Phantasmagoric Mix Happy Wednesday everyone! I had some difficulty naming this week's HDPP , as it seems I may overuse the word "dreamy" to describe a lot of my playlists. How else can you characterize a group of songs that transport the listener to the nonphysical realm of existence in which the physical human body is said to have a counterpart? Perhaps I should use phantasmagoric? Seems to fit the bill. Stream the playlist below (or by clicking here ). :: Hump Day Power [...]
Stargazer Mix This week's HDPP features songs that I'd classify somewhere between melodic shoegaze and otherworldly pop - music perfect for observing the interplanetary events like the Venus transit. This mix has been on repeat since its conception, and it keeps getting better with each listen. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as I have. Hear it by simply clicking here . Playlist is below. :: Hump Day Power Play (5-30-2012) :: 01 :: "Alphabet Song" - Lower Dens [...]
Listen below to the newest DIIV single, "Doused" , off their upcoming debut, "Oshin" . Beach Fossils ' Zachary Cole's second band returns with a new single, a new sound, and a new name. The group, formerly known as Dive has just changed their name to the more google-able DIIV , and has just released their first single under their new name, "Doused" , which will appear on their debut, "Oshin" , due for release June 26th via Captured Tracks . I think you'll notice right away that our March mix is a very different beast from the February mix. For example, we open this one with the sultry, shimmering new single from Beach House, whereas last month's mix opened with an upbeat, tropical-island inspired B.I.G. remix. It's indicative of the overall mood of this mix which I'd describe as cozier, more laid back, more introspective, and even a little sexier than it's predecessor. You could float through the clouds on the back of Lemonade's single. The Evy Jane single, like everything else I've heard from the duo, is irresistible. And [...]

Whoa, what happened to the past 2 weeks? All I remember is there was a Uhaul van, a lot of coffee shops and a rainy new city. Here is what I have been listening to. Free mp3: Deer Tick - Virginia Girl Free mp3: Andrew Bird - Give It Away Free mp: Andrew Bird - Fiery Crash [...]
"Born to Lose" is the first single from Sleigh Bells' second album Reign of Terror, out this February. Judging by this single (MP3 inside), listeners can expect the same sort of cheerleader-like vocal chants and voraciously fuzzy guitar riffs found on 2010's Treats, their widely acclaimed debut full-length. Fun stuff as usual

Sometimes an act spins off a band and goes on to exceed the success of the former. It's hard to tell if this is the case with bassist John Peña. His band Beach Fossils has drawn considerably attention, including " Adversity " as Song of the Day, a look at their EP [...]
Feathers are a group of four girls from Brisbane creating infectious lo-fi dream-pop. While some of their songs are lively and upbeat, a large number are darker and based on harmony rather than rhythm. Hunter’s Moon is an album full of different moods and well-executed hooks, not to mention some great vocal performances that are

When it comes to dreamy, creative indie pop, New Jersey's Real Estate do it damn well. Their eponymous first album, which came out in 2009, was a definite favorite; perfect for when I wanted to listen to something different but easily so. [...]

Click image to download full album Song: Beach Fossils - Adversity "Beach Fossils - Adversity" What's so good? Somewhat of an atypical sound on today's Song of the Day. Beach Fossils caught my attention when Devin first wrote a review of their EP back in February. The song she featured, "Face It," had a dreamy, twangy sound, and I must say that I quite enjoyed it. As such, I wasn't at all surprised that upon listening to the [...]

As another weekend approaches, so does another playlist. This week we've got lots to offer, including quite a few covers and emerging artists who struck us just right. If you missed our 'Mix For The Weekend VIII' you can still check it out here . You'll probably notice first Mumford and Sons (terrible name if you ask me), covers White Lie's "Unfinished Business". Unfortunately the English indie rock band, White Lies's, new album Ritual didn't completely stick to us this time around. So here's a good look back. [...]

If District residents are anything like me, they're itching for more 70 degree days complete with sun, beer, and lawn sports. I know, I know, you're thinking: all this dude blogs about is Cut Copy and summertime sunshine. Well I'm sorry but I write what I live and I live what I love. Get over it. Since the Weather Gods blessed us a couple Fridays ago, the meteorological conditions have been mediocre at best, mostly tempting us humans with slightly bearable barometric conditions, spoiling any semblance of good weather with gale-force gusts. But things may be [...]
We're nostalgic already. Remember Kanye's album? That was dope. Seriously though, we had a great year and we hope you did too. Here's a little something we put together to put all our love for 2010 in one place. The list was made by averaging Matt, Steve, and Ethan's 25 favorite albums of 2010 (Arnold's opinion, though very highly regarded, was not included because he doesn't like to confine music to lists...or he just didn't make one). Click on the artist to see what we've had to say about them previously, and click the album art on [...]

The problem with so-called best-of lists, is that they are really just a collection of items organized based on experience and time, in that there will be plenty of albums heard the following year and beyond that will hold just as much weight as these we dub as "Best." So, as of right now, at this particular time in the tail end of 2010 and the first moments of 2011, these albums are the best. There's no question about it; it will change. My next list (which I've started, but may take a while to publish) is [...]

Looking back at all the music I added to my collection in 2010, it's obvious that this past year was more about digging up classics than discovering new material for me. But that doesn't mean I wasn't listening or looking. There actually were quite a few releases this year that caught the full attention of my ears and heart, even if I was being a stubborn curmudgeon. I didn't want to do a "Best of" list, since that would seem somewhat pompous of me ( and it's really just a matter of personal preference anyway ). So instead [...]
