This six-piece from Charleston, South Carolina does a mighty fine job of channeling the Beach Boys (with a hint of the Ruby Suns mixed in). They have a great "vintage California sound" that always seems to brighten up my day. ♩ The Explorers Club - Run Run Run [from Grand Hotel ] web // facebook // twitter // soundcloud // shows // iTunes It's been three years since Edward Droste and company [...]
Don't be hating on Justin Bieber. You don't know how tough the kid's got it. One guy that understands is M. Ward, and he shows the Biebster some compassion with his latest video, "Me and My Shadow", from his most recent album, A Wasteland Companion (Merge). The video also features guest appearances Conan [...]

M Ward By Sam Cleeve July 2, 2012 M. Ward stands largely solitarily on the folk landscape. With his raspy, world-weary voice ready to go up against the most evocative of storytellers, his utterly unique fingerpicking technique allowing his five digits to work seemingly independently, and the thread of old-time americana running through his music, he's something of a paragon of his genre. Releases like 20012s End of Amnesia are almost flawless rainy-day records, solemnly lilting from one self-comforting lullaby to another. [...]

'A Wasteland Companion' makes for pretty good company. Read more »
After focusing his efforts on a variety of collaborative projects over the last few years, both as an artist and producer, M. Ward has finally returned to being a solo act with the release of A Wasteland Companion . The Portland-based singer-songwriter recorded the 12-track record at eight different studios, and received a helping hand from the likes of Toby Leaman (Dr. Dog), Howie Gelb (Giant Sand), Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes, Monster Of Folk) and Zooey Deschanel (She & Him). Last week Matt stopped by Conan O'Brien's TBS show with a full backing band [...]

"He continues to be masterful at funnelling exquisite new wine into dusty old bottles..." M. Ward | A Wasteland Companion In a sense M. Ward is a victim of his own success. With his success as a prolific producer and collaborator meaning many a fingers are in many a pie, his own solo work has been rather sidelined of late. Since his last long-player was released in early 2009, he has put out a second volume of his Grammy-nominated yet opinion-dividing She & Him project with actress Zooey Deschanel (followed by last year's collection [...]
I never considered self-indulgence a bad thing. Many critics always keep their high-strung arguments ever so close to their heart on the subject, but the fuss over this quality feels much too superfluous. Why must we strive to be better than our primal instincts? If artists have a romantic relationship with a style of music, let them be, dammit. There’s not much satisfaction to come out of sticking our noses up high because a musician indulges in a common sonic quality, they want us to indulge too. Lets keep in touch with those emotions, beloved indie rockers. [...]
The day after the release of his seventh album, A Wasteland Companion, M. Ward played a sold-out show in San Francisco Wednesday night.
Filed under: Q + A Press Here M. Ward has been kicking around the indie music scene for the past several years in a largely collaborative role. Though he has six solo albums to his name, in the last three years he has released two albums as one half of the twee-pop duo She and Him and one album as one fifth of the rootsy supergroup Monsters of Folk . [...]

By Gareth O'Malley Matthew Stephen Ward's been around a bit since he released his last solo album, Hold Time , in 2009. In that same year, he put out an album with Conor Oberst of Bright Eyes under the Monsters of Folk banner. The following year, in addition to releasing Volume Two , the second of his albums with Zooey Deschanel, he was also involved with Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol's most recent side-project, Tired Pony, who released The Place We Ran [...]

A few of my favorite new releases this week, including the latest from M. Ward and Amadou & Mariam, some standup from the very funny Donald Glover, and the highly anticipated debut LPs from Alabama Shakes and Kishi Bashi (my personal favorite this week). As always, be sure to check out Largehearted Boy , Amoeba Music , and KEXP for a whole lot more of this week's musical offerings. [...]
