Set FMLY Fest on Random from Mick LeGrande on Vimeo . Over the past 8 months a beautiful man named Mick LeGrande has been documenting FMLY in Los Angeles with the intention of producing a full length called We Are FMLY . We have talked for a while about the importance of seeing what FMLY looks like across the world since it just wouldn't feel right unless you were in this too. So Mick has thought of a solution. We are going to open source the doc. If [...]

Midnight Ridazz founder Roadblock has started writing very informative and somewhat cheeky articles for KCET's online blog. He recently posted this one to help cyclist and motorist understand how eachother work and can co-exist more safely. Los Angeles is a bike town in waiting. All the elements are there: year-round fair weather, relative flatness, big wide streets, insane traffic delays, the need for exercise in a city that lacks public parks and spaces. Studies show that 50% of trips made by car are less than a very bike-able 3 miles in [...]
I Am Genko - It's All Yours (Yohuna cover) One year ago, Lima Peru's sweetheart and beatsoulmachine i am genko was working on his first LP when he was robbed blind. Everything was stolen. Now he is trying to recover all of his gear so he can give us an amazing new LP but he needs our help! We all know times are tough but even $5 will help him get back on his feet. He may or may not be making the trip out to FMLY FEST Brooklyn this Summer but that [...]

While browsing through TED the other day, I came across a video about this website . The online community has opensourced vertical gardening and has communally compiled a continuously improved guide on how to garden vertically. All you need is window space! I am trying to build out this model in some outdoor space I have and will be posting up pictures as they make sense. Maybe I'll meet you there!

W-H-I-T-E - Fountain With FMLY FEST just around the corner, I thought we could all get a little more familiar with who we will be jamming out with this December. Corey Hansen, a LA transplant in New York, plays under the moniker W-H-I-T-E . Haunting and swirling drenched with heavy cathedral organs and perfectly layered vocals, chugging beats will keep you dancing while the rest keeps you floating. It's albums like "Twin Tigers" completely blow me away with what one person can do. Check out the interview with him on Sean Carnage 's [...]

Bigg Jus - This Is Poor People's Day This post is a response to something that a friend of mine shared on Facebook. He posted an anti-Occupy picture that I found offensive. If you'd like to look at the picture, it's here (I linked instead of embedding because it's mean-spirited and makes me a bit queasy). Basically, the picture is of a teenager who has never worked a day in her life holding a sign accusing the protesters of being lazy and calling them spoiled. It made me angry, so I made my second donation [...]

In 2008, many banks in the US and around the world were on the edge of collapse when federal governments stepped in to save them. These banks were participating in unregulated lending, irresponsible loans, and unchecked practices. They were given massive bailouts without any insurance that they would change their practices and low and behold, they haven't. Now Bank of America, along with other major banks, are starting to charge more fees to their users because of their mismanaged practices and new regulations. If you are sick of big banks rolling over on the customer for their lack of responsible [...]

gil scott heron - the revolution will not be televised For too long the economic and political system which we are all a part of has favored the rich and powerful. This country has been going in the same direction since we became a super power after the second world war. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer and we all get fatter. Big business has been in bed with the government for such long time that the consequences are getting out of hand. It doesn't take much to see [...]

For years this country has been carrying on a pattern of the rich getting richer and the poor getting poorer, squeezing the middle class out completely. Now we are brought to a time when our whole economy - and the economy of most of the word - is put into question as we reach the edge of a total collapse. Young people are afraid to become educated because of the looming, seemingly endless debt that it would put them in and as a result, we are becoming less and less educated on the whole. With the amount of debt [...]

The third annual FMLY FEST in LA is coming up again on December 29th and 30th. This time we are going more inclusive, more participation and more of what you want. There is FMLY coming from all over the country (and maybe even some from outside of the US!). We want to bring together everyone who is doing positive work in LA to one place, so if you want to be involved, please email fmlyfest@thefmly.com . This festival is for EVERYONE, but it's not possible without your support. We are fundraising for the fest [...]

The war isn't just overseas... The Interrupters is a movie that follows the violence of gangs for one year in Chicago and explores the question, how can we co-exist without violence. It's won all sorts of festivals and it doesn't surprise me at all since Shannon and I were both in tears before the end of the trailer. I can't wait to see this movie.

All over the world, people are reclaiming their right to good natural, gmo-free food. You can do it too. It doesn't matter how much space you have. Nothing is more rewarding than being free of that system.

This is a little story about a family in Pasadena who started an urban homestead and grow most of their own food on a 10th of an acre. Despite the extremely staged acting, this video is really inspiring about what you can do with the space you have. My head almost exploded when They showed their handcranked food processor (I'm not the only one, right?!). I love growing my own food but these guys took it to the next level. If anyone else is as inspired as I am, email me and let's make this happen when you [...]

Winters in Wisconsin are good for one thing - hibernation. Last winter me (VD) and my best friends Kaleb and Shelly huddled up together and made this short film. They asked me to create a series of soundscapes for them to animate to. This one is Isolation. Shelly and Kaleb burrowed into their room night after night for a total of 200 hours to create this incredible film. Let it load HD/fullscreen/headphones. Take a minute out of yr busy day and get lost in isolation. [...]

Our friends the Good Makers recently left for Kenya. Yesterday they sent this report over. Everything here in Nairobi, Kenya, is brilliantly alive, the air is thick, the soil is rich, the flowers are stunning, and the people are exquisite. The Kibera slum, the largest slum in Africa, is built partly on hills, with a sewer system running down its core, in which the children seem to step in, trip over, and splash constantly. The ground is made from piles of trash and feces, with goats, chickens, and dogs roaming freely. Within [...]

I recently returned to my family home in Northern California. During my stay, I was blown away by how much work my little sister, Addie, has put into her ukulele music. We decided to make a little record before I returned to LA. The result, PORCH , is swag. This is the "realest" music out there. It's one musician playing one instrument, recorded with a single microphone. Download ADDIE STONE - PORCH, for free, HERE .

A recent and massive theft has put the Silent Barn in a position to temporarily close operations, and we are viewing this as an opportunity to begin our transition into a viably permanent, resilient, and safe part of New York City is how the humble buds at the Silent Barn have phrased to our global community that they have just had $15k worth of audio equipment stolen from them... on top of an unfair amount of personal belongings and destruction to the art space. The Silent Barn has been host to several FMLY shows, living quarters for our pals, [...]

The fourth world war is the most devastating world war to date but is rarely talked about in America but we are all a part of in one way or another. The war of corporate globalization is one that affects almost everyone in the world. This documentary does an amazing job covering the war for many different places around the world. There is no doubt that we are more connected globally than we ever have been. The question now is who will end up benefiting in the long run from this. Will it be corporate colonialism or the will of [...]
