If you don’t connect with the Beastie Boy’s albums, you fall under one of two categories: 1. You are one of those people who proclaims loudly that you are in search of “high art,” while secretly you crank the volume when “No Sleep Till Brooklyn” comes on the radio. 2. You have no sense of rhythm whatsoever and words such as “inappropriate” escape your mouth on a regular basis. The Beastie’s music doesn’t need to sacrifice fun to make art and doesn’t need to sacrifice art to make fun. Now that this seemingly lighthearted, simple notion comes [...]

As we all know by now, Adam "MCA" Yauch of the Beastie Boys passed away yesterday at the age of 47. I'm working on a piece for next week, but I wanted to share this video that features the group's entire set from a 1999 concert in Glasgow. Enjoy. R.I.P. MCA.

Adam Yauch (1964-2012) with his beautiful daughter. Heartbreaking. In the wake of Levon Helm 's death, not to mention the suicide of Junior Seau , who was 6 months my senior and a fellow southern California boy, Adam Yauch 's sudden death at 47 hit me way harder than I could've possibly imagined. MCA was always the coolest Beastie ("cool as a cucumber in a bowl of hot sauce"), but the legacy of the Boys will be [...]
Filed under: News Bryan Bedder, Getty Images As fans, admirers and artists of all stripes continue to pay tribute to Beastie Boys rapper Adam "MCA" Yauch , who died yesterday (May 4) after a three-year battle with cancer, the most heartfelt words may have come from his mother, Frances Yauch. "He was a very courageous person," she told the New York Times , revealing that her son died at 9AM [...]
As someone who grew up with the Beastie Boys constantly playing on MTV, the group was one of few who left an indelible mark on my listening habits over the years. Growing up in Kentucky where the genre of choice was largely country music, the Beastie Boys essentially served as my transition in to real hip-hop. Ad Rock was the wild, party guy and Mike D always seemed like the more intelligent, laid-back member of the group, but MCA was just cool. He was always so confident in himself, giving off this energy that he was who he was and [...]

Entitled "Dot Connectors", this message was posted to Radiohead.com today: I was very sad to hear the news of Adam Yauch's death yesterday. We looked up to the Beastie Boys a lot when we were starting out and how they maintained artistic control making wicked records but still were on a major label, and the Tibetan Freedom Concerts they organized had a very big influence on me personally and the way Adam conducted himself and dealt with it all impressed me a lot. He was a mellow and v smart guy. May he rest in peace. [...]

When does your mom throwing away your best porno mag take on an epic level of melancholy and despair? When it's covered by Coldplay , of course! While many pop stars took to Twitter to mourn the loss of the Beastie Boys ' Adam "MCA" Yauch, Coldplay delivered a more musical tribute with a cover of "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)," which works about as well as it could when accompanied by mournful piano, which makes it sound more like you gotta fight for your [...]

when i was 12, which was in 1986, my mother surprisingly let me purchase the beastie boys' licensed to ill . it might even been with my own money?!? who knows? but to say that record was a musical awakening would be a huge understatement. sure, i was 12 and didnt get all the references, or really couldnt relate to much of what they were talking about, but musically it changed my course of direction. over the course the three years tween licensed and pauls boutique i believe i re-bought the tape, but eventually got on that glowing disc. The Beastie Boys formed all the way back in 1979 and for many, their music was an integral part in forming the earliest of hip-hop memories. I distinctly remember borrowing Hello Nasty from a friend during the summer after third grade. I didn't even try asking my parents to get it. I knew what the answer would be. And even before that, "Paul Revere" was the first track I knew all the words to. Coldplay did this cover for the first time when Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer. They did it again last night at [...]

They always say that the good ones die young. Emotions make us human and I always kind of giggled when I would see people expressing any type of emotion when a musician/celebrity would pass; very much in the same way the world collectively gasped upon the news of the passing of Princess Di. I'm not getting any younger and I'm constantly reminded of that when the news of the music world as you knew it starts to fade before your eyes. The first time I felt a sense of loss was the death of [...]
It might not be as great as The Boss' cover of "The Weight" , but it's a nice tribute to MCA on the day he died by Coldplay. /Fuck Cancer. [via reddit ]
