Shape-shifting Syracuse ensemble Ra Ra Riot have had something of a time of it since they first came together in 2006: they began brightly, independently releasing a brilliant eponymous EP, only to subsequently lose their original drummer John Pike, whose body was found drowned in suspicious circumstances in Buzzards Bay in the summer of '07. Though in spite of a revolving door policy in terms of personnel, it's the pinning down of an in any way definitive sound with which they've so consistently struggled and third full-length Beta Love is nothing, if not a transparent reflection [...]
There are several services out there that offer easy tour date management and aggregation for artists and managers, and we're big fans of them all (Songkick, BandsInTown and SuperGlued to name a few). Each service also allows fans to connect their Facebook profiles so they can receive notifications when bands ...

Looking at a September sunset that perfectly matches the cover of the Boy EP at the end of a high school football game, using a ladle as a microphone while unloading the dishwasher to “Can You Tell,” family-road-tripping with the windows down as we blast Gorilla Manor , surviving my first finals week of college by watching the La Blogotheque video of “ Who Knows, Who Cares ” about seven thousand times…Ra Ra Riot and Local Natives have in many ways formed the core of my life’s soundtrack for the past few years. [...]
Sometimes being a band's superfan pays off. David Dean Burkhart is a self-proclaimed fan of Ra Ra Riot, and created a video for the band's single and title track from their new LP, Beta Love . The band liked his video so much, they decided to make it the official music video for the infectious song. The video is equally as smile-inducing and nauseating as the original track, featuring clips from a 1980s San Francisco Bay area dance show called "Dance Party." Some of clips sync up really well with handclaps and awesome hair tosses, I [...]

The last time we heard from Ra Ra Riot, we found them at some sort of crossroad as a band as they put out The Orchard . Their traditional sound, laced heavily with strings and classical music-infused indie tracks was being replaced with heavily pop-inspired melodies. The strings were still there, and the album was still subdued and maintained a steady, down-tempo pace to keep Ra Ra Riot's truest fans content. But just before The Orchard was released in 2010, lead singer Wes Miles released an LP (aptly called, LP ) with side [...]

Stream the new Ra Ra Riot record, Beta Love right now. This, their 1st album without cellist Alexandra Lawn, is easily their most dance-floor/robot-approved release. Beta Love hits next week on Barsuk.

Was very lucky to see Ra Ra Riot play in Ottawa on October 7, 2011 . I really like their orchestral pop-rock music. On January 22nd they will drop their third album Beta Love out on Barsuk (USA and Europe), Hostess K.K. (Japan) and Arts & Crafts (Canada). It's a follow up to their 2010 album "The Orchard" From what I've read that it is a departure from their previous efforts and cellist Alexandra Lawn left the band in 2012. Beta Love clocks in at around 30 minutes [...]

It's called "Don't Move" but it's kind of hard not to move to this.
Alex Schaff and the guys from Yellow Ostrich are back at it again with a video for "Ghost" that tugs at the heartstrings. Director Frank Larson's adds a gorgeous visual dimension to the track. The piece evokes an extreme sense of loneliness, beginning wi th Schaff sitting alone staring out a window. But what makes it so hauntingly beautiful is how his memories are projected via 8mm home video across the dark house where he resides. Slowly, the video becomes an array of these hazy clips, ending as it begins. It's not going to brighten your day, but it's well worth a watch. [...]

Ra Ra Riot 's third album, Beta Love , is out 1/22 via Barsuk Records.
Here's the first track from Ra Ra Riot 's third album (and their first sans cellist Alexandra Lawn), Beta Love , that's slated for a late January release on Barsuk / Arts & Crafts . If you thought 20102s The Orchard skewed pretty hard toward the pop side of the genre spectrum, then "Beta Love" pushes well past the end of it. This is pure, helium-wrapped joy. +MP3: Ra Ra Riot - Beta Love Connect to Ra Ra Riot: [...]

Nada Surf have released a music video for their song "Jules and Jim." The song appears on their latest album, The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy , which was released this year.

Mates of State have announced a brief December tour with their original lineup. The duo - which usually travels with a full band - will be performing as the original two members on the run which kicks off December 5th.
Phantogram "Don't Move" A new music video from Phantogram , a band we've somehow gone this long without doing a post on (not counting the minute clip in our " Babe Watch " Attention Span ). Phantogram consists of Sarah Barthel & Josh Carter , and "Don't Move" is off their 2011 EP Nightlife , out now through Barsuk . - Alex [...]
Ra Riot have announced details of their upcoming third album, Beta Love, the follow-up to the mildly disappointing sophomore release, The Orchard. The new album was recorded in Oxford, Mississippi with producer Dennis Herring (Modest Mouse, Elvis Costello, Wavves) and arrives January 22nd via Barsuk. Check out the full track list and tour [...]

It's been a busy year for Yellow Ostrich , having released Strange Land earlier via Barsuk , but the band is already back at it again with a set of six brand new songs for your ears. The EP is titled Ghost , and the first single is currently available for you to download. It's interesting, as the group's clearly playing with utilizing empty space in order to bring to life some of the inner harmonies they produce with just the vocals. There's [...]

Benjamin Gibbard Former Lives Barsuk Records [2012] Fire Note Says: Ben Gibbard cleans out his 8 year old closet to create his first solo record Former Lives. Album Review: It is actually a bit surprising that Death Cab For Cutie's frontman has not had a solo record until now but Former Lives represents Ben Gibbard's official debut. The album consists of 12 songs that span eight years, three relationships, [...]
Songwriters are funny about what they keep, share, discard or rework, little bits of history and creativity that exist in an odd kind of creative offspring foster home. The twelve songs that make up the eagerly anticipated debut from Ben Gibbard are "a side story, not a new chapter" says the Death Cab For Cutie mainman , perhaps squelching any fears that his Cutie persona may take a back seat to a solo stint. For [...]
