I'm going to be honest, I was watching Eagle Vs. Shark last night and I realized that Jemaine looks like Alfie from Bahamas which led me to streaming his new record and falling in love with "I Got You Babe". Funny how my train of thought unravels. Bahamas played for us last SXSW and he was one of my faves. His new record is superb, it's getting more Jack Johnson/John Mayer-ish but I don't mind at all. Find out more here. Filed under: Exclusive , New Releases Brushfire Records 'Barchords' is the second release by Bahamas -- the alter ego of Toronto singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen -- and follows up 2009's 'Pink Strat,' a record that thrust the mild-mannered one-time guitar-for-hire into the spotlight through a wave of critical acclaim, capped off with a Juno nomination in the Roots & Traditional category. Jurvanen isn't exactly the folk festival type, though; in fact, the way in [...]

Today Bahamas drops Barchords via Jack Johnson's Brushfire Records, and plays a release day show at the Mercury Lounge at 7pm. From all accounts, Jurvanen is a captivating live performer and we're looking forward to checking out the show and continuing to dig into Barchords . You can get a sense of the organic approach Jurvanen takes to his writing in [...]

Afie Jurvanen isn't going to suffer from high blood pressure any time soon. The connecting thread between Barchords , his new album as Bahamas , and 20092s debut Pink Strat is the laid back, relaxed and mellow vibe of the music. Jurvanen's left his days as a player in other people's band in the past; he's as comfortable in his role as band leader as he is in a well-worn pair of jeans, and that comes across so effortlessly in Bahamas sound. For all the similarity between the two records, [...]

Afie Jurvanen's work as Bahamas fits in well with Brushfire Records' roster. For one, some dude named Jack Johnson is at the helm. Secondly, Bahamas' sophomore LP, Barchords , answers to the label's sunny, west coast, guitar-centric leanings. Thus, it's hard to believe Jurvanen hails from the Great White North, for Barchords bottles up the California lo-fi, acoustic aesthetic so well that the album practically situates the listener on a windswept Pacific beach as the sun sets. An astute student of the male crooner canon, Bahamas whips soul-infused vocals, bittersweet lyrics, and uplifting melodies [...]

Above anything, Afie Jurvanen is a guitar player. The Toronto-based songwriter gathered steam as Feist's touring guitarist. But to those who know him as Bahamas, Jurvanen's known for his to-the-point songs on his last album Pink Strat—a nod to a guitar Jurvanen played. The songwriter will release Barchords on Feb. 7 on Brushfire Records. The title, as you might guess, has a double meaning for the songwriter, who wanted his second album to also have a guitar-based title. Read more »

Last year we introduced you to Afie Jurvanen, a Canadian guitarist for hire who toured with Feist and whose first solo album Pink Strat was one of my favorites of the summer. I have been anxiously awaiting his sophomore effort Barchords since then and after absorbing the album for several weeks, I am happy to report that it has more than lived up to my lofty expectations. An album full of subtlety Barchords expands on Jurvanen's previous efforts but with the help of well placed background singers and a [...]

A sleepy, smoky bar. Tall tables and ashtrays, scattered and half-full. A few barflies bellied up, backs turned to the stage. A golden guitar appears before the microphone. The speakers bark as the cord slides home and one of the silent strangers glances over at the guitar. A pale hand grips the fretboard, its partner poised above the pickups. Twang , CHK, twang , CHK. Every chord, a heartbeat. Every heartbeat, a breath. Every breath, an ascension. Bar stools slowly swivel towards the spotlights. The barkeep has stopped sweeping up yesterday's dust, his hands and chin resting on [...]

The Careful Ones are a relatively new indie/folk band from Lakeland Florida that has been attracting attention with their soulful melodies and ambient tones. The music is driven by acoustic guitars, heavy vocal harmonies, and light percussion (guitar slapping, stomping, heavy strumming, occasional bass hits). The lyrics are introspective and presented in a voice that's somewhere between Bahamas and Sleeping At Last . Their debut Moths, Flames, Etc. is a lonesome collection of well written songs, with each instrument focusing on what's best for the music rather than how [...]

On Tuesday, February 7th you will wake up and it will feel like a normal morning. You'll go about your typical weekday routine. Nothing will seem different, but something will be. You see if the calendar were to skip that Tuesday, the new album Barchords ( pre-order ) from Afie Jurvanen aka Bahamas , would never release. It would exist, just never be heard. Stuck in some sort of musical purgatory it would rot and disintegrate into the memory of a recording that never was. How sad. Thankfully that's not how our system of reckoning works. It [...]
![[New] Bahamas – I Got You Babe](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4018900_lg.jpg)
Alfie Jurvanen of Bahamas has long been known for his soulful style of folk music. The second single off of his forthcoming release, Barchords , is an example of him living up to his reputation. The drums are light and airy, the guitars are melodic and catchy, and the vocals are breathy, intimate, and complimentary to the guitars. Though the song is about losing someone it's still really light hearted and easy to listen to; you'll probably find yourself humming it throughout the day without even realizing it. [...]

Bahamas (aka Canadian Afie Jurvanen) is back with a new album, his sophomore LP Barchords , out on February 7th via Brushfire Records. To go along with his first single "Caught Me Thinkin'", we can now hear " I Got You Babe " (via Consequence of Sound ). Don't be confused though, this is not the song by Sonny and Cher. "It's a song about a guy who's losing someone. About a guy who would do things differently, if given the chance."
