Last Friday, a few of us spent the end of our Friday afternoons attempting to watch choppy illegal streams of the BBC's Olympics coverage - exactly the sort of thing NBC was trying to prevent us from seeing. Those of us who succeeded in tuning in saw some perfectly ridiculous things during the Ceremony, which filmmaker Danny Boyle directed, my favorite being the cartoon punks on pogo shoes who bounced around during "Pretty Vacant" and "Firestarter." But the actual ceremony included a full-scale tribute to the entire history of British pop music, featuring performances from Paul McCartney, Dizzee Rascal, Frank [...]

Stereogum Last Friday, a few of us spent the end of our Friday afternoons attempting to watch choppy illegal streams of the BBC's Olympics coverage - exactly the sort of thing NBC was trying to prevent us from seeing. When a group takes the risk of combining sound and vocal styling that initially seem to be polar opposites, it often threatens to make the compilation a “tale of two albums”-the best of songs and the worst of songs. However, on rare occasions, the risk pays off when the yin-yang concept gives the album added depth and diversity thematically and the unique and, at times, competing sounds complement each other in a way that elevates the album to new heights like Fleetwood Mac did with Rumors and Buried Beds does with their second studio album Tremble the [...]
You guys love lists, and we love to start our holiday weekend early, so thanks VH1 for putting together this 100 Greatest Artists Of All Time countdown. (Spoiler Alert: No Wavves...) You should compare it to VH1's 100 Greatest Artists Of Rock & Roll from 1998 (back when VH1 was VH-1) to see some of the overlaps/differences. For starters: The Top 5 "Rock" vs "Of All Time" is the same group, except for Jimi Hendrix who's been pushed to No. 6. It'll also give you an idea of how VH1 defines rock & roll. And how much it [...]
Apple's big announcement today has been revealed as expected after the company posted a cryptic announcement ("Tomorrow is just another day that you’ll never forget. Check back here tomorrow for an exciting announcement from iTunes") on their site yesterday. Prices start at €12.99 per album and a box set containing all of the studio albums, mini-documentaries and the Past Masters collection will set you back €149. It means that the long negotiations between Apple and Apple Corps. (who licence The Beatles music) has finally reached an agreement on legal disputes [...]
Paul McCartney likes to get back: Mark Ronson- esque remixes of Beatles songs keep his audience content in anticipation of the main attraction and a homage of Beatles memorabilia adorns stage screens. That McCartney is dressed in a Sullivan suit as he strides on stage with a simple, stripped-down band, is no coincidence. There are even lava lamps atop the keyboard player’s stack. Homage and nostalgia informs the show throughout: ‘Let Me Roll It’ ends with a coda of Jimi Hendrix’s ‘Foxy Lady’ and before beginning ‘The Long and Winding Road’, McCartney recounts the time that he [...]
While he has spent time in New York and Los Angeles, to record the self-titled debut from The Greatcoats [ MySpace ], David Tenczar , songwriter and frontman, returned to his Austin roots to finish the record. The album will be released on March 9th and he'll be banding together with his usual cadre of musicians for promotional dates and, hopefully, a tour. To quote the band, you'll definitely "the music of The Greatcoats is, at heart, music that reminds you of better times." It's retro-rock (think The Beatles, Supergrass or [...]
Everyone seems to talk to about Thanksgiving as if it is their favorite holiday. It makes sense: when it all boils down, no one loves gluttony more than an American. We can justify spending money on food (over presents), knowing that we will partake in shoveling these tasty purchases through our personal pie holes. More mashed potatoes, please! I'm cool with it. Especially when I know that the feed fest I'm attending is forty-five people deep. Forty-five people means a lot of conversations ("Have you put on weight?" "When are [...]
If you've been around a bit, you'll know that Noah and the Whale are one of Radio Exile's fave acts [ Evidence ]. Once we heard news of their new album, The First Days Of Spring , out August 31 via Mercury, we figured that we should share what we have with those we find dearest to our hearts, our readers (or just Holly , we aren't picky). One of the tracks from said album is "Blue Skies", a dreamy soundscape that while not particularly fitting for our [...]

The British Invasion was a period between 1964 (arguably kick started by The Beatles ' Ed Sullivan appearance) and 1967 when our buddies across the pond responded to American blues, rock and roll and soul music. Although not about a specific genre, it came to describe the music made by a host of English musicians incorporating many styles during that time; many of which during this era would not only go on to be household names, but legends of rock roll: The Kinks, The Who, The Animals, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones [...]
