November 2011 Bookstore Events

November 2011 Bookstore Events multiple sources claiming to be Barnes & Noble employees are reporting that kiosks and other retail goodies are showing up in bookstores ahead of a November 7th launch. That would put the Nook Color 2 on retail shelves a week before Kindle Fires begin shipping out from Amazon. An anonymous B&N employee tells The Digital Reader that his or her store is building a huge new display in the center of the store especially for the Nook tablets and e-readers. Spotlight, LCD TVs, touch screen demonstration kiosks, the works. A manager told him or her to expect a [...]

Photos: Nile Rodgers Discussing His Book "Le Freak" In New York

Photos: Nile Rodgers Discussing His Book "Le Freak" In New York Photos by G. Nile Rodgers October 20, 2011 was a night I've been looking forward to for a very long time. It was the night Nile Rodgers stopped by Barnes and Noble in Union Square in Manhattan to discuss and sign copies of his autobiography "Le Freak - An Upside Down Story of Family, Disco and Destiny." It's pretty safe to say that anyone who has ever heard pop music likes at least one song he's written or produced. His list of accomplishments is [...]

Colin Meloy Releasing A Book, Appearing at Barnes and Noble w/ Carson Ellis

Colin Meloy Releasing A Book, Appearing at Barnes and Noble w/ Carson Ellis Wildwood: The Wildwood Chronicles Decemberists front man Colin Meloy can add "young adult author" to his resume when his new book, Wildwood , is released on August 30 . I added the "young adult" qualifier, because this book is actually not Colin's first foray into the world of publishing, some folks might remember that he previously penned a volume in the 33 1/3 series about The Replacements Let It Be . In support of this [...]

Nook Color is the Most Popular E-Reader?

Nook Color is the Most Popular E-Reader? I'm sorry, but I still find the news that the Nook Color has become the most popular e-reader, supplanting anything that Amazon offers to be factually incorrect. Of course, this makes me like one of those people that doesn't believe in evolution or the dinosaurs despite mounting evidence to the contrary. With that said, if you make a claim, you need to provide numbers to back it up and none of the articles that make the claim that the Nook Color has passed the Kindle in sales has any factual support. Here [...]

June 2011 Bookstore Events It's summer and things have slowed down considerably at our local bookstores in terms of both quantity and quality (I'm only showing the pearls here of course). Barnes & Noble's New Nook Will Be an E-Ink Touchscreen

Barnes & Noble's New Nook Will Be an E-Ink Touchscreen Nobody will every accuse BN of dragging their feet when it comes to the e-reader game. From This is My Next : Barnes & Noble just announced its all-new Nook, with an E Ink screen and zero shenanigans. It's being subtitled "The Simple Touch Reader," with a single 6-inch black and white touchscreen. There's obviously no physical keyboard, which shaves off 10 percent of the "bulk" in comparison to the Kindle 3. Barnes & Noble also made sure to drive other points of comparison home, like "80 percent less flashing" (that black screen flash that [...]

Apple, Tablets and Competition

Apple, Tablets and Competition If you read between the lines of recent essays between Jason Kottke and Tim Carmody, it becomes pretty clear that Apple's only potential competition in the tablet market will likely come from Amazon, using a modified version of Google's Android software. Kottke lays out a pretty good blueprint for how a company can compete with Apple, basically coming down to a company needing to incorporate cloud services, a more streamlined method for delivering media content than iTunes, and incorporating some element of "social" into the product. Amazon essentially [...]
