San Francisco MC A-1 just released a new track, "Summertime Sadness", where he rhymes over a Ryan Hemsworth remix of Lana Del Rey's track of the same name . This isn't the first time A-1 has rapped over a Lana Del Rey sample – "Now You Do" from The Thurl Tape uses Flosstradamus' "Lana's Theme" as its beat. While "Summertime Sadness" is well, very sad, Thurl Tape has a some more lighthearted material that does a great job complementing [...]

Nacent SF trio Couches are setting out on their "Real Lazy Tour" of the West Coast during May, and it all starts tonight at Amnesia with a set sandwiched between headliner Brasil and opener Old & Gray . Frontman David Mitchell (whom you may recognize as the founder of 20 Sided Records ) describes the band's sound as "slacker indie rock," which he explains is "original indie rock, like Pavement, Built to Spill, Archers of Loaf, Sonic Youth, etc." The three-piece is planning to [...]

The Dodos announced recently that they've signed to Polyvinyl Records - also the new home of local band Painted Palms , as well as Sonny + The Sunsets . Details on their first release with the Illinois-based label are yet to surface, other than this silly teaser video that contains a snippet of an upcoming track: Since No Color came out in 2011 on Frenchkiss, The Dodos have remained fairly quiet, aside from a light show schedule. Later this month, the band will travel [...]

Jared Griffin, primary songwriter for San Francisco's Sioux City Kid was one of the first artists to put Jack White's refurbished Third Man Record Booth to use, recording the track "Heartbreak Shakedown" on Record Store Day in Nashville last month. They grabbed a turntable and luckily digitized the first play, as the record didn't play all the way through the second attempt. The throwback recording makes Griffin's gravelly voice even more gravelly – listen or download below. Sioux City Kid is finishing up its second LP for a release later this year, [...]

Roughly a year after the release of Fine Steps ’ first LP, Boy’s Co. , the Sacramento native foursome is back with a new 7”, All Day Long . The upbeat jangle and surf-rock guitar is offset by singer Julian Elorduy’s deep vocal undercurrent, almost echoing Ian Curtis. The vocals and the extra jangle are what set this song apart from the rest of the Beach Fossils/DIIV/Surf Club type surf rock emerging these days. Plus, Fine Steps name has absolutely no reference to water sports. Even cooler is Elorduy’s DIY music video for [...]

Allow us to introduce you to The Technicolors , straight outta Phoenix and ready to take over San Francisco. The Technicolors have a big, big sound: though they’ve garnered comparisons to Oasis over the years for their echoey aura, they’re also rooted in classic, shred-heavy rock ‘n’ roll. Currently on a West coast tour, they’ll be in town at DNA Lounge on Friday...and we've got a pair of tickets to give away. If you want a chance at them, check out the details below. Trivial Shields is the new project for Christian Carpenter, who was the brain and hair behind the late Chrystian Rawk , a project Carpenter says "didn't quite translate out of my friend circle." Carpenter is now in Istanbul where he's teaching English, and it sounds like there's a bit of Middle Eastern influence toward the end of Trivial Shields' debut track "Camelot". Monday, Carpenter released another song, "Enough", featuring contributions from Idea the Artist and members of DRMS , Bells Atlas , and Waterstrider . He will release a Trivial Shields [...]

Oakland’s favorite du-wop, punk-infused rock ‘n’ rollers Shannon & the Clams are gearing up to release their latest LP later this month, titled Dreams in the Rat House . The threesome first gave us a little taste of the new material with the 'Ozma' 7” released in August 2012, and now another new song, “Into a Dream”, has emerged via a premiere on Nylon Magazine. As always, Shannon Shaw’s vocals are magically charismatic, somehow embodying a handpicked bundle of musical eras all at once. Her howls meld with fellow vocalist and [...]

The lovely people of Wood Shoppe are at it again. This time around, the monthly music series is bringing Southern California-based outfits PYYRAMIDS and The Hindu Pirates up to San Francisco to join the jangly rock and rollers of Cool Ghouls , four guys who have been making the city proud and earning accolades from the likes of Filter and Impose since the March release of their eponymous debut LP. Most recently, the band caught the attention of UK-based music and culture publication The 405 , who premiered the music video for "Natural Life" last week. [...]
