Have you ever found yourself walking head down through a quiet business office and suddenly been surprised by a group of bagpipers honkin' like a gaggle of berserk geese? I didn't think so. It happened to me one day. I found out later that it was a rental group that was getting warmed up in preparation for one of those silly birthday pranks. The subject of the surprise worked in an affiliated office across the street, and they'd gathered on our side so he wouldn't hear them warming up. The only problem was that our [...]
Well honestly, they do more than just piping. There's also some great male vocal harmonies, and percussion. I don't know a lot more about the group Gaiteiros de Lisboa, but I was happy to discover them some time ago on a compilation from the Portuguese label FarolMusica. If Zap Mama were male and Iberian, I suspect they'd sound something like this. The group's name does indeed translate as "Lisbon Bagpipers," and apparently their blend of music is quite popular in Portugal, having won them praise [...]
Yoshi Wada - Singing A record like this doesn't come along very often. First of all, it's one that I am ridiculously excited about. Something I could listen to all day long. But there's something stopping me, you see. And that something is my wife. That's the other reason this is such a rare record. Elise and I hardly disagree on music. I mean, she doesn't always want to listen to the things I do but she at least [...]

The scene: My friend Avi is in Stockholm, in a record shop, flipping through the dusty old vinyl. He pulls out a mysterious record and his face lights up. Avi, as many people know, is wild about Scandinavian music (he runs the website ItsATrap.Com , after all). But what most people don't know is that Avi is also nuts for Trucker Country from the '70s. So when he found this record - Viking Truckers' Love On The Road , you know his life suddenly felt complete. It [...]
Not that anyone was really listening too closely last night, but there was an interesting mix of music backing the annual Victoria's Secret Fashion Show . While Justin Timberlake did perform, even bagpipes can bring sexy back if Alessandra Ambrosio walks down the runway to it. And that was celtic legend Eric Rigler on the bagpipes (if anyone really cared.) Playlist: Victoria's Secret Fashion Show 1. "Sexyback" - Justin Timberlake 2. "Breathe Me" [...]
Song of the day: #31 Rufus Harley – "Acknowledgement (A Love Supreme)"
"i think this is the first time I've ever seen a brother playing bagpipes and wearing a kilt!" exclaims someone in the comments. Rufus Harley was the first jazz musician to adopt the Highland bagpipes as his instrument of choice. Here he plays a great version of Coltrane 's "Acknowledgement" off the classic album A Love Supreme , interpolating a little bit of "Greensleeves" along the way (and why not). This 1987 performance is from a live DVD of Harley and the Sun Ra Arkestra (which i haven't got, but would very much like [...]
