Friday Five : \'frī-(,)dā,-dē 'fīv\ : On the sixth day of every week, I hit the shuffle button on my iTunes, then share the first five tracks and thought for each track. Sometimes there is a playlist involved, occasionally we'll have a guest, but most of the time it's just me. The rest is up to you, our friends and readers! Fire up your media player of choice and share the first five random track of your shuffle in the comments. The Five: " N.T., Parts 1 & 2 " by [...]
This week saw the release of Bat Chain Puller , the "lost" Captain Beefheart album. Although its songs have been available on various bootlegs, the album — recorded with Frank Zappa in 1976 — has never officially been released until now. In the intervening years, it's become something of a legend — not quite on the level of Smile or the lost David Bowie album, but still, a sought-after relic of a bygone era. And while it's finally getting an official release, there are still other similarly shelved records we'd love to hear but probably never will [...]

2011 started a new decade with a bang. The year saw tragedies strike major populations, dictators overthrown, "occupy" redefined, and the casually pepper spray everything cop . As far as music goes, a lot happened too - pop became even more influenced by electronic, helping Adele sound that much better than her Top 40 contemporaries. Dubstep found itself at a heavy fork in the road, one side running all the obnoxious frat parties and the other (perhaps humorously) aiming straight for your heart. Hip-hop became overrun by Tumblr and Twitter personalities pushing "SWAG" into the vocabulary. Indie rock still [...]
As someone with the relatively hipster tendency to only listen to albums as complete wholes, I must say that many hip hop releases stretch the limits of my patience. I don’t know what it is about the genre that makes the artists believe that their fans want nothing more than to hear an album full of painfully unfunny skits, garbage attempts at crossover singles, redundant posse tracks, and a slew of ‘”bonus” songs that weren’t good enough to be integrated into the sequence of the actual album so they become tacked on haphazardly at the end. There are too many [...]
Filed under: News , Video Phil Andelman Fresh off their video for the Santigold -assisted ' Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win ,' hip-hop trio the Beastie Boys are featured in a new clip, only this time instead of using action figures to represent them, their vocals have taken on a furry form. Wonderful Creative has crafted a mashup of the group's 1994 hit 'Sure Shot,' released off [...]

Tweet I'm not going to get into Nas' recent past. The pointless collaboration record with Damian Marley. The likelihood whatever money he makes from here on out, that money goes right to Kelis. The momentum he lost in recent years despite releasing two of his finest records in Hip Hop Is Dead and the ahem... untitled record. I'm willing to toss that all aside and focus on the here and now. His spot on Too Many Rappers by the Beastie Boys on [...]

What's up everyone? I wanted to write up something real quick today to share some new tunes as well as a very cool new video that I came across over the weekend. First of all, I was psyched to see that the new SebastiAn album Total leaked in full, so now I can finally stop listening to shitty radio rips of "Embody" over and over again. Next there was the Beastie Boys much anticipated new LP Hot Sauce Committee Pt. II, which had some great cuts that took me back to the glory days of hip [...]

MCA, Mike D and Ad-Rock are three names that have been in my vocabulary for almost as long as I can remember, and rightfully so. The Beastie Boys have been a staple in Hip Hop for many years reaching fans from all genres with their witty rhymes, unparalleled production and sometimes, as of more recent, politically charged raps. For Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2 , their eighth studio release, we find the Beastie Boys coming back to their roots with more party driving cuts than their past couple studio releases. It’s difficult to gauge on any scale what makes an album a “best” album. What exactly makes something qualify to be the best? It’s hard to say, especially when it comes to New York hip hop, a rare breed of music whose sound has changed and revolutionized the genre since its conception. Something about the streets of the Big Apple and hip hop seems to infiltrate human’s cerebellums and produce euphoric feelings of pleasure. Oh baby, we like it raw. But what are the best albums to come out of the New York scene? Like I said, these [...]
Beastie Boys' latest Hot Sauce Committee Part Two is an auditory feast for the earholes.
It's a fact: Since the mid-'80s, Michael Diamond (Mike D), Adam Yauch (MCA), and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) - you know, the Beastie Boys - have played an integral-yet-intricate role in New York's hip-hop scene. Originally a burgeoning act in underground punk circles, the loud-mouthed, Jewish-born rappers eventually became renowned for their expert use of sampling techniques (19892s Paul's Boutique ), landmark party records (19862s License to Ill , 19922s Check Your Head ), and unwavering hometown appreciation (20042s To the 5 Boroughs ). Over three decades later, the Beastie Boys remain ever vigilant. Case in [...]
Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 is about as close to a full-blown throwback as we might ever hear from the Beastie Boys. Still, it's not likely to please everyone.

I don't have to say a COT damn thang!

The Beastie Boys forthcoming disc, “Hot Sauce Committee Pt. 2.” has spewed all around the interwebs today. The new disc includes spots from Nas and Santigold , and a release date of May 3rd which you can Pre-Order HERE ( Amazon ). Listen, Love, & Buy when it comes out!!! Tracklist: 01 – Make Some Noise 02 – Nonstop Disco Powerpack 03 – OK [...]
Amazon.com The Beastie Boys will make some noise come May 3 when their delayed eighth studio album, 'Hot Sauce Committee, Pt. 2,' is finally released. But the boom-bap has come a little early for New York's bad brothers. On Wednesday (April 5), 'Make Some Noise' -- track one off the album -- was leaked online, and the Beastie Boys had to concede to the Internet, releasing the track via their Tumblr page later that same day. "This wasn't really part of the plan," Mike D [...]
The concept of artists performing a classic album from start to finish, popularized by All Tomorrow's Parties' Don't Look Back events, has spread like wildfire over the last few years. There have been some genuine highlights - Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation , The Stooges doing Funhouse before Ron Asheton died, Spiritualized doing Ladies and Gentlemen... –- but it’s largely been a rock-centric business, with hip-hop artists far outnumbered by dudes with guitars. Now, some rappers are adopting the idea the idea themselves: Snoop Dogg recently announced that he’ll be doing Doggystyle again [...]
