By which I do not mean that Ms. Christmas has found God. I meant "CHRIST!" more in a "screaming random shit when you orgasm" kinda way. 'Cause while Made Out of Babies' often seemingly badshit crazy (in the best possible way) front lady announced her first solo album, The Bad Wife, back in June, now the [...]
Made Out of Babies' masterpiece, The Ruiner, came out exactly two years ago today, and to be honest, I was hoping there might be a new MOOB album in the not-too-distant future - especially after watching them absolutely annihilate live earlier this year. Well, the bad news is that there's news on the MOOB front, vocalist/batshit [...]

Brooklyn ambient/doom metal band A Storm of Light are heading back on the road next month for a coast-to-coast tour that finishes up with a show at Union Pool on March 18th. For most of the West Coast shows, A Storm of Light is playing with Shrinebuilder. Harvestman is along for a few of the West Coast dates as well and there are shows with US Christmas, Via Vengeance, Rumanian Buck, Batillus, Indian, and Battlefields on some of the other tour stops. A Storm of Light is touring behind their second release [...]

Wikipedia defines an EP as "a vinyl record, CD, or music download which contains more music than a single, but is too short to qualify as an LP. Usually, an EP has around 10–28 minutes of music, a single has up to 10 minutes, and an album has 30–80 minutes." EPs are often the domain of little-known/unsigned bands, one-off projects, or filler meant to sate audiences between LP releases. Which is to say, EPs often aren't the most essential listening you're likely to find; however, we've heard more than a couple of great ones this year [...]

The prolific Jesu releases another winner, this time a split EP with the heavy-hitting Battle of Mice . The two songs found here are gorgeous explorations of sonic noise and melancholy; "Clear Stream" is laden with vocodered vocals hidden underneath those wonderful cathedrals of sound that Jesu is known for, while "Falling From Grace" is a gorgeous yet sad almost-instrumental. What Jesu lacks in aggression, Battle of Mice supplies. Led by the wonderful little-girl-like voice of Julie Christmas, Battle of Mice is a new kind of [...]
SPYLACOPA began as an obscure ambient-electronic side-project for Brooklyn-based CANDIRIA guitarist John LaMaccia, but after accruing a band of notables - namely Greg Puciato of DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, Jeff Caxide of ISIS, and Julie Christmas of MADE OUT OF BABIES - the project was bound to gain momentum. Judging by the sounds of the new [...]
Call it the Sarah Palin Effect: so much is already stacked against In This Moment (a metalcore band two to three years after metalcore flickered out with an incredibly attractive frontwoman equipped with a ridiculously provocative sense of fashion) that the bar is set almost comedically low. But much like struggling to answer simple follow-up [...]

Today we bring you two new supergroups that are both producing unexpected music, far from what one might expect by looking at their line ups. First up, theseseans has been raving about United Nations for a while now. Comprised of bands that aren't our normal material United Nations includes Geoff Rickly ( Thursday ) and Daryl Palumbo ( Glassjaw ); the band also features Ben Koller of Converge , and that dude can make anything sound awesome. The end result is fast grinding punk, and we would recommend them to anyone who loves [...]

The lesson in the new Jesu / Battle of Mice split could be "Good things come to those who wait." The split was originally announced a couple years ago, and since then it's been held up by a lack of cover art and who knows what else. With belated explanations out of the way, let's just say it's rare that two bands on a split end up complimenting each other this well. Let's face it, different bands sharing space on one disc can be hit or miss, and the end product doesn't usually have the cohesiveness [...]

The ever prolific Justin Broadrick act Jesu is up to their old tricks again, releasing a ton of new material. We got wind of their new EP Why Are We Not Perfect? Then we stumbled upon a review of their split with Envy in the latest Decibel , then we found out they just put out a split with Battle of Mice . Damn! OK...so it's not three full EPs, but it is three new short releases. Not to mention you get some Envy and Battle of [...]
