Some things are just timeless: an excellent beer, Gone With The Wind , your best bros, and balls-to-the-wall punk rock. Virginia and Michigan's own Bars of Gold hope to capitalize on the latter two. Longtime bandmates Ben Audette, Brandon Moss, Nick Jones, and Scotty Iulianelli of instrumental rock outfit Wildcatting joined hands with old friend and former vocalist of the short-lived but highly respected Bear vs. Shark , Marc Paffi, to kick out some jams. The result is complex, but searing. Their debut record, Of [...]

As posted about a week ago , Bars of Gold , a new musical project featuring members of Bears of Shark and Wildcatting, is set to release its debut album Of Gold August 24th on Friction Records. The awesome people over at Friction Records , have sent us an MP3 copy of the final mastering of "The Hustle" the first single off the forth coming album. The track features a banjo, lead singer Marc Paffi's notoriously intense vocals, zealous and earnest melodies, and moments of calm silence contrasted by [...]

First things first, a bit of the back-story. Bear vs. Shark only released two albums. Each is fantastic in its own right, highlighted by the critically acclaimed 2005's Terrohawk , an indie/post-hardcore record at once chaotic, energetic, jazzy, emotional, soothing and melodic. Drawing comparisons to At the Drive In, Fugazi, Cursive and Mission of Burma, Bear Vs. Shark was a band that griped you with its energy, sustained you with its complexities and had limitless potential. Sadly the band ended their far too brief tenure shortly [...]
by chuck bell Touring is undoubtedly the most difficult part of maintaining a band. Traveling nonstop, living in close quarters and trying to subsist on little to no money is often too much for these musicians to handle. Despite the fact that its members knew each other since junior high (and in some cases preschool), Bear vs. Shark ultimately fell victim to the hardships of the road. Growing up as childhood friends in Highland and White Lake, Michigan, Marc Paffi, John Gaviglio, Derek Klegsen and Mike [...]

Generally, if you invest in an album and it takes you to all sorts of different locales, that's a good thing, right? But, then again, the scattershot bands are often too busy with pisstakes and random diversions, distracting from the quality of the overall product. I've listened to Rejoicer , by Grooms , several times, and I still can't put my finger on what it is they're DOing. And for that I thank them, because by dint of their constantly [...]
Today's Cougar pick are a band hailing from Utah, Nevada and Arizona, just in case one state doesn't satisfy you. Shark Speed describe their music as 'progressive' though personally I prefer to go with melodic 'post-punk with pop sensibilities'. Listening to debut album 'Sea Sick Music' it is immediately that these boys are incredibly competent [...]

Go ahead; click on that picture up there and get the full-size treatment. I really want you to see and understand what it's all about. What you're seeing is a waveform representing the second song off the new Metallica album, Death Magnetic . What you're seeing is bullshit. Check out this Wired article to really have it outlined , but the gist of the new album is that before the album was even mixed the individual tracks were already compressed beyond normal listening levels. See, in the last several years music producers have [...]

Hey, after a long and painful series of fatal computer errors - I've updated to a new, completely decked out MacBook. Heh... yeah, 2 gigs of ram, 160 gig hardrive. The works. Needless to say, I'm a happy camper. Now on to the music. I recently got an email asking me to give this new band from Manchester a listen. They are... a funky Bloc Party with a lot of potential. Morning Sparks are... Ade Harrison - Rhodes, Juno & Nord Dan [...]
Well, Michigan was a well deserved break, and it was the perfect time to catch up on some of the music hidden in the back of my iPod. So I hope you enjoy these songs as much as I did on my Lake Michigan encounter: Ma Jolie - Bear Vs. Shark Blacking Out All The Friction - Death Cab For Cutie Gold In Them Hills - Coldplay Lowdown - Lali Puna [...]
