What a year for music! Especially that goofy junk I listen to. I had to start making a list by the time April rolled around, just to make sure I didn't leave any of my favorites out. The common thread for my music picks for this year is that when it comes to bands like The Mars Volta, Pelican, High on Fire, Converge, and Baroness, I've been a fan of each for near on a decade, and to see them continue to push the envelope and explore new sonic terrain is something that is exciting and rewarding. Something else that made [...]

Bear In Heaven recently visited the best music venue in the world, Zanzabar , and delivered a high intensity show that matches the brilliance of their new record I Love You, It's Cool . A list of thier remaining tour dates are after the two videos. If you have any chance to see these guys live, do it without question. Louisville loved Bear In Heaven and can't wait to have them back. We started Backseat Sandbar to help spread the word about local music. We've been going for 5 years now and we're still going strong. We love that you come to us for updates on the Louisville Music scene, but we are not the only show in town. There are plenty of great sources that deserve recognition, so we thought we compile a list so that you can always stay on top of what's going on in this city. Together, we hope that this town will be at the forefront of music culture and appreciate our local artist and the shows [...]

We are almost a quarter of the way through 2011, so it's time for us to announce the front runners for top albums of 2011 (so far). I have to say, it has been a pretty great year already and there are plenty of exciting albums in the pipeline (MMJ, Cults, more Matthew Friedberger solos...!!). I'm especially stoked that three local albums are on the list. Anyway, here we go: TOP ALBUMS OF 2011 (so far...) Braids - Native Speaker Lemonade [...]

Checking in at Skull Alley tomorrow night is the Greensboro, NC band The Bronzed Chorus . They are a two-piece instrumental band that plays a blistering live set complete with tons of WTF-esque moments. Many of those moments come from Adam Joyce's monstrous guitar playing and mastery of one of the biggest pedal boards I've ever seen. Many of those other moments come from Hunter Allen's confounding ability to power out heavy drum beat while having his way with a keyboard and synthesized Atari. The duo's instrumental music is more than just post-rock. It certainly [...]

Hey boys and girls, going to be near Bloomington this weekend? Well then you should head to XRA Fest ! There is a great lineup as always, and made even better that Backseat Sandbar 's very own Brother Stephen will be playing on Sunday! It'll set you back a well-spent $5 per night, or and even better spent $8 for both nights if you buy tickets in advance from TD's or Landlocked . Head over to the XRA Records site for some more info. As we told you back on July 26th , Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, is headed back through Louisville for his final tour on October 2nd. After that, you'll only ever hear Owen banging away classics like Bobby Malone Moves Home on your iPod or turntables, because thirteen years after first using the moniker Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Owen is giving the name and the catalog an early retirement to try something new. That's right, you will never ever have the opportunity to see Casiotone for the Painfully Alone ever perform again after this show. [...]

We could not be more excited to announce this show!!! Backseat has been around for over three years now and one of the best things about running the site has been meeting amazing people. Owen Ashworth is one of those people. He started using the moniker " Casiotone for the Painfully Alone " back in 1997 and five albums, countless EPs and 73s, and years of relentless touring later, he's decided to retire the moniker (and the songs) and move on to new things. Before he does though, he is heading out on one final tour [...]

Let me begin by saying that last night was pretty epic. It all started around midnight when I had the crazy idea to wake my brother ( We Listen for You ) up and head to ear x-tacy's new location and start waiting in line to be the first customers (we were the last customers at the old location). We grabbed two folding chairs, iPods, and a New Yorker and headed down to Douglas Loop. A few employees were still there setting up and they were kind enough to give us a tour of the new digs. We set up [...]

We were there for ear x-tacy's final day in its now officially "old" location. We showed up around 5:30 and movers were already there packing up the store. All of the posters, plaques, and records on the wall were gone and only tape marks were left. There was still a considerable amount of merch out and, as always, we found a few vinyl that we couldn't pass up on. I grabbed Big Boi's new album and a 73 from Javelin. Turns out, I was the last customer! As the dramatic deep voiced announcement let everyone know that it was time [...]
Each Note Secure in Cincy compiled a list of "must follow" twitter'ers for Cincinnati and I thought that was such a great idea, that I would do the same for Louisville. Here is what I've come up with. I've included a few regional links just so we can keep tabs on Lexington, Cincinnati and Indy. I know I've left a lot of people off, but just let this be a spring board. Comment with anyone that I'm leaving off and I'll update the list. It will be a good way to get us all on the same page. [...]
