One of the many dishes that Pilgrims learned from their Native American counterparts was Baked Navy Beans. These beans were originally made by being wrapped in deer skins along with venison, bear fat and maple syrup and then placed in a pit lined with hot stones and cooked through. Today's version remains pretty close to the original although most recipes have traded the venison for pork. One would think that a food whose history is littered with animal carnage and dead flesh would quickly be removed from a vegetarian's diet. Unfortunately a large part of my childhood revolves [...]

I really need to be winding down for the evening, but I've been meaning to post this for ages and I just spent a good half hour going down the YouTube hole watching clips of the above mentioned artist. The fantastic Beans On Toast has a new album just around the corner- Trying To Tell the Truth is out December 1st on Xtra Mile. It possibly speaks to my tiredness, but possibly just to Beans On Toast's awesomeness, that I'm having a hard time saying anything other than I love this guy. This [...]

Oh! You haven't heard of The Flowerpot Sessions compilation from Communion Records?! Aww... well... that's alright. I guess I'm just more perceptive than you and open to new things. I suppose some people are just stuck in their ways, you probably wouldn't get it. Read more..
Two years ago yesterday, Melanie and I launched this website. My first show for the blog was seeing Frank Turner at the Marquis Theater in Denver. Last night I saw Fake Problems at the same venue. Both shows were amazing. Unfortunately, this video is from neither show, but it features Mr. Turner, Fake Problems, and bonus Beans on Toast covering ABBA's "Dancing Queen". Yes, it is exactly as awesome as it sounds. Thanks for a fantastic two years! We love you all!
Beans on Toast has been around the block and back. He's released two albums, and taken his musings to a various mix of stages big and small around the world.Brutally honest, blunt as a hammer yet sharp as a razorblade, he's has beenentertaining festival goers for years as a solo act, hip-hop act, country band and asan excitable drunk. The April Fools tour is a self organised tour of the UK on a

Jamboree harks back to another time - the kind of place that appears in books about the 60s and 70s - a magical place full of curios (my £5 entry included a wonderful Wickerman-esque hare mask) and intriguing people, where everyone knows each other but at the same time still welcomes you in with open arms and engaging smiles. The kind of place you dream about finding before 'Shoreditch cool' invades and turns it into a museum of itself, with free wifi and networking (seriously, what happened to El Paso? Does anyone really prefer it now?!). I almost don't want [...]

I was basically the worst person at SXSW this year, and instead of doing what I was supposed to do, just had a good time. I mean, it was totally worth it, but I super slacked off. And last night I was organizing some stuff, and I found these old videos. This year, we had [...]
UK people: tonight/early tomorrow Channel 4 will be beginning the 3-part The Strummerville Sessions, a new miniseries covering emerging musical talent. The show is based around the music charity Strummerville, which was set up in honour of Joe Strummer to create opportunities for new acts. Starting Monday night (going into Tuesday morning), Strummerville presents a [...]

I began my very first Secret Garden Party experience with a packed out show at the Where The Wild Things Are Stage, and the wild thing in question in this case was the amazing Beans On Toast - aka Jay, who runs the amazing Flowerpot venue in Kentish Town . I first encountered Beans On Toast performing solo at a sold out Frank Turner show in Cambridge last year, and when I saw him appearing full band on the Secret Garden Party lineup, I knew the performance was a must. Remarking at the [...]
As Saturday nights go, mine was a real treat. I was lucky enough to be one of 200 people who spent it at The Flowerpot in Kentish Town (incidentally a venue run by the amazing Beans On Toast ), where the advertised "members of Mumford & Sons " were in fact joined by Damien Rice , Pete Roe , Alan Pownall , and Angus & Julia Stone for an unforgettable night of music madness. I arrived before the 7pm opening time and was glad to have done so when I joined [...]

The days have got longer, and the sun is starting to glisten through the trees making this perfect timing for the latest instalment of Summer days through the folkish haze (previously vols 1 and 2 ). As with all our mixtapes here on TBW, there are some bands you may know and others you wish you did - and all perfectly accompanied by a jug of Pimms... Big shout outs to the wonderful folk at Young & Lost , Song, by Toad , and For Folks Sake for pushing [...]

Tonight I went to Frank Turner's Myspace page and read that he was performing in Eww New Jersey. Next, I rode a bus to see Frank Turner play at a bowling alley in Asbury Park (It's on the Jersey Shore)! . This is the show I attended... Frank Turner has two separate identities in the US and UK. In the UK, Frank is affiliated with the West London Folk [...]
What is there to say about Communion ? It started off in 2006 as a club night and community at the Notting Hill Arts Club, founded by Ben Lovett (Mumford and Sons), Kevin Jones (Cherbourg) and producer Ian Grimble. But my what an impression it has left as it has provided a platform for the newest bands on London's circuit. The night has seen the likes of Noah and the Whale, Laura Marling, Mumford and Sons, JJ Pistolet and Peggy Sue grace the stage and has become closely associated with the recent resurgence of folk in the capital. [...]
Frank Turner, dear readers, is amazing. I saw him at the same venue back in January of this year, and the vibe has certainly changed in over the course of a few months. The musician I saw perform at the beginning of 2009 was a humble, beautiful and creative man whose brilliant music was significantly under-appreciated. Friday evening saw that same humble, beautiful and creative man recognised; by a sold-out room full of people, to be specific. On top of the fact it was a sell-out crowd, I feel I can say without [...]
Now in its fourth year famed charity fundraising event Lexapalooza has scheduled a special day of live music this October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Lexapalooza is starting to establish itself as a leading event celebrating all genres of music and raising money for charity with all proceeds from the day going to the charity, Breast Cancer Campaign. He is so wonderful. His voice, it's just like heaven.
Jay, we love you. Josh Weller's alright by me too.

This show was absolutely amazing. Beans on Toast is such a wise, witty, clever wordsmith/street poet. I love his songs and I love his ethos. View the rest of the set on FLICKR .
