Not much needs to be said this week. This might be the height week of the year in terms of good music. Not only are Band of Horses out with their highly anticipated Mirage Rock album, but there's tons more to listen to. Let's briefly rattle off some names since there's simply way to much to cover. B en Folds Five ... what's not to like? Each album they come out with is pretty darn good; the equivalent of Matt Pond PA for me, really. Grizzly Bear 's highly anticipated album Shields is [...]

This week finally sees the U.S. release of An Awesome Wave , the awesome debut of Alt-J . We've been playing the U.K. band regularly on KEXP for months, but today you can pick up a copy for yourself. Also topping this week's list of new releases - not quite as long as last week's but still pretty dang long - is the anticipated new album by Grizzly Bear . Stefano Giovannini It seems counter-intuitive to not look forward to hearing an artist's first album of new material in half a decade - the follow-up to arguably her best work, no less - but then things are rarely straightforward when you're talking about Cat Power . With all respect to those who'd bestow the honour on You Are Free or Moon Pix , but The Greatest was as good as its title as far as I was concerned. It may [...]

There's something distinctly surreal about oldage recording techniques of the past decades. What came before the 90s was production that relied solely on (physical) tape recording and systems wired entirely in analog fashion. This is now a mainstay to what is most often seen as the 'indie' sound. While that's not to say that indie artists should strive to be lo-fi, rather this quality is still present as a result of low-budget sound engineering (or, even because some producers/studios insist on it, ala Montreal's very own Hotel 2 Tango ). Like Sam Beam [...]
