure of hope in the face of adversity. However strong the shackles might be, there [...]
Ben Sommers - 'Avocado Chip' Storytelling and music is a wonderful combination. Singer, songwriter and writer Ben Sommers knows this and have therefore released his album ‘Avocade Chip’ along with a perfectly fitting story: ‘Avocado Chip’ exists beyond the realm of the simple explanation. It is more of a world than an album – a [...]
Ben Sommers ( facebook/ twitter ) has taken this whole story-telling through music to beyond its normal four-minute boundary to a whole album in the form of Avocado Chip and a accompanying novel. I've embedded a few pages of the novel, but this is a music blog and that is what I'll focus on... Lyrically he's built the album around the fictional town of Staving Jane - a "funny old town" to quote the opening track. He weaves the stories of greed and triumph between twisted musical genres, breaking paths down to strike on anew. [...]
In a musical climate where bands can see their first track drop on a Monday, release a mixtape on Wednesday and be just as quickly forgotten by Friday, it's quite refreshing to encounter somebody like Ben Sommers . The London-based musician has spent the past couple of years, a time period that we'll probably call 'pre-dubstep' and 'post-chillwave, working painstakingly on his new project. We are happy to bring to you an exclusive album stream of the musician's new album Avocado Chip , available to listen below. Ben [...]
From his newly-released WTF (Wisdom, Tenacity, Focus) , here's Vanilla Ice's video for "Rockstar Party". Get krunk wid it! WOO WOO!
Avocado Chip is vehicle enabling Ben Sommers to cerebrate over the here and now. Avocado Chip A virulent contemplation of 21st Century mores, sees Ben Sommers narrating the stories of Hillary , Dweeb , Higgins , Oculus Una and Old Tall Sam in the town of Starving Jane . I reviewed, in brief another iteration of Bens' , in the shape of Mozzy Green [...]
I don't know why but I just felt like trying my hand at something new this week so I made Avocado Tomatillo Salsa for the first time ever. Watch out for the Serrano Peppers. I made the mistake of touching my eye and was in the shower trying to rinse it out for about 45 minutes! It inspired me to make a mix of music from a few upcoming JAXART Presents shows we have going on. It includes music from Jeans Wilder , Speculator , a. d. l. r. , W-H-I-T-E , [...]
Got some real tasty exotic morsels for this sesh that I've been looking forward to sharing for a while. First up is a cut from the freshly released Soft Rocks album sampler which is just super duper. Warning: this is only on the sampler, not the album, which is also super duper. I haven't heard a great deal more snare drum grooves hipper than this one, it absolutely pops my head off, and it just gets better in the percussion break mid-way through the track. Yeah the brief sections of vox and synth are cool but it's when [...]
I've been a fan Dave Franzese 's work for some time now and have wanted to get a Hand Drawn T since I came across it. At last the day has come! yesssss. If you haven't grasped the concept yet, pretty much you send in your favorite shirt and a list of your favorite things and voila, Dave does his magic. Dave also include some schwag like stickers and the cutest little octopus finger puppet. I checked out his other sites which are totally rad. Dark Igloo is amazingly awesome. My favorite [...]
