In preparation for this year's customary wheeling out of the widespread media lie [backed by attention-seeking politicians and clergy ] about how some authority or other is trying to "ban" or "rename" or "rebrand" or "prevent people from celebrating" Christmas, usually "because it might offend [Muslims/ethnic minorities/whoever is the current scapegoat du jour]", i've been reading The Winterval Myth, Kevin Arscott 's excellent and forensic analysis of a falsehood that has now been repeated by the British press at least 283 times since 1998. [If only it came in a physical form [...]

I love the non-news stories about Hollywood, wherein some actor or actress is rumored to be playing a desirable part and then they ask said actor/actress about the rumor and they say they would of course be excited to be cast in that desirable part and then the press takes that tidbit and runs with it and then all of a sudden, in 96 pt. font: CHRISTINA HENRICKS EYEING WONDER WOMAN ROLE. Icky. Not that I wouldn't want to see Hendricks in the famed Wonder Woman costume, I would, it's just can we puh-lease [...]
It's a difficult, but serious issue and this Details Magazine piece seems completely tongue-in-cheek and unwilling to actually address this phenomenon. Considering, one, we live in the age of the geek, right now, and two, douchebags tend to run the show right up until college graduation shouldn't this problem be tackled with aplomb? Instead of merely being a rant against various parental issues that never changes regardless of generation. In 1999, Katie Allison Granju wrote a book, Attachment Parenting , about the virtues of catering to the needs and emotions of the [...]

We went to see " The Boys are Back " over the weekend. It wasn't a film that either of us wanted to see, in particular, but we had a babysitter and an itch to spend some time in the cinema and it was either that, "Avatar" or a legion of other anodyne Hollywood swill. I'm not sure that I'm glad we did. It's not that it is a bad movie, it was very nicely done. Directed by Scott Hicks (" Shine "), and set in South Australia, it is the story of a single father ( Clive Owen [...]
The Telegraph printed a story the other day that atheists are more successful at online dating than our religious counterparts. Unable to concede absolutely anything that might paint a non-believer in a slightly favourable light, 1 they've subsequently got their Religion Editor, the blessed and benighted George Pitcher (right), to redress the balance by suicide-bombing logic on behalf of insecure deities everywhere. When i first saw the title ("Atheists are no good in bed") i jokingly thought "perhaps his argument will be based solely on the [...]

Everything about this article regarding cellphone service prices in America as compared to other developed nations is the worst kind of informational journalism. It's remarkably easy to compare the cost of services, plans, phones, etc. against one another, but the piece obfuscates that by relying on he-said-she-said journalism. Not only that, but Dan Richman buries the meat of the piece - that the FCC is launching an investigation into cellphone company pricing practices - to the very bottom, rather than that being the hook to do actual consumer journalism. To you know, perform a [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. And then the fun begins. You wonder why people don't trust the news anymore? Start right here. It's bad enough that news agencies have adopted the fair and balanced approach as opposed to the truthful and accurate one, but it's really bad when local news programs give up all together and make a mockery of themselves. It goes something like this, and take this with a grain of salt since The Sun isn't exactly known for its journalism integrity, but The Dark Knight star, Christian Bale, aka Batman, was allowed by police to attend the London premiere of the greatest movie in the history of the universe (internet's description not ours) even though he was wanted for questioning in connection to assaulting his mother and sister. That's how you spell it. Now, this is coming from The Sun and here's the basis for the story. Bale's mother and sister went to lodge [...]
