1. I wonder if it spooks Christopher Plummer, 81, just a little bit to play dying ( The Last Station ) or dead ( Beginners ) men in such close succession. At least in Beginners (in which his character appears in flashbacks), he gets to live out his final days with gusto, coming out of the closet at 75 and snagging a hot much-younger boyfriend (Goran Visnjic). Tough work, and maybe he'll finally get an Oscar for his effort. 2. I'm so glad I came out at 22 and didn't wait until I was in [...]

Ethan Hawke, Julie Delpy, and Richard Linklater are discussing a follow-up to Before Sunset , the delightful 2004 film that was itself a follow-up to 1995's Before Sunrise . As Hawke kindly points out, if they make the third movie next summer, it will be nine years since they worked on the last one - just as there were nine years between the first two films. If the trio does make a third movie as excellent as the first two, it would probably make the Before Trilogy a top-five trilogy in [...]

Before Sunset and Before Sunrise make for a nice double feature, the story of wayward lovers, American Jessie, and Frenchwomen Celine. In Sunset, the two meet on a train and spend the night together tramping through Prague. In Sunrise, Jessie has written a book ten years later about the experience hoping to connect with his lost love. Sunrise, for me is a work of emotional genius, but it can't fully be appreciated without watching Sunset first. Now word comes that there might be a third movie in the series, presumably picking up 10 years after [...]

In addition to my usual year end lists , I'm also doing decade lists . Following are my favorite films that were released between 2000-2009... Muruch's Best of the Decade: Films 20. Mama Mia I didn't expect to include this musical on the list until my husband reminded me how much we enjoyed it. When it comes to favorite movies that I watch again and again, I tend to lean [...]

Loving Takes This Course: A Tribute To The Songs Of Kath Bloom is a beautiful two-disc set featuring new covers of Kath Bloom songs by Devendra Banhart, Scout Niblett, Josephine Foster, Corrina Repp, and The Concretes among others. The second disc in the set contains the original recordings by Kath Bloom, an excellent bonus feature that I wish other tributes would include. This review has unfortunately been gathering dust in my draft folder since April, forgotten until I began writing about the new Judee Sill tribute [...]
