Some of the biggest names in rock, dance and pop will descend on Chicago for Lollapalooza on August 3-5, including everyone from Frank Ocean to Florence + the Machine to Fun . But Lolla wasn't always this inclusive: It began as a the leading authority on alt-rock in the early '90s, a traveling caravan of flannel and ripped jeans that brought Seattle's grunge and Cali's trash-glam to the masses. That iteration of the touring fest folded after '97, but Lolla [...]

Finals Week Has brought out a ridiculous amount of new music that I haven’t been able to completely cover, so don’t worry but there’s a lot more where this is coming from. I’d share it earlier but unless someone out there wants to take my macroeconomics final (open offer) then I think we’re all screwed. Coldplay - Fight For Your Right To Party (Beastie Boys Cover) Meek Mill feat. Drake & Jeremih - AMEN Game feat. [...]

Beastie Boys was always a tricky act for me to follow. On one hand, Licensed to Ill (1986) defined my later high-school experience. It was a massive, band-breaking album, but for Beastie Boys, not quite definitive. Musically, it's primitive, a time-capsule effort that's representative of its era but hardly representative of Beastie Boys. It barely hinted at the sophisticated direction the trio would take with its follow-up, Paul's Boutique (1989), which, more than anything, set the dominant tone of the Brooklynites' discography. Beastie Boys was the first white rap act to go platinum, [...]

When does your mom throwing away your best porno mag take on an epic level of melancholy and despair? When it's covered by Coldplay , of course! The Beastie Boys formed all the way back in 1979 and for many, their music was an integral part in forming the earliest of hip-hop memories. I distinctly remember borrowing Hello Nasty from a friend during the summer after third grade. I didn't even try asking my parents to get it. I knew what the answer would be. And even before that, "Paul Revere" was the first track I knew all the words to. Coldplay did this cover for the first time when Adam Yauch was diagnosed with cancer. They did it again last night at [...]
