I'm not sure what we've done to deserve all of the amazing music that's been (and being) released this year, but I'll fucking take it. I thought we'd all been naughty and was expecting the year to be populated by the likes of Kreayshawn and Kesha (the special K's), but it's been a year that just keeps giving and giving. After the tender ballads of “Laura” and “Marilyn”, Bat for Lashes picks things up a bit for the 3rd track off her upcoming The Haunted Man LP, the seductive “All Your Gold”. The Haunted Man will be out October 23rd via Capital.

I think it's safe to say that this new Bat For Lashes track is written for either Marilyn Monroe, Marilyn Manson, or Charles Manson. I mean, who else would it be about? "Marilyn" , which can be downloaded from Amazon for free,   has a more lazy, end-of-summer feel to it, and breaks off into a bit of a synth-based slant, at least compared to "Laura" (which was either written about Laura Linney or Laura Bush), the other new cut to [...]

Somewhat lost in the excitement of Bat for Lashes excellent new single, "Laura" is the gorgeous video, which like Alma Harel's clip for Sigur Rós earlier this year, presents it's leitmotif with the help of interpretative dance. Natasha Khan begins the video in a dressing room, singing directly into a camera, which then follows her as she dances alone in an a empty, beautifully-lit theater. I love how much Natasha Khan lives in other worlds.  Her mind is (self-confessedly) always in dreams and far away places, especially when she writes and performs her music.  Her upcoming album, The Haunted Man, is drifting in from the forests October 15th, but the first official single and a video for "Laura" have been released [...]

Though it's easy to dismiss the first bit of Bat for Lashes' song "Laura" as being a bit too reminiscent of Ani DiFranco or Tori Amos (and I'd argue that if you select the right album, that's not an insult, either), it's an effective ballad, and the video is haunting. The chorus, "Laura / You're more than a superstar" has also apparently caught on in the festival circuit in Europe. Bat For Lashes has always been a bit sonically unpredictable - on one album they'll jump from a balladic barn-burner to a Bjork inspired art-rock piece to something that feels barely definable.
