Mr. Ted McGrath of the now hiatused Antimagic (and ex- These Are Powers ) has put together an album under his solo moniker ATM . The EP is called The Slow Fade , and is being released by Temple South (cassette) and Creative Capitalism (digital). McGrath has fused together numerous influences from punk, no wave, glam, postpunk, art rock and experimental pop to form these sometimes-gritty, sometimes-scary, sometimes-bleak sounds. Two floor toms (one treated, one normal), a snare, an Alesis SR-16 drum machine, a Boss SP 202 sampler, [...]

mp3: The Coasters - Bad Blood It might not be the Monster Mash, but a song with a title like Bad Blood is perfect for your Halloween party playlist. This Leiber/Stoller creation was released as a b-side in 1961. The lyrics follow a similar vein to The Coasters first big hit from 1957, Young Blood. The main difference being, at some point in the intervening years, the protagonist's perspective has changed considerably. So it goes.

Once the perpetrator of internal ear destruction with a vitriolic brand of hard-as-knuckles, penetrative hardcore, The Icarus Line has incontrovertibly become the Joe Cardamone show. It's gone ten by the time he cocksurely struts onstage with the canny conviction of a gambling, toothless jailbird, flouting the smoking ban as the perfume from his roll-up washes over his admirers. And admire is precisely what many are here to do: the agitated fidget, commenting on his petite stature: "he's smaller than I imagined" and the like, garbled anxiously and excitedly. However while Cardamone's more contemporary material makes Mono and Penance [...]
Ana Egge sings with the cool confidence of a seasoned veteran; she's been quietly releasing a series of excellent folk-country albums since the late 1990s. Egge is a singer-songwriter with a gift for telling stories and creating fully-fleshed characters within her lyrics. Bad Blood , Egge's latest, draws a series of portraits of mental illness in different forms and from different angles. Written in response to watching several family members suffer from various afflictions, many of the songs featured on the album show a young artist coping the way she knows best. "Your flowers are [...]

Ana Egge - Bad Blood Release Date: Aug 23, 2011 Label: Ammal Records
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Patrick Fraser Saskatchewan-born, Brooklyn-based folk troubadour Ana Egge isn't your run-of-the-mill alternative-country singer. Using unique production and rock-based chord progressions, Egge has made a name for herself as a Gillian Welch figure with a rocker attitude, which once prompted Lucinda Williams to call her "the Nina Simone of folk." Her upcoming 12-song record 'Bad Blood,' produced by ' [...]

After a way-too-long hiatus, Spank Rock is back with new album news (via Pitchfork ). He will release the new album Everything Is Boring and Everyone Is A Fucking Liar on September 27th on his own Bad Blood Records. The album features production work from Pharell Williams, Boys Noize , XXXchange and N.A.S.A. If this lead cut "Energy" is any sign of what's to come, then he's exiting his Baltimore-bass connection past for a highly elevated electro sound (with some singing). MP3: Spank Rock - "Energy"

Tim Cohen is the Alexei Stakhanov of the music industry. Not content with releasing three full-lengths, one 12" and ten 7" singles since the Fresh and Onlys formed in 2008, he's found time to release three records under his own name in the same period. And alongside his third album he's released an additional eight songs on a pair of coloured vinyl 7"s, which almost add up to a further album! Accompanied by a group that includes Alicia Vanden Huevel of Aisler's Set and James Kim from Kelley Stoltz's band, Cohen's material is far more diverse than [...]

Bad Blood echoes the recent-heartbreak lethargy of shoegaze garage rock, but Cohen has a charming gift for composing frank, jangly rhymes inspired by life's low points. The lyric, "Rock bottom is the top of the world … when the world is upside down" summarizes the album's deadpan slacker misery perfectly. Reminds us of : Stephen Malkmus / The Eels / Lou Barlow / Lou Reed Tim Cohen : Label / Myspace

There are few things in this world I hate more than bland solo projects that just sound like a weaker version of the full band (I'm looking at you, Joe Perry Project ). Just do something DIFFERENT, you know? So you can imagine my relief when I pressed play on the new material from Fresh & Onlys' frontman, Tim Cohen. Yes, relief mixed with confusion, joy and a cocked eyebrow or two. The Fresh & Onlys sound is often classified as "garage" or "Nuggets-influenced" and that would be about right. Cohen's vocal contributions to the band have [...]

Sunday night in Louisville was one for the history books. Put on by Motherlodge , an special "cross-pollination" of art between NYC and Louisville, this show combined talent from all corners of your imagination. It started off will Penny Arcade (NYC) who blasted-off a monologue about the Mona Lisa and her love/hate for her vagina. Her show has been described as a "cutting-edge sex and censorship show." I can't say it was my dish, but intriguing none the less. The parents of the Louisville Leopard Percussionists may have felt [...]
